Dangerous liaisons:Social AI and the problem with the relational turn to moral status

    No full text
The question what moral status to ascribe to artificially intelligent entities, such as social robots, is at the forefront of academic debate. The related question as to how social AI affects the moral status we can ascribe to ourselves as human beings, by contrast, has received far less attention. Philosophers who discuss this issue propose a relational turn: human moral status should not be understood to be based on uniquely or typically human traits or capacities but derives from interpersonal interactions and practices through which people come to respect and morally value others. The aim of this article is to set out how developments in the field of social AI pose a problem not only to traits-based accounts of (human) moral status, but also to the relational approach. Our ways of morally relating to others are often mistaken and social AI heightens this risk, as it is purposefully designed to evoke moral responses in humans by displaying traits and mirroring forms of interaction that we would ascribe moral relevance in relations with fellow humans or (non-human) animals. If we cannot take the moral appearance of interactions with social AI at face value, we need further normative grounds to distinguish relations in which moral status is properly ascribed from those where it is not

Pedagogies of Well‐Being:Disciplinary and Moral Concerns

    No full text
Worldwide, emphasis on student well-being and interventions like social emotional learning has necessitated investigations around its pedagogies. Taking the example of Happiness Class in India, I show that pedagogies of well-being in this context are deeply intertwined with disciplinary and moral concerns. In conversation with Foucauldian and Herbartian notions of discipline, I highlight some of the dangers of SEL interventions and argue that a Foucauldian critique is necessary but not sufficient for educational settings

Educating chaplains for a changing society:Discourses of worldview in professionalism

    No full text
Chaplaincy’s professionalism is closely connected to worldview. However, in Western contexts, this relationship is changing in response to increasing secularization, pluralization, and professionalization. Still, little is known about how chaplaincy educational programs address these changes and prepare future chaplains to integrate worldview with professionalism. Therefore, this study examines the main discourses regarding the role of worldview for chaplaincy’s professionalism within chaplaincy educational programs in the Netherlands. Through a critical discourse analysis of program documents and interviews with representatives from these programs, we identify five key discourses: worldview care, interfaith care, tradition-specific care, neutral care, and societal engagement. These discourses reflect various, sometimes conflicting, perspectives on the role of worldview in chaplaincy professionalism. While all educational programs share the worldview care discourse, some emphasize interfaith and neutral approaches to accommodate pluralistic and secular contexts, while others maintain a strong connection to specific worldview traditions. The societal engagement discourse highlights an expanding role for chaplaincy in addressing broader societal issues. These coexisting discourses underscore the ongoing negotiation of the role of worldview in chaplaincy professionalism and suggest a need for dialogue both within and between educational programs

Finding Meaning in Psychiatric Recovery:A Literature Review of Approaches to Meaning in Life Within Mental Healthcare

    No full text
Meaning in life (MiL) is a key facilitator of recovery from severe mental illness (SMI), yet its conceptualization in mental health care remains ambiguous. Through an integrative literature review, this study first identified a range of MiL aspects in mental healthcare for people with SMI. Thirty-one studies were selected and analysed, in which 32 aspects emerged. Secondly, an analysis of the theoretical background of the selected studies yielded four disciplinary perspectives from which MiL was conceptualized. Future MiL studies might benefit from specifying and including common (or less common) MiL aspects, such as purpose, relationships, spirituality, identity, coherence, and well-being.</p

Professional guidelines for social work:A study of the current state, practice and further development of guidelines for social work in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
In the Netherlands, there has been considerable debate about the desirability and necessity of professional guidelines for social work. Guidelines can support social workers in making practical decisions by bringing together scientific knowledge, best practices, and ethical standards. At the same time, there is hesitation because guidelines are also associated with control and standardization, which can conflict with the emphasis on customization and context-sensitiveness that characterizes social work
