The association between psoriasis and coeliac disease
Psoriasis is known to be associated with inflammatory comorbidities. Coeliac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy caused by permanent intolerance to dietary gliadin, which is present in wheat, barley, and rye.(1) The disease occurs in predisposed individuals, and is characterized clinically by malabsorption and histologically by villous atrophy and crypt hyperplasia, which improves when the causal antigen is removed through a gluten-free diet.(1) We investigated the relationship between psoriasis and CD in Denmark. Four variants of the Fourier-analytic transference principle
We survey four instances of the Fourier analytic ‘transference principle’ or ‘dense model lemma’, which allows one to approximate an unbounded function on the integers by a bounded function with similar Fourier transform. Such a result forms a component of a general method pioneered by Green to count solutions to a single linear equation in a sparse subset of integers
EXAMINING TWITTER DIALOGS TO SUPPORT CORPORATE SOCIAL INNOVATION: A TEXT MINING APPROACH
Social media has become a “public arena of citizenship”. The diverse customer activities on social media, such as debating social issues or punishing companies’ unethical actions, create a vast volume of dialog data that is valuable for improving business practices. This study examines corporate social responsibility (CSR) dialogs on Twitter and reveals how rich dialog data contributes to corporate social innovation (CSI). Drawing on value co-creation literature, a framework is proposed for text mining of Twitter dialogs and is tested using a U.K. retailer case study. The central assumption of the framework is that through comparing the worldviews of a company and its stakeholders embedded in the dialogs, the cognitive distance can be reduced (Lusch & Nambisan 2015), thus, allowing the company to design CSR programs in line with stakeholders’ expectation. In Twitter dialog data, three CSI contexts were identified in the company’s posts, namely exploring, co-creating and communicating. Based on these CSI contexts, customer knowledge regarding “know-what”, “know-who”, “know-how” and “know-why” (Mirvis et al. 2016) was extracted using text mining. We further investigated whether customer tweets contain CSI ideas through experts’ collective labeling, and we analyzed how customer knowledge helps predict crucial CSI ideas using decision tree models. The models achieve high performance in classifying non-ideas and CSI ideas, which assure the practical implications of the proposed dialog mining framework. Importantly, the framework helps to bridge cognitive distance by discovering the knowledge in the customer domain and promoting knowledge internalization in the company domain. Though the findings of the case study have difficulties in generalization, the mind-set and methodology is applicable, not limited to CSI, but to new product development and service innovation
Synthesis and structural characterization of lanthanum and cerium substituted cyclopentadienyl borohydride complexes
The lanthanide borohydrides [Ln(BH4)3(THF)n] [Ln = La, n = 4 (1); Ln = Ce, n = 3.5] were treated with the substituted cyclopentadienyl potassium transfer agents KCptt (Cptt = C5H3tBu2-1,3), KCpttt (Cpttt = C5H2tBu3-1,2,4) and KCp′′′ (Cp′′′ = C5H2(SiMe3)3-1,2,4) in various reaction conditions to yield the heteroleptic lanthanide complexes [La(Cptt)2(µ-BH4)]2 (2), [La(Cpttt)(BH4)2(THF)2] (3), [La(Cpttt)(µ-BH4)2]6 (4), [Ce(Cpttt)(BH4)(µ-BH4)(THF)]2 (5), [La(Cpttt)2(BH4)] (6) and [Ln(Cp′′′)2(BH4)(THF)] (Ln = La, 7; Ce, 8) by salt metathesis protocols. Complexes 1-8 have been variously characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, multi-nuclear NMR and FTIR spectroscopies, and elemental analyses
DAMAGE TOLERANCE OF CARBON/EPOXY QUASI-INTERWOVEN COMPOSITES SUBJECTED TO LOW VELOCITY IMPACTS
Robotic dry fibre placement (RDFP) is a preforming technology with the potential of mass-producing laminar composite preforms at the speed and quality required for the automotive and aerospace industries. The RDFP technology enables the placement on unidirectional (UD) fibres in arbitrary in-plane directions, producing a laminate with tailored mechanical properties. Due to the layered nature of these lay-ups, the resulting composites exhibit poor out-of-plane properties.Quasi-interwoven lay-ups produced by the RDFP methodology present a potential method for creating preforms with layer connectivity and crimp. The RDFP carbon fibre preforms produced for this work were based on the Advanced Placed Ply (AP-Ply) structure, with pin spacing ranging from 2.5mm to 10mm. The narrowest pin spacing creates a cross-ply non-crimp preform whilst the widest spacing creates a quasi-interwoven composite upon consolidation, with high levels of layer crimp. Rectangular test coupons were cut according to the Queen Mary test protocol and subjected to low velocity impact and compression after impact testing. A distinguishable improvement in damage resistance was observed for the quasi-interwoven lay-up when compared with the non-crimp lay-up. Despite the high layer undulation levels seen with the quasi-interwoven lay-ups, these specimen have comparable compression after impact strengths to those with lower levels of undulation.<br/

A 9Å structure of the WzzB protein reveals a novel transmembrane ring
Wzz is an integral inner membrane protein involved in regulating the length of lipopolysaccharide O-antigen glycans and essential for the virulence of many Gram negative pathogens. In all Wzz homologs, the large periplasmic domain is proposed to be anchored by two transmembrane helices but no information is available for the transmembrane and cytosolic domains. Here we have studied purified oligomeric Wzz complexes using cryo-electron microscopy and resolved the transmembrane regions within a semi-continuous detergent micelle. The transmembrane helices of each monomer display a right-handed superhelical twist, and do not interact with the neighbouring transmembrane domains. Modeling, flexible fitting and multiscale simulation approaches were used to study the full-length complex and to provide explanations for the influence of the lipid bilayer on its oligomeric status. Based on structural and in silico observations, we propose a new mechanism for O-antigen chain-length regulation that invokes synergy of Wzz and its polymerase partner, Wzy
Towards fluid-structure interaction with nonlinear deformation in the structure
The authors are working towards the development of an open source platform for solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems that is scalable on high performance computing (HPC) systems. Using existing open source software, we have built a prototype application to demonstrate the benefits of high performance computing for this class of problem. Our work is novel in that our parallel structural solver includes nonlinear behaviour, so the structure can fail during an FSI analysis. In the conference, we will describe how the open source software platform has been implemented. We will also report on how it performs on high performance computers, both in terms of scalability and run time. The paper will be of interest to academics and industry practitioners who may benefit from access to a scalable open source platform for FSI that is built upon OpenFOAM and can simulate nonlinear deformatio
