Dangerous liaisons:Social AI and the problem with the relational turn to moral status
No full textThe question what moral status to ascribe to artificially intelligent entities, such as social robots, is at the forefront of academic debate. The related question as to how social AI affects the moral status we can ascribe to ourselves as human beings, by contrast, has received far less attention. Philosophers who discuss this issue propose a relational turn: human moral status should not be understood to be based on uniquely or typically human traits or capacities but derives from interpersonal interactions and practices through which people come to respect and morally value others. The aim of this article is to set out how developments in the field of social AI pose a problem not only to traits-based accounts of (human) moral status, but also to the relational approach. Our ways of morally relating to others are often mistaken and social AI heightens this risk, as it is purposefully designed to evoke moral responses in humans by displaying traits and mirroring forms of interaction that we would ascribe moral relevance in relations with fellow humans or (non-human) animals. If we cannot take the moral appearance of interactions with social AI at face value, we need further normative grounds to distinguish relations in which moral status is properly ascribed from those where it is not

No full textDit jaar hostte Kunstinstituut Melly in Rotterdam de tentoonstelling ‘Bewaard’ van beeldend kunstenaar Sijben Rosa. Voor de tentoonstelling was Sijben in gesprek gegaan met vier mensen die aan het eind van hun leven stonden: Welke objecten zouden ze willen bewaren en waarom? Deze objecten vormden de basis voor een aantal papierpulp-sculpturen die de waarden en persoonlijkheden van Sijbens vaak oudere gesprekspartners ten voorschijn brachten.In de volgende uitwisseling met filosofie-promovendus Hans-Georg Eilenberger reflecteert Sijben op het maakproces en de betekenis van kunst in de confrontatie met vergankelijkheid, verlies en de dood. Boven alles is het een gesprek over de materialiteit van het kunstwerk in zijn (a)symmetrische verhouding tot de stoffelijkheid van het lichaam. Volgens Sijben heeft kunst de potentie om bepaalde aspecten van de menselijke ervaring uit te vergroten. Het ‘Bewaard’ project destilleerde de materiele betekenis van de uitgebeelde object door ze uit hun gewoonte omgeving te halen, in papierpulp te transformeren en in een museum te plaatsen. Deze “stofwisseling” weerspiegelt de transformatie van het lichaam in het sterf- en rouwproces, maar creëert geen exacte overeenstemming. In hun gesprek gaan Sijben en Eilenberger langs verschillende gebieden waarin kunst overlapt met de ervaring van ouder worden en sterven, en verkennen ze de ruimtes voor betekenisgeving die daarin schuilen.<br/
