The Effects of Exercise on Perceived Barriers and Benefits of Exercise by Cancer Survivors Post Treatment
Exercise may be used to attenuate cancer treatment-related side effects. However, the majority of cancer survivors do not participate in regular exercise.
Purpose: This study examined changes in fitness parameters as well as perceived exercise benefits and barriers held by post-treatment adult cancer survivors, who participated in a 12-week structured exercise program.
Methods: This study used a randomized controlled trial design. Participants were 24 post-treatment adult cancer survivors with various cancer diagnoses. The Exercise Benefits /Barriers Subscale (EBBS) questionnaire was used to evaluate perceived exercise benefits and barriers. Data was analyzed using a mixed-between-within ANOVA.
Results: There were no significant differences in the total EBBS score (128.7 ± 23.2 v. 142.6 ± 17.8; p=.20) or the benefits (86.4 ± 17.2 v. 96.3 ± 12.9; p=.31) and barriers subscales (42.3 ± 7.8 v. 46.5 ± 6.1; p=.14). However, those in the exercise group were significantly more likely to respond that exercise participation would not cause fatigue (2.42 ±.90 v. 3.25 ± .45; p=0.04), but may decrease fatigue (3.0 ± .60 v. 3.17 ±.58; p=.03).
Conclusion: Among cancer survivors, exercise participation may strengthen the perception that exercise reduces, rather than causes, fatigue
Searching Ability of Pupal Parasitoid, Dirhinus giffardii (Silvestri) on Bactrocera zonata (Saunders) at Various Depths of Plant Debris
The present study was carried out to determine the searching ability of pupal parasitoid, Dirhinus giffardii of Bactrocera zonata in the Bio Control Research Laboratory, | department of Entomology, SAU, Tandojam, at temperature 27 ± 1ºC and 60 ± 5% relative humidity. Adults of fruit fly were fed with water, sugar and needo milk powder, whereas, Dirhinus giffardii were fed with honey and water solution. Ten days old D. giffardies were used against 20 pupae of Bactrocera zonata in the experiment and data recorded on parasitized pupae and un-parasitized pupae after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. The results in all treatments indicates that highest parasitized pupae were at peak level of (16.66) after 72 hours age of pupae on the depth of 0 cm in plant debris followed by 4 cm depth (16.33), whereas lowest parasitized pupae were recorded at 5cm depth (13.66) after 72 hours of age inside plant debris. Likewise, the highest un-parasitized pupae were at peak level of (14.00) after 24 hours of age of pupae on the depth of 3cm in plant debris followed by 1cm depth (13.00), whereas lowest un parasitized pupae were recorded at 4cm depth (11.66) after 24 hours of age inside plant debris. Synthesis and Characterization of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles for Antibacterial Applications
ZnO nanoparticles are synthesized for antibacterial applications by a simple co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals that the synthesized ZnO has hexagonal crystal structure with mean crystallite size of 29 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) shows pure ZnO with uniform morphology. UV–VIS absorption spectroscopy yield an absorption edge in the range 300-400 nm which corresponds to a band gap energy of 3.50 eV. Antibacterial activity of ZnO nanoparticles is tested against gram positive and gram negative bacteria by using agar-well method. These ZnO nanoparticles are found to be strongly antimicrobial as they effectively prevent the growth of many test microorganisms with a small minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ~ 80 – 280 µg/ml
Sub-Cellular Damage of Hepatocytes Caused by Different Doses of Diclofenac Sodium in Rabbit
Diclofenac sodium is a potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug that is extensively prescribed in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, postoperative pain, and chronic pain associated with cancer. The present study was designed to elucidate the qualitative and quantitative changes in rough endoplasmic reticulum of hepatocytes after recommended single, double and triple therapeutic dose of Diclofenac sodium in rabbits. The aim of study is to minimize the indiscriminate use of this drug in community and among physicians. Experimental study was carried at Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) from March 2009 to June 2010. Eighty eight healthy animals of three months age and 900~1000 gm body weight were isolated from the animal house of DUHS. These animals were divided into four groups categorized into Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, each containing twenty two animals. Diclofenac sodium were administered intraperitoneally with the daily doses of 2, 4, and 6 mg/kg body weight for 14 consecutive days in Groups B, C and D while the control group (Group A) received normal saline. Animals were sacrificed on day fifteen and livers were removed and fixed in 4% gluterldehyde. They were processed for electron microscopy and examined under transmission electron microscope. Data was collected and subjected for statistical analysis a ‘P’ value less than 0.05 was taken as significant. It was observed that Diclofenac sodium produces significant changes in hepatocytes. There was de-granulation and swelling of the cisternae of Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) when the dose is doubled and these changes were highly significant when the dose is increased to three times the therapeutic

