    No full text
Nowadays, researchers are alarming that our everyday food products may be contaminated with plastics during the processing and packaging process. Plastic polymers and harmful chemical additives, such as plasticizers, dyes or modifiers, may enter our body along with food in the form of microplastic particles and cause harm to human health. Risk assessment of microplastics in food products is still at an early stage due to the heterogeneity of research and methodology. Material and methods. The present study analyzed the abrasion of plastic particles from several different Himalayan salt and black pepper grinders with burrs made of polymers using FT-IR and SEM techniques. Results. The study confirms the effect of the polymers used on the amount of microplastic released as well as the rate of wear of the grinder burrs from the ground spice. Conclusions. However, determining the impact of using such devices on human health requires further research.W obecnych czasach badacze alarmują, że nasze codzienne produkty spożywcze mogą być zanieczyszczone tworzywami sztucznymi, towarzyszącymi procesowi przetwarzania i pakowania. Materiał i metody. W niniejszym badaniach analizowano ścieranie cząstek plastiku z kilku różnych młynków do soli himalajskiej i pieprzu czarnego z żarnami wykonanymi z polimerów przy użyciu technik FT-IR i SEM. Wyniki. Przeprowadzone badania potwierdzają wpływ wykorzystanych polimerów na ilość uwalnianego mikroplastiku, jak i tempo zużycia żarna młynków od mielonej przyprawy. Wnioski. Określenie wpływu wykorzystania tego typu urządzeń na zdrowie człowieka wymaga jednak prowadzenia dalszych badań

Pentalogy of Cantrell: a case report

    No full text
Cantrell’s pentalogy is a rare developmental disorder occurring between the 14th and 18th day of embryonic life. Diagnosis is possible in the first trimester, when the rupturing of the continuity of the anterior chest cavity and abdominal walls is usually found. Ectopic heart and umbilical hernia is also characteristic. In this article, a case of a thirty-three-year-old patient in second pregnancy was described, who was diagnosed with developmental disorders during a routine visit to a gynecologist. Woman was referred to the Laboratory of Prenatal Research, where the fetus was diagnosed with: umbilical cord hernia, diaphragmatic hernia with diaphragmatic defect, sternal defect, ectopic heart and pericardial defect, the swelling of the entire fetus – NT 5 mm – and the reverse flow in the DV were visualized. The woman and the child’s father, after having been presented with the prognosis, decided to terminate the pregnancy. Due to the heterogeneous picture of disorders occurring in pentalogy of Cantrell and the small number of cases described in the literature, each case should be approached with caution and in an individual manner. Abnormalities in the structure of the heart additionally compounded by coexisting disorders are crucial for the prognosis and they determine the method and order of treatment

Patients from nursing and residential care facilities in the practice of Emergency Medical Teams: a two-year study

    No full text
Background. The aim of the study was to analyze Emergency Medical Services Team’s (EMSTs) interventions to patients residing in nursing care (NCF) and residential care facilities (RCF), taking into account the patient’s gender, age, reasons for the call, time of intervention. Material and methods. The study included a 2-year retrospective analysis of the EMSTs’ interventions in Lublin Province (northern part), Poland, for the period January 1st, 2021 – December 31st, 2022. The data comes from the departure documentation of teams intervening in the State Emergency Medical Services system: the departure order card and the emergency medical response card. Results. There were 177 EMSTs’ interventions selected, representing 1.27% of the total medical interventions. Age had a statistically significant impact on the reason for calling the EMST (p<0.001). The highest mean age was for neurological disorders (77±18 years), while the lowest was for consciousness disorders (44±18 years). No association was shown between the location of the patient’s residence (NCF vs. RCF). Conclusions. In the group under study, interventions due to circulatory and respiratory disorders dominated. The demand for medical procedures that exceeded the capacity of care facilities was high (69% of cases transport to the ED, 44% of interventions with pharmacotherapy)

Bariatric surgery: a modern method reducing the risk of cancer development

    No full text
Recently, we have encountered a fascinating article written by Davey et al. [1] that investigated the potential colorectal cancer prevention effects of bariatric surgery. We consider this topic to be extremely important to both individuals with obesity and doctors, because more frequent qualifications for bariatric surgery will not only contribute to weight loss but also reduce the risk of cancer development

Pharmacological support treatment of non-suicidal self-injuries among children and adolescents: a narrative review

