    Digital mental health is becoming increasingly common. This includes use of smartphones and wearables to collect data in real time during day-to-day life (remote measurement technologies, RMT). Such data could capture changes relevant to depression for use in objective screening, symptom management and relapse prevention. This approach may be particularly accessible to young people of today as the smartphone generation. However, there is limited research on how such a complex intervention would work in the real world. We conducted a collaborative realist review of RMT for depression in young people. Here we describe how, why, for whom and in what contexts RMT appear to work or not work for depression in young people and make recommendations for future research and practice. Ethical, data protection and methodological issues need to be resolved and standardized; without this, RMT may be currently best used for self-monitoring and feedback to the healthcare professional where possible, to increase emotional self-awareness, enhance the therapeutic relationship and monitor the effectiveness of other interventions.

    South Africa is experiencing a rapidly growing diabetes epidemic that threatens its healthcare system. Research on the determinants of diabetes in South Africa receives considerable attention due to the lifestyle changes accompanying South Africa's rapid urbanization since the fall of Apartheid. However, few studies have investigated how segments of the Black South African population, who continue to endure Apartheids institutional discriminatory legacy, experience this transition. This paper explores the association between individual and area-level socioeconomic status and diabetes prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control within a sample of Black South Africans aged 45 years or older in three municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal. Cross-sectional data were collected on 3,685 participants from February 2017 to February 2018. Individual-level socioeconomic status was assessed with employment status and educational attainment. Area-level deprivation was measured using the most recent South African Multidimensional Poverty Index scores.

    In search for scientific collaboration: South Africa's science diplomacy towards Africa

    To bolster science diplomacy in Africa, South Africa has through the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) entered into science bilateral agreements with many countries in the continent. Additional agreements and engagements exist through Science Councils and institutions of higher learning. To strengthen its science diplomacy imperatives in Africa, DSI has established a Science and Technology Diplomacy program that explores possible ways of strengthening links with countries and institutions in Africa. To understand how South Africa can pursue its scientific engagement with the continent of Africa, a prospecting exercise for opportunities of engagement was done through science dialogues. The findings suggest that to meaningfully contribute to the development of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) agenda of the African Union (AU), South Africa requires a well-defined objective and a plan that is based on a clear understanding of the general strengths and weaknesses of science, technology, and development in Africa as well as the specific challenges within individual partner countries. Supporting continental science and technology strategy (e.g., AU's STISA) and science and technology initiatives that contribute to developing and supporting research capacity and infrastructure should guide South Africa's science diplomacy towards Africa.

    A nonlinear fractional epidemic model for the Marburg virus transmission with public health education

    In this study, a deterministic model for the dynamics of Marburg virus transmission that incorporates the impact of public health education is being formulated and analyzed. The Caputo fractional-order derivative is used to extend the traditional integer model to a fractional-based model. The model's positivity and boundedness are also under investigation. We obtain the basic reproduction number R0 and establish the conditions for the local and global asymptotic stability for the disease-free equilibrium of the model. Under the Caputo fractional-order derivative, we establish the existence-uniqueness theory using the Banach contraction mapping principle for the solution of the proposed model. We use functional techniques to demonstrate the proposed model's stability under the Ulam-Hyers condition. The numerical solutions are being determined through the Predictor-Corrector scheme. Awareness, as a form of education that lowers the risk of danger, is reducing susceptibility and the risk of infection. We employ numerical simulations to showcase the variety of realistic parameter values that support the argument that human awareness, as a form of education, considerably lowers susceptibility and the risk of infection.
