No full textDe zorgstandaard ‘Zingeving in de psychische hulpverlening’ werd in mei 2023 uitgebracht door Akwa ggz, het kwaliteitsinstituut voor het borgen en verbeteren van werkmethoden in Nederlandse geestelijke gezondheidszorg. Een interdisciplinaire werkgroep van vakverenigingen heeft samen met het patiënten- en naastbetrokkenenplatform Mind bijgedragen aan de totstandkoming van dit nieuwe kwaliteitsdocument. Ook de expertise en kunde van de geestelijk verzorger in de ggz komt daarin aan de orde. Dat er nu een interdisciplinair kwaliteitsdocument beschikbaar is, stemt tot optimisme en creëert nieuwsgierigheid. Tijdens een studiedag met de feestelijke werktitel ‘Flower Power in de ggz?’ bespraken onderzoekers en praktijkbeoefenaars die bij de zorgstandaard betrokken waren welke onderzoeksvragen er gaandeweg zijn ontstaan en aandacht behoeven. Deze bundel bevat de uitgewerkte bijdrages aan de studiedag. Ook komt de geschiedenis van de zorgstandaard Zingeving in de psychische hulpverlening aan de orde
Extent and Intensity of Suicidal Ideation and Planning in Patients Presenting With Psychiatric Emergencies
No full textBackgroundIn emergency psychiatry high levels of suicidality are encountered. However, empirical studies about the extent of suicidal ideation remain scarce, and data are often gathered retrospectively via medical records. The present observational study aims to assess suicidal ideation, planning, and actions experienced by patients presenting with psychiatric emergencies.MethodsIn a consecutive sample of 136 patients, a standard psychiatric examination including the Chronological Assessment of Suicide Events (CASE Approach) was completed. An evaluative monitoring form for the CASE Approach was designed to record and quantify the garnered information.ResultsAlmost 60% of the patients reported suicidal ideation with some planning. Approximately 25% had experienced over 10 hours of suicidal ideation on their worst days in the past 2 months; 27% had procured their method of choice, and another 27% had practiced a small, moderate, or serious suicide attempt.ConclusionFindings suggest more intense suicidality in emergency psychiatry than has been reported in previous empirical studies

Shaping hopeful resistance in trust-eroding societies
No full textIn the Netherlands, once predicated as a high trust society, citizens’ trust in institutions and decision-makers has declined significantly. The massive childcare benefits scandal deserves special mention as it exhibits a structural type of distrustful policy and state sponsored violence against its marginalized citizens that has to this day not yet been properly dealt with. It targeted mainly non-Dutch origin households of lower socioeconomic status, a demographic well known to youth work. Internationally, multiple analyses have juxtaposed (adult) democratic values of trust, peace and social freedoms with (youthful) street cultures characterized by negative peer-pressure, poor social development and violence. However, prominent political leaders from the United States to Europe, Turkey and elsewhere have systematically undermined democratic legacy. Demonizing entire people groups at home, supporting brutish wars abroad, and criminalizing major as well as minor forms of dissidence, are but a few examples. In these bleak circumstances, we ask: what emerging forms of hopeful resistance can we detect in societies where trust as a public value has eroded? We investigate youth work settings and programs for possible answers to this question. We employ a micro-interactional and emotion-focused sociology to trace different constructive interaction rituals. These contain cognitively and emotionally restorative effects, providing a counterweight to young people’s debilitating and discouraging experiences. We demonstrate how youth workers and their participants harness these experiences, inviting and challenging (local) politicians and other power-brokers into joint interaction rituals. These micro-dynamics can positively feed into higher-level public social processes geared toward rebuilding trust.<br/
Experiences of grief and maltreatment among orphans in foster homes in Namibia
No full textOrphans in SSA are often cared for in foster homes. Although there is no consistent picture of whether orphans experience more often than non-orphans child maltreatment, they are at risk of facing violence in their home situation. This study aimed to understand how Namibian orphans experience their treatment in foster care and how exposure to maltreatment influences their experiences of grief. An ethnographic design was used in which 46 children, adolescents, their carers and various experts in northern Namibia participated. Focus groups, individual interviews and art-based methods were used. The results show that the majority of the orphans experience a form of maltreatment, including differential treatment between themselves and the biological children in the household. Risk factors for child maltreatment are identified on child, carer and household level. Children and adolescents long for their parents when they are treated badly and feel the parent could have protected and comforted them, which shows the important role of having a secure foster home situation in coping with parental loss. Parenting interventions to positively influence the risk of child maltreatment in foster care are recommended

No full textLoss, Grief and Existential Awareness introduces the Integrated Process Model (IPM), a new interdisciplinary and interprofessional model for grief research, education, and accompaniment that distinguishes and integrates five dimensions of grief: physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual.Central in this book is the insight that grief is connected to love because it is rooted in losing what is meaningful and dear to us. Once we recognize this, grief can become a window to existential awareness. Combining research on the physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual dimensions of grief, the integrated process approach connects this quest for a personal and authentic answer to the big questions in life with the philosophical and therapeutic tradition of existential thinking. Structured in an accessible, informative manner with gradual information building, the book presents the IPM approach at the beginning and then turns to it as a model throughout the book, so the reader gradually will start to deepen their understanding and memorize the framework. The structure is enhanced with boxes with existential reflections and exercises to engage the reader and case presentations of grieving persons who are followed throughout the book.This book is meant for everyone who is interested in a deeper understanding of how loss and grief can help opening the door to a more meaningful way of living. It is especially helpful for healthcare professionals, therapists, counsellors, chaplains, and researchers

No full textThis paper explores the intersection of teacher modelling and student emulation in moral education. First, two interpretations of teacher modelling are discussed: expressing moral virtues unintentionally and intentionally teaching morality. Next, student emulation is examined, differentiating between mimicry, imitation, and emulation. Third, the paper introduces four scenarios of intentional/unintentional and effective/ineffective modelling, highlighting the complex relationship between teachers’ intentions and students’ responses in the moral education process
