    No full text
The increasing complexity of information systems, as well as the rapid development of new vulnerabilities and exploits, the security of campus networks needs to be hardened to minimize or eradicate security flaws. Aim: To discover the vulnerabilities and enhance the creation and deployment of secured campus network.  Place and Duration of study: University of Education, Winneba – Kumasi campus. Methodology:  The integration of De-Militarized zone and Honeypot techniques was used to beef up the security of the campus network against vulnerabilities and exploits. Penetration testing was used in the assessment of the University of Education’s network infrastructure, and to demonstrate attacks and intrusion into the network infrastructure. Results: Two firewall DMZ architecture techniques protect sensitive resources of the campus network by sanctioning the inflow and outflow of traffic, determining which segment allow and disallow traffic,   whiles the Honeypot techniques were configured to keep the attention of attackers diverted from the main network, the full strength of an attack, until the administrators are prepared to put the effective counter in place. The fusion of DMZ and, Honeypot provide the System Administrators to effectively management the security of the campus networks. Conclusion: Honeypots are used to detect vulnerabilities based on the attacker’s behaviour and, data collected by honeypots can be used to enhance other security technologies.  The fusion of DMZ and Honeypot into the security models of the campus network made it more robust

    No full text
Aims: In the discipline of computer vision, detecting and tracking moving objects in a succession of video frames is a critical process. Image noise, complicated object motion and forms, and video real-time processing are some of the challenges faced by existing methods. Hence, they are computationally complex and susceptible to noise. This work utilized Canny Edge and Optical Flow (CE-OF) techniques for identifying and tracking moving objects in video files. Methodology: Video sequence datasets in Avi and Mp4 format from MathWorks and YouTube were used to evaluate the developed CE-OF technique. The video clip\u27s frames were sampled several times and the frame rate display was calculated. The original images were converted to grayscale, preprocessed, and CE-OP was applied to identify and track the moving object. The results of the CE-OF and optical flow techniques in terms of accuracy, precision, false acceptance rate, false rejection rate, and processing time were obtained and compared. The performance of the developed technique was evaluated using accuracy, precision, false acceptance rate (FAR), false rejection rate (FRR) and processing time. The results obtained were 94.12%, 92.86%, 25.00%, 25.00%, and 19.51s for Mp4; and 93.33%, 90.91%, 20.00%, 20.00%, and 44.11s for Avi video 1 format, respectively. Conclusion: The developed CE-OF is a better competition in terms of accuracy and time compared with well-known techniques in the literature. The CE-OF technique performed better compared with the conventional methods in detecting and tracking a moving object. Therefore, it can be adopted in the designing of intelligent surveillance systems

An Adaptable Ontology for Easy and Efficient University Data Management in Niger Delta University

    No full text
The structure, variety and quantity of some current web content are limited in efficient exploration due to difficulty in searching and locating a specific content.  A case is the Niger Delta University where there is no unified online structure holding relevant university data. This is because there is no common data model to manage the data for which such query can easily be interpreted semantically. Therefore, this paper presents the application of semantic web technology for the unification of university data management. This research prepares the ground for the advent of software agents and other applications that require structured data for their computational processes. The ontology development follows an iterative path of the Object-Oriented System Analysis and Design (OOSAD) methodology. SPARQL was used as the query language for testing the ontology. The result is a semantically structured data that is deployable and can be expanded and adapted in other institutions

Challenges in Using Computerized Systems for Admission into Colleges of Education

    No full text
In most educational institutions, the computerized selection system (CSS) consists of a collection of different hardware and software requiring disparate supporting infrastructures and offering little in the way of integration. However, university admission is no exception, but it is organized very differently throughout the world. Thus, the goal is to determine the challenges in the use of the computerized system for admission into colleges of education affiliated with the University of Cape Coast. The methodology for the study was a descriptive design with a quantitative method. The total population for the study was 255, with a sample size of 192 admission officers, quality assurance staff, and heads of departments. The results of the study show that one of the challenges of a computerized system for admission is that the system forces some candidates initially selected to grant their place in the list to others far behind. The study’s findings discovered a negative weak association between the challenges of using a computerized system for admission and its’ efficiency

Suggestion Generation for Erroneous Words in Tamil Documents Using N-gram Technique

