Geology versus Genesis – Creation Myths around 1800 When geology as a genuine science was established in the period around 1800, its development was not without conflict, as its findings and hypotheses about the formation of the earth and about the immensely long periods of the earth’s history were in blatant contradiction to the Christian religious account. The transformations within the history of ideas and discourse were not linear, however, but were marked by numerous, sometimes reciprocal connections and references, selective harmonizations and even by the simple exclusion of problematic and conflictual topics. The biblical account of the creation of the earth within six days continued to be fought over well into the 19th century; and the new science, which only began to call itself »geology« at this time, partly adopted this scheme, for example by interpreting the six or seven days from the Book of Genesis as symbolic of geological epochs
