Celiac Disease as an Underlying Cause of Multisystemic Symptoms: Consequences of Delayed Diagnosis - A Literature Review

    Get PDF
Introduction and purpose Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder that develops in genetically predisposed individuals in response to gluten intake. The overall prevalence of CD is approximately 0.75% in the general population, making it a condition frequently encountered in everyday clinical practice. CD impacts multiple organ systems. This paper describes its influence on, among others, the skin and mucous membranes, hematological parameters, bone health, reproductive function, and neuropsychiatric status. This review aims to summarize current evidence on the extraintestinal manifestations of this condition and highlight the importance of early recognition of these diverse symptoms. A brief description of the state of knowledge A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed and MDPI databases. The analysis included original articles, reviews, and meta-analyses related to extraintestinal symptoms of CD, with emphasis on publications from the last ten years. The findings suggest that such symptoms are common and frequently non-specific, which frequently contributes to diagnostic delays. Many of them may occur before gastrointestinal symptoms or appear as isolated signs, leading to underdiagnosis and untreated disease. Summary Many extraintestinal symptoms of CD are still overlooked by clinicians. Improving healthcare professionals’ awareness of these symptoms may lead to earlier diagnosis and earlier initiation of a gluten-free diet. Timely treatment can help avoid long-term complications and significantly improve patients’ prognosis and quality of life

Introduction: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent inflammatory disorder affecting millions of women worldwide, often causing debilitating pelvic pain, infertility, and significant reductions in quality of life. Although hormonal and surgical treatments remain the standard of care, many patients experience persistent symptoms or intolerable side effects, underscoring the need for complementary and alternative approaches. Aim of the Study: This review aims to synthesize current evidence on alternative treatments for endometriosis, with a particular focus on the potential roles of physical activity and physiotherapy, while highlighting critical gaps in the existing research. Materials and Methods The review covers publications published in 2003-2025. The search for publications in the Pubmed electronic database was carried out using the following keywords: endometriosis, inflammation, physical activity, pelvic floor muscles, inflammaging, physiotherapy, pathogenesis, cytokines. Conclusions : Preliminary studies suggest that regular physical activity and targeted physiotherapy interventions may alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and improve psychological well-being in women with endometriosis. However, current evidence is limited by small sample sizes, inconsistent methodologies, and short follow-up periods. There is an urgent need for well-designed, large-scale research focusing specifically on women with endometriosis to evaluate alternative treatment strategies. Future studies should systematically assess the types, intensities, and durations of physical activity that are most effective, and rigorously investigate the benefits and risks of hormonal therapies. Without robust data, clinicians cannot offer clear, evidence-based recommendations, making further research essential to improve outcomes and quality of life for women affected by this complex condition

The Gut–Skin Axis: The Role of Intestinal Microbiota in Acne, Psoriasis and Atopic Dermatitis: A Narrative Review

    Get PDF
Background. The gut–skin axis links intestinal dysbiosis with chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Acne vulgaris, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis have been associated with altered gut microbial diversity, metabolite production, barrier function and immune regulation. Objective. To summarize current evidence on the role of intestinal microbiota in the pathogenesis and potential management of acne vulgaris, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, with emphasis on gut–skin mechanisms and microbiota-targeted interventions. Methods. A narrative review of PubMed and PubMed Central (2015–2025) was performed using terms related to the gut–skin axis, intestinal microbiota, acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, dysbiosis and probiotics. Human and translational studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and high-quality narrative reviews on gut microbiota in these conditions were included; 20 publications were synthesized qualitatively. Results. Across the included studies, gut dysbiosis in all three diseases was characterized by reduced microbial diversity, loss of short-chain fatty acid-producing commensals and enrichment of pro-inflammatory taxa. In acne, these changes correlated with systemic inflammation and sebaceous activity; in psoriasis, with Th17-driven inflammation and associated comorbidities; in atopic dermatitis, with early-life immune dysregulation and barrier dysfunction. Several clinical trials reported modest, strain-dependent improvements in disease severity with Lactobacillus- and Bifidobacterium-based probiotics. Conclusions. Available data support a mechanistic link between intestinal microbiota and inflammatory skin diseases. Gut dysbiosis appears to contribute to immune polarization and barrier impairment, while microbiota-modulating strategies show promise as adjunctive therapies. Further well-designed trials are needed to clarify causality and to define effective, standardized microbiota-based interventions

Osteopenia as a target for early therapeutic intervention in the prevention of osteoporosis

    Get PDF
Background. Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease in the world, occurring primarily in postmenopausal women and older men. The disease is usually diagnosed only after a fracture has occurred, and in a significant proportion of patients, bone mineral density (BMD) values indicate only osteopenia.Aim. The article aims to draw attention to the need for early diagnosis and appropriate intervention in people with osteopenia, to determine the appropriate moment to start treatment, and to present recommendations for prevention and treatment in different phases of the disease.Material and Methods. A literature review has been conducted using databases such as PubMed, FRAX calculator. Particular attention was paid to the most recent years of publication.Conclusions. Early diagnosis and prevention of bone mineral density disorders, as well as the implementation of appropriate treatment in the early stages of the disease can limit the development of osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures. According to current guidelines, pharmacological treatment of patients with osteopenia should only be considered in the presence of additional fracture risk factors. Effective implementation of therapy requires accurate diagnosis and proper classification of the patient into the appropriate fracture risk group

Infertility as a Contemporary Social and Therapeutic Challenge - A Literature Review