    No full text
A spell checker is a tool that finds and corrects erroneous words and grammatical mistakes in a text document. Spelling error detection and correction techniques are widely used by text editing systems, search engines, text to speech and speech to text conversion systems, machine translation systems and optical character recognition systems. The spell checkers for European languages and some Indic languages are well developed. However, perhaps, owing to Tamil being a morphologically rich and agglutinative language this has been a challenging task. Erroneous words and grammatical mistakes can occur in sentences due to various reasons. Erroneous words can be classified into two categories, namely non-word errors and real-word errors. This work aims to correct non-word errors in Tamil documents by suggesting alternatives. The proposed approach uses letter-level and word-level n-gram, stemming and hash table techniques. Test results show that the suggestions generated by the system are with 95% accuracy

A Statistical Analysis and Exploration on Atlantic Hurricanes Database (HURDAT2); Do We Expect the Worst?

    No full text
Hurricane occurrence exploration is a heavy task that requires sophisticated methods to accurately determine the occurrence and the impact of damage on the tropical environs. To control massive damage, several techniques have been developed to measure the accuracy of track forecasting. The accurate analysis and exploration of the occurrence of hurricanes are very crucial for the affected environs evaluation within a short time to minimize the loss of human life and property. Nevertheless, the exact analysis and exploration of these hurricanes is challenging and time-consuming. Therefore, this study proposed a statistical model whereby the analysis of variance (ANOVA) a linear regression scientific data statistical analysis model is applied on the dataset of Atlantic hurricane database (HURDAT2) for the exploration of hurricane occurrence and damage in the tropical environs. The best tracks of a 6 hour interval, location (latitude, and longitude), wind speed, central pressure of all identified hurricanes and subtropical typhoons from the year 2008 to 2017 (10 year period) are used to determine the  R2 coefficient, which measures the goodness and fitness of the model to reveal the variability of the real data. Statistical significance and reliability of the data are tested on significance  P-value <0.05 where four different parameters are considered for the analysis in order to determine the destructive of these hurricanes in the tropical environs; latitude (x1), longitude (x2), the wind speed (x3), and central pressure. The results of our model proved significant with an accuracy of 99.3%, and a mean standard error (MSE) of 1.4952 for all the hurricanes that were analyzed, and the year 2012 was established as a year that had much damage

Residue Number System-Based Approach to Minimise Energy Consumption in Wireless Sensor Networks

    No full text
This study harnesses the useful number properties of the residue number system (RNS) to minimise energy consumption in a wireless sensor network. In a traditional cluster-based wireless sensor network, large bit representations of aggregated packets are transmitted to the base station. However, large bit patterns of packets are slower compared to smaller bits. The proposed approach splits aggregated data into a pre-specified number of transmission channels using a moduli set. Cheap energy cost routes from the cluster heads are computed to deliver the chunked aggregated data to the base station. Forward and reverse converters are proposed to encode data into RNS and decode the RNS data that reaches the base station. MATLAB simulation is used to implement the proposed data splitting method and to evaluate network performance. The experimental results suggest that the proposed method is more effective at minimising transmission energy when compared with traditional approaches in which complete packets are transmitted

Evaluating Soft Keyboard Layouts by Using Paper Mockups

    No full text
Two experiments to compare text-entry were carried out using Soft Keyboard Layouts. Paper mockups were used and we carried out manual timing in a relaxed situation, even though within a classroom environment. Volunteer students were paired and made to work in such groups, serving as participants and also helping out in the timing process. One set of students served as participants at first and the other timed them. They then switched roles halfway and exchanged the tasks of participation and timing. Participants tapped the phrase “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” on each keyboard layouts five times using stylus. The time for word entry was measured and used to determine the speeds; which were found to be 24.8 to 34.3 for QWERTY Keyboard Layout and 11.9 to 14.8 for Opti Layout. We discussed the advantages and shortfalls of the methods of evaluation

    No full text
A data center is a physical facility that organizations use to house their critical applications and data. An application delivery controller, router, switch, firewall, storage system, and server make up the design for the data center. Data security in the data center is critical due to these components\u27 role in storing and managing critical business data and applications. An Android application has therefore been developed that can be used on smart phones to monitor and follow the performance of the data center camera monitoring system. Surveillance cameras in the data center allows the data center manager to monitor employees, machines, and all data center facilities from his office via his mobile phone, or even when he is out of the office, and to view a report of faults and maintenance to ensure the efficiency of the system. Using the application, the engineer can also control the cameras by panning and zooming in on the camera images in the data center, playback previous recordings of cameras, and review fault reports to find out the malfunctions of the monitoring system from anywhere with an Internet connection