A decision making model for building decision support system is reported here that is developed through working with fireground incident commanders of the United Kingdom. The model is suitable for decision making in non-routine situations. A detailed description of the development of the model is available in Shaikh (2011). The Effect of Mulberry Fruits Consumption on Lipid Profiles in Hypercholesterolemic Subjects: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Mulberry (Morus alba) fruit is abundant nutrients and phytochemicals, especially anthocyanins. Mulberries have anti-oxidant and anti-hyperlipidaemic effects both in vitroand animal models. However, the effect of mulberry fruits on lipid profiles in human is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of mulberry fruit consumption on lipid profiles in hypercholesterolemic subjects. This study is an experimental study, with a randomized controlled trial. Fifty-eight hypercholesterolemic subjects (aged 30-60 years) were recruited. The intervention group received freeze-dried mulberry 45 g (325 mg anthocyanins) per day for six weeks. The control group had their usual dietary intake for the same period of time. After six weeks, mulberry consumption significantly decreased the level of total cholesterol (TC) (- 3.73 % vs. 3.33 %, p < 0.001) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (- 6.53 % vs. 0.15 %, p < 0.001) compared to the control group. No change in triacylglycerol (TAG) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Mulberry consumption ameliorates TC and LDL-C concentrations. The mulberry fruits may be an alternative therapy for hypercholesterolemia patients and a cardiovascular disease protective for people in general
Use of Information Parameters as Criterion for Determination of Biological Activity of Hepatoprotective Preparations
Possibility of use of the information parameters characterizing adaptational and regenerative opportunities of tissue system of an organ as potential criteria for an assessment of biological activity of hepatoprotective preparations is investigated in this research. Influence of enzymatic hydrolyzate of Chlorophytum comosum (L.) on a morphofunctional condition of a liver of rats at experimental toxic damage of organ and in norm was studied. The assessment of morphofunctional condition of a liver under the influence of a preparation was carried out as with use of traditional morphological, biochemical and histologic parameters, and by means of information parameters, which were earlier used for an evaluation of the adaptative and regenerative opportunities of organs of mammals. As a result of research the hepatoprotective effect of enzymatic hydrolyzate of Chlorophytum comosum (L.) is confirmed both by dynamics of change of results of traditional techniques of an assessment and by informational parameters, that allows to draw a conclusion on possibility of use of information parameters as criterion for assesment of effectiveness of biostimulation
A Removability Result for Holomorphic Functions of Several Complex Variables
Suppose that Ω is a domain of Cn, n > 1, E ⊂ Ω closed in W, the Hausdorff measure H2n-1(E)=0, and f is holomorphic in Ω/E. It is a classical result of Besicovitch that if n = 1 and f is bounded, then f has a unique holomorphic extension to Ω. Using an important result of Federer, Shiffman extended Besicovitch’s result to the general case of arbitrary number of several complex variables, that is, for n > 1. Now we give a related result, replacing the boundedness condition of f by certain integrability conditions of f and of ∂2f/∂z2j, j=1,2,…,n
Factor Analysis to Explore the Indicators of Quality Assurance Mechanism on Higher Educational Institutions in Pakistan
The study aims to gauge the effectiveness of Quality Assurance Mechanism (QAM) and its impact on quality of education in Higher Education Institutions in Pakistan. In this study, a comprehensive survey was conducted, through a well-structured questionnaire, to collect essential data from the respondents. A total of 300 teachers of 5 private and 5 public sector universities were participated in the study. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability value is found to be almost 0.80 for all construct of the instrument in this study. An independent t- test was carried out to reveal the significant difference among private and public sector universities in terms of quality of education. The p-value (significance value) of this test in each construct indicates that there is significant difference among private and public sector universities regarding quality assurance practices. Furthermore, the multivariate statistical tool “Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA)” was used to explore the underlying pattern of the public and private sector universities data. Finally, four factors emerged in the data whose eigen value are greater than one. Factors emerges in public sector universities data represents teacher’s satisfaction and combination of budget allocation and funding while factors that emerges on private sector universities are the combination of globalization, ranking and adequate funding