    No full text
Non-suicidal self-injuries (NSSI) constitute a significant problem among children and adolescents, especially during the global burden of mental disorders worldwide. Moreover, such behaviors are perceived as a risk factor for the suicidal behaviors occurrence in the future. Thus, it would appear necessary to search for effective forms of their treatment. A pharmacological approach may play a supportive role. This study is a narrative review summarizing scientific reports on possible pharmacological support treatment of NSSI among children and adolescents. Internet scientific bases were searched for literature, including original research, review articles and case reports. There are many possible pharmacological interventions that may reduce the incidence of self-harm behaviors. Antihistamines and neuroleptics can be used successfully in the acute phase. In turn, second-generation antipsychotics and potentially naltrexone seem to be the most effective in long-term treatment. Although psychotherapy is the basic form of NSSI treatment, a psychopharmacological approach may play an essential role in reducing the incidence of self-harm behaviors. Nevertheless, the use of psychotropic medications is prohibited in most cases and may be limited due to their side effects. Moreover, there is a need to validate their efficiency in next studies to gather strong evidences concerning their widespread use

Investigation of GST and drug resistance protein expressions in relation to chemotherapy in breast cancer

    No full text
Background. During cancer therapy, resistance to chemotherapeutic agents is common and often linked to multidrug resistance mechanisms. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, including multidrug resistance (MDR) proteins, multidrug resistance-associated proteins (MRPs), and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP), are implicated in drug resistance. Material and methods. Protein expressions were determined in the tumor and surrounding tumor free breast tissues of 145 breast cancer patients by immunohistochemistry technique. Among 145 patients, 50 received preoperative (neoadjuvant) chemotherapy, and 95 received postoperative (adjuvant) chemotherapy. Results. In 50 neoadjuvant breast cancer patients, GSTA1, GSTK1, GSTM1, GSTO1, GSTP1, GSTS1, GSTT1, GSTZ1, MDR1, MRP1, MRP2, MRP3, MRP7, and BCRP expressions were higher in tumor epithelium compared to normal epithelium (p<0.05). In 95 adjuvant breast cancer patients, GSTA1, GSTK1, GSTM1, GSTP1, GSTT1, GSTZ1, MDR1, MRP1, MRP2, and MRP3 expressions were higher in tumor epithelium than in normal epithelium (p<0.05). GSTP1, GSTT1, and MRP3 expressions were significantly higher in neoadjuvant compared to adjuvant-treated breast cancer patients’ tumor tissues (p<0.05). Conclusions. GSTP1, GSTT1, and MRP3 may be important in inactivating the chemotherapeutic agents used in platinum-based treatment and are thus responsible for the drug resistance in breast cancer patients

Preventive medicine in clinical practice: rationale based on the diversity of implemented interventions with spa patients in Poland in 2018-2023

    No full text
Background. Spa treatment is widely used in today’s medicine and it is increasingly gaining recognition among patients. Its essence is the application of natural therapeutic stimuli, individually selected according to the stage of the disease. Balneo-physical treatments carried out in spas result in a reduction in ailments, as well as an improvement in the quality of life of patients. At the same time, it should be emphasized that the treatment of patients requires an appropriate plan, considering the duration of therapy. The aim of this study was to provide empirical argumentation as a basis for innovative modifications of spa treatment in Poland. Material and methods. Health problems and patient ages were grouped according to the methodology of the Central Statistical Office. Results. In 2018, the largest number of patients used services because of rheumatic diseases (around 300,000), followed by cardiological (over 43,000) and neurological interventions (over 33,000). Rheumatic interventions remained in the lead in 2023, while cardiological ones swapped the ranking position with neurological interventions. Conclusions. The epidemiological data obtained between 2018 and 2023, i.e. including the post-pandemic period, provide a set of indications justifying the indispensable increase in the importance of preventive medicine in daily clinical practice, as well as during spa treatment

    No full text
Interpersonal communication is an inseparable element of human existence. It is extremely important from the pedagogical point of view in the teacher-student relationship. The article reviews the literature in the field of non-verbal communication between the teacher and the student. Both verbal and non-verbal communication play an important role, interacting with each other. Effective communication depends on the nonverbal aspect. Non-verbal communication affects the teacher’s relationship with students, as well as motivation for action and optimization of teaching. Material and methods: The article is of a review nature. Results: An attempt was made to discuss the non-verbal communication of the teacher with the pupils on the basis of the existing literature on the subject. Conclusions: Non-verbal communication in the teacher-student relationship is an important component of the educational process; the teacher, through non-verbal code, transmits an emotional charge, which is a component of both the relationship, the classroom atmosphere and the motivation to learn.Komunikacja interpersonalna to nierozłączny element ludzkiej egzystencji. Jest on niezwykle istotny z pedagogicznego punktu widzenia w relacji nauczyciel-wychowanek.
