Effective Selection Criteria for Predicting Thermotolerance in Wheat under Field Conditions
A field experiment was conducted at the experimental area of the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during Rabi season. Five Wheat cultivars (PBW-343, WH-542, PBW-502, PBW-509 and PBW-3765) sown on six dates of sowing starting from 31st October at weekly intervals up to 5th December to find suitable thermotolerance traits and genotypes. Amongst eleven traits recorded at different growth stages showed that the largest variability was observed in crop growth rate (CGR), Leaf area index (LAI) grain spike weight ratio (GSPWR), spike growth duration (SGD), cumulative growing degree days (GDD) accumulated during vegetative and reproductive phenophases and grain attributes and grain yield at maturity. The highest grain yield was recorded in cultivars PBW-343, WH-542 and PBW-502. The maximum grain yield was correlated with longer filling duration, higher crop growth rate and grain spike weight ratio at anthesis phase. The results revealed that the cumulative growing degree-days (GDD) accumulated more during the reproductive phases as compared with the vegetative phases of wheat cultivars. The GDD is the effective selection criteria for screening thermotolerance in wheat cultivars
Neural Differentiation and Developmental Effects of Honey Bee Venom on PC12 Cells: A Comparison to Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)
The rat pheochromocytoma cell line, PC12 that in in-vitro condition under inductive factors differentiate and convert into neuron-like cells. Researches have shown that different factors, for example, NGF and bee venom or its components have different effects on proliferation, survival and differentiation of the cells. In this study the PC12 cells were seeded in the culture medium (RPMI-1640) at 5µ103 cell ∕well in poly-D-lysine (0.05mg∕ml) coated 24- well culture plates, allowed to grow for 24hrs, and PC12 cells were treated with NGF for 10 days and were surveyed morphologically in the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th days and used various concentrations of honey bee venom for cellular differentiation analysis that the optimum concentrations were 1μg/ml and 3μg/ml, and using NGF with the concentration of 50ng/ml and the venom with the concentrations of 1μg/ml and 3μg/ml simultaneously. Ex-situ Studies of Captive Breeding of Ompok bimaculatus (Bloch, 1794) in Tripura
Broodstock (37 males and 83 females) of Ompok bimaculatus was sampled from Rivers Feni, Muhuri, Gomoti and also from Hurijala wetland of Tripura during November 2008 to February 2010. During sampling of fish species, water samples from different locations were also sampled in order to know the water quality characteristics of the habitat. The broodstock was provided specific live feed and water quality during acclimatization. The maturity cycle of the species was examined with gonad during the monsoon period. During breeding season the gravid females and males were identified with some specific phenotypic characteristics. Induced spawning was done under some particular aquaculture conditions only
Effect of Anaerobically Digested Slurry of Cow Dung and Kitchen Waste on the Seed Quality in Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.)
The present study was carried out to see the effect of anaerobically digested slurry of cow dung and kitchen waste on the seed quality parameters in Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.). The seeds were treated with both cow dung slurry and kitchen waste slurry (100% and diluted to 50% with H2O) and kept for different time durations (6 hours and 18 hours). The seed germination was increased when the kitchen waste slurry was diluted to 50% and kept for 6 hours during daytime. Cow dung slurry when used as such (100%) for 6 hrs increased the percent seed germination and seedling length significantly thus increasing the seed vigour I and II
Effect on Physicochemical Characters and Bioactivity of Argemone mexicana in Different Plant Extraction Methods
A study was conducted to find out the variation in physicochemical characters and bioactivity in plant extract prepared by two different methods, in order to decide a preferential method. Methanolic extract of Argemone mexicana plant extract was prepared by Soxhlet extraction method and reflux method. Bioactivity of plant extract was ascertained by a brine shrimp lethality test. The percentage yield of methanolic extract was 18% and 42% in soxhlet and reflux extraction methods respectively. In the first method, extract was greenish brown and sticky, but blackish and nonsticky in later method. Soxhlet method showed solubility in ethanol, chloroform, methanol and acetone whereas the reflux method extract did not show solubility in methanol. In both the method, plant extract was positive for alkaloids and saponins tested with standard methods. Nauplii of brine shrimp were hatched in artificial seawater with routine technique and collected in a test tube. The methanolic extract at concentrations of 250, 500 and 750µg/ml was tested on quantified numbers of larvae, in comparison to negative and positive control to test bioactivity. Mortalities were noted after 24 hrs post treatment and calculated as LC50. The LC50 was lower (118.23µg/ml) in Soxhlet extraction method, as compared to the reflux method (192.69µg/ml). The above results indicated that soxhlet extraction is superior to the reflux method to obtain better bioactivity
Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Gene Polymorphism in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease
Several genetic investigations have been attempted to elucidate the association of gene polymorphism of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) in coronary artery disease. This study was conducted to investigate the role of gene polymorphism of ACE in patients with coronary artery disease. The study included fifty-six numbers of patients with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease where proven angiographically and fifty-six numbers of healthy individuals of sex matched as a control group. The patients and control group were subjected to routine investigations, assays like, serum cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density Lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C). Genomic DNA was extracted and analyzed for angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion/deletion polymorphism using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). When we compared the genotypes of patients with coronary artery disease and controls, it was observed that all three genotypes were not statistically different also no significant difference of alleles in ACE gene genotypes was found. Inpatient serum cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-C (P <0.001, P <0.001 and P <0.001: respectively) showed a significant increase than the control group. In patients, LDL-C level was not more significant than controls. In the evaluated population, we conclude that the gene I/D polymorphism for ACE are not risk associated and may not be a useful marker for coronary artery disease
Effective Biosurfactants production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and its efficacy on different Oils
A rhamnolipid producing bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from contaminated soil with oily wastes. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa has grown with glucose and corn oil as a carbon source produced biosurfactant. This biosurfactant was purified by procedures that included chloroform-ethanol extraction and 0.05M bicarbonate treatments. The active compound was identified as rhamnolipid by using thin layer chromatography. The biosurfactant efficacy was tested on coconut oil, groundnut oil, sunflower oil and olive oil. The coconut oil responded better and gave a maximum level of 1cm than the olive oil, groundnut oil and sunflower oil

Faces are of utmost importance for human social life. They provide valuable information about the identity, expression, gaze, health and age of a person. Recent face processing models assume highly interconnected neural structures between different temporal, occipital, and frontal brain areas with several feedback loops. A selective deficit in the visual learning and recognition of faces is known as prosopagnosia, which can be found both in acquired and congenital forms. Any neural tissue damage in the face recognition network of the brain can cause prosopagnosia, a condition that can best be defined as a selective impairment of the visual learning and recognition of faces.