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Infertility is a multifactorial condition affecting both women and men, with substantial social, psychological, and medical implications. It arises from hormonal, anatomical, genetic, infectious, and lifestyle-related factors. AIM OF STUDY: This review aims to summarize current knowledge on the etiology, pathophysiology, and therapeutic approaches to infertility in both sexes, emphasizing major conditions.  MATERIAL AND METHODS: A literature review was conducted analyzing peer-reviewed studies on reproductive health from PubMed and GoogleScholar. Both male and female infertility were considered, focusing on factors influencing gametogenesis, fertilization, embryo implantation and pregnancy outcomes. BASIC RESULTS: In women, infertility is influenced by endometriosis, which alters implantation through inflammatory and immunomodulatory mechanisms; PCOS, which disrupts hormonal balance and ovulation; and uterine fibroids, which impair myometrial contractility and endometrial receptivity. In men, infertility results from genetic and acquired causes, including azoospermia, varicocele, infections, and malignancies, with oxidative stress, antisperm antibodies, and dysbiosis contributing to impaired spermatogenesis and sperm transport. Lifestyle interventions, as well as surgical and pharmacological treatments, can improve reproductive outcomes. CONCLUSION: Infertility is a complex, interrelated condition requiring multidisciplinary management. Understanding biological, genetic, immunological and lifestyle factors is essential to optimize therapy, enhance conception, and increase live birth rates. Targeting modifiable factors such as diet, physical activity, and body weight is a promising adjunct to conventional treatment

The article examines the importance of humility in religious spirituality drawing on the teachings of Archbishop Zygmunt Szczęsny Felinski. He sees humility as the bedrock of spiritual life and a key virtue that allows for the growth of perfection in religious practice. The article discusses the main aspects of humility, such as: i) theessence of humility: humility is the understanding of oneself as a created, sinful being whose goodness is owed to God’s grace. Humility forms the foundation of other virtues and is not merely the result of human effort but a gift from God. It is a virtue that encourages complete surrender to God; ii) acquiring humility: according to the teachings of the Archbishop, humility should be practised in everyday life through patience, diligence, and simplicity. He also emphasizes the need to acknowledge one’s sinfulness and inability to achieve good without God’s help. Humility develops through the practice the ability to endure humiliations; iii) the practice of humility: it manifests in various dimensions: towards God, others, and oneself. Szczesny Felinski emphasizes that in religious life, humility towards God is expressed in prayer, accepting God’s will, and participating in the sacraments. Humility towards others involves forgiveness, asking for forgiveness, and serving others without self-exaltation. The humility towards oneself is the recognition of one’s sinfulness and limitations; iv) external humility: Felinski recommends that humility should also be visible in external life, such as in the simplicity of living, clothing, behaviour, and attitude towards authority. Humility is considered a virtue that rules over all the faculties of a person: the mind, heart, and will. It helps a person fulfil God’s will, to overcome pride and to draw closer to God.Artykuł omawia znaczenie pokory w duchowości zakonnej na podstawie nauk abp. Względem siebie natomiast pokora to uznanie swojej grzeszności i ograniczeń. Pomaga człowiekowi w pełnieniu woli Bożej, w pokonywaniu pychy i w zbliżeniu do Boga

CHRZEŚCIJAŃSTWO W INDIACH: ANALIZA HISTORYCZNA I TEOLOGICZNA JEGO ROZWOJU I WPŁYWU

Christianity, as one of the world’s major religions, has played a crucial role in shaping India’s religious and cultural landscape. At the heart of Christian faith is the person of Jesus Christ, true God and true man, whose incarnation is intrinsically linked to His Paschal Mystery: His suffering, death, and resurrection for the salvationof humanity (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 461). The Church, as the Bride of the Lamb (Revelation 21:9), continues Christ’s mission, bringing His message of redemption to the world. The presence of Christianity in India dates back to the 1st century AD and is traditionally attributed to St. Thomas the Apostle, who is regarded as a leading founder of Indian Christianity. His missionary journey to the Malabar Coast led to the establishment of the earliest Christian communities, which maintained a unique identity within the broader religious and cultural fabric of India. Over the centuries, Christianity in India has evolved through encounters with local traditions, colonial influences, and indigenous adaptations. The faith has faced challenges but has also contributed significantly to education, social reforms, and interreligious dialogue. This article examines the historical development of Christianity in India, theological perspectives, and its socio-cultural impact. Using historical and theological analysis, it explores the evolution of Christianity in India from its apostolic origins to contemporary times, considering its interactions with Indian society, culture, and politics. Furthermore, this study highlights the role of the Church in inculturation and mission, ensuring that the Gospel continues to be a transformative force in Indian society.

MIEJSCE MISTYKI W CYWILIZACJI XXI WIEKU

We are witnessing a remarkable phenomenon concerning the man and his or her life in the world: as the civilisation advances, we are faced with an increasing axiological and anthropological confusion. It undoubtedly goes to the late Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s credit as he spoke about the dictatorship of relativism. As a consequence, another phenomenon, described by the late Pope St John Paul II as the ‚civilisation of death’, occurs. At its core there is a rejection of the Person of God. Mysticism tends to be associated with some Oriental practices that are alien to the spirit of the Gospel. Just as often, the contemporary man uses this term to describe things, phenomena, experiences that are extraordinary, unexplainable or overwhelming him or her. As seen, the notion lost its deep religious and spiritual meaning. Mysticism in its nature is an attempt to grasp and to define the state of one’s union with God. We can say that the human being, the effect of the Divine creative will, is gifted and equipped to strive for the communion with God. An analysis of the state of the civilisation in the 21st century leads us to confirm the K. Rahner’s proposition that „the Christian of the 21st century will either be a mystic or they will not exist at all”.Obserwujemy niezwykłe zjawisko dotyczące człowieka i jego życia w świecie. W miarę postępu cywilizacyjnego mamy do czynienia z coraz większym zagubieniem aksjologicznym i antropologicznym.
