Data mining techniques explore critical information in various domains (for example in CRM (customer relationship management), HR (Human Resource), GIS (Geographic Information System) etc.) but most importantly in medical domain. In medical domain, data mining can assist in minimizing the risk of developing some stereotyped diseases such as cancer, heart diseases, diabetes etc. In this paper, authors have focused data of Diabetic patients. Diabetic patient’s body lacks ability to manage the glucose level in blood which can affect the other body mechanism. This can lead to the dysfunctioning of other physiological and psychological parameters such as reduced weight, skin folding. These parameters may be a valuable data source for the research. Diabetes mellitus placed 4th among Noncommunicable diseases-NCDs, caused 1.5 million global deaths each year worldwide [1]. The increase in digital information has elevated numerous challenges especially when it comes to automated content analysis and to make use of some machine learning techniques to aid mankind for predicting the non-communicable diseases like diabetics. . In this research different classifying algorithms such as Naïve bayes, MLP, J.48, ZeroR, Random Forest, and Regression were applied to depict the result. The conducted research aims to extract knowledge from the given set of data and to generate comprehensive and intelligent results

Energy crisis in Pakistan is one of the severe challenges the country is facing today. Electricity is essential part of our daily life and its shortage has severely affected the economy and the other segments of society. This shortfall of electricity is increasing day by day and situation becomes worst especially in summer. The energy crisis are caused due to disproportionate dependence on non-renewable energy resources. The most effective solution that has been found to overcome such crisis is the use of tidal energy, because tidal energy has a significant advantage over many other forms of renewable energy as it is almost perfectly predicted over long time horizons. Therefore, first time an attempt has been made to estimate the tidal energy resources at Jhari creek of Indus Delta, Sindh, Pakistan. For this purpose real time tidal data is acquired from Pakistan Navy and tidal resources are estimated. Potential power density is calculated for the duration of four months May-August 2013 and found that highest potential mean spring power density was observed in June 2013 that was 1.67 W/m2

Nitrogen (N) fertilization at optimum quantity to cultivated plants is essential for sustainable crop productivity. The experiment was conducted to evaluate the response of nitrogen fertilizers on the growth and yield traits of tomato during 2016, at the experimental field of Orchard, | department of Horticulture, Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam. Six nitrogen treatment doses were tested (T1 =control (untreated), T2 = 30 N kg ha-1, T3 = 60 N kg ha-1, T4 = 90 N kg ha-1, T5 = 120 N kg ha-1 and T6 = 150 N kg ha-1.). The data were recorded on the number of branches plant-1, days to flowering, days to fruiting, number of fruits plant-1, weight of single fruit (g), yield plot-1 and yield ha-1 (tons). The results demonstrated that N fertilization showed significant influence on both vegetative and reproductive traits of tomato. On the contrary, plants which were not fertilized with N displayed minimum values for all investigated traits. The highest N level (150 kg ha-1) showed maximum number of branches (5.51) plant-1, minimum day to flowering (42.43) less days to fruiting (46.00), more fruits plant-1 (31.00) maximum weight of single fruit (46.50 g) and highest fruit yield plot-1 (21.01 kg) and per hectare (14008 tons), respectively. It was concluded that the crop growth and productivity was significantly influenced by various levels of nitrogen. However, 150 N kg ha-1 as compared to 120 N and other concentrations considerably displayed better performance in terms of vegetative and reproductive traits of tomato. Hence for optimum growth and economically higher yield, the tomato crop may be fertilized with 150 N kg ha-1

The aim of present study was to ascertain the nutritional properties, phytochemical contents and in vitro antioxidant capacities of two wild edible fruits viz. Aporosa dioica (Roxb.) Muell.-Arg. and Ottelia alismoides (L.) Pers. found in Assam of North-East India. Nutritional properties, phytochemical screening, total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were investigated employing standard methods. Antioxidant properties were assessed following DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2, 2´-Azinobis (3-ethylbenothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt), H2O2 (Hydrogen peroxide) and FRAP (Ferric reducing antioxidant power) assays. The results obtained in this study were presented and discussed. A. dioica fruit extract exhibited lower IC50 (DPPH, ABTS and H2O2) values in contrast to O. alismoides fruit extract indicating stronger antioxidant capacity in A. dioica fruit. Higher FRAP value of 106.583 ± 5.204 ?M trolox equivalent (TE)/g dry extract (DE) was found in the methanol extract of A. dioica fruit compared to that of O. alismoides fruit (44.083 ± 7.637 ?M TE/g DE). The TPC found in the methanol extracts of A. dioica and O. alismoides fruits were 146.710 ± 2.807 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g DE and 93.860 ± 1.172 mg GAE/g DE, respectively, while the TFC was found to be 72.510 ± 8.833 mg quercetin equivalents (QE)/g DE in A. dioica fruit and 43.270 ± 5.361 mg QE/g DE in O. alismoides fruit. These fruits are good sources of nutrients and natural antioxidants and may find applications in formulation of various pharmaceutical drugs

    Get PDF
Considerable research interest has recently focused on the development of both transgenic and traditional breeding methods to increase total and individual carotenoid composition in sweet potatoes. Unfortunately little information is available on the influence of the environment on carotenoid profile stability in sweet potatoes especially growing seasons and storage. Therefore the aim of this study is to explore the composition and concentration of carotenoids in orange sweet potato tubers to enable their future enhancement through genetic manipulation over different growing seasons and storage time. Our findings revealed that orange sweet potato tubers contained α-carotene and β-carotene in the first and second season, whereas in the third season only lutein and zeaxanthin were detected. Analysis of carotenoid profiles of the orange sweet potato tubers grown in three different seasons showed that the growing season had a major effect on the carotenoid compounds stability. Besides growing seasons, the level of total and individual carotenoids in orange sweet potato tuber flesh are strongly influenced and affected by storage conditions. The storage of tubers over 6 months period of time appears to have distinct effects on carotenoid content and composition. Results showed that storage from 1 to 6 months resulted in the accumulation of zeaxanthin and β-carotene with a concomitant decreased of lutein, α-carotene and total carotenoid content

Mindfulness and Nutrition in College Age Students

    No full text
Primary Objective: The obesity rate among young Americans is now almost 25% with higher rates found in minority populations; lack of exercise and poor eating habits are some of the leading causes. The collegiate environment provides a unique opportunity to share nutrition-related knowledge while enhancing students’ awareness, both of which may ultimately lead to changes in health-related behaviors. Mindful eating is associated with a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) and an increased intake of fruits and vegetables. A semester-long nutrition course may result in an increased awareness of eating patterns and may be associated with improvements in dietary intake over time. Methods: Of the 38 students registered for a college-level nutrition course held during an almost four-month-long-semester, 37 self-selected to complete an anonymous Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ) before and after taking the nutrition course; the participants also answered two open-ended questions for qualitative data collection post-test.Results: Of the 37 students 22 were female and 16 male between the ages of 18 and 24; 35 % self-identified as African American, 29% self-identified as white, 22% as self-identified as Latino/Hispanic, 10% self-identified as other and 2% self-identified as Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. No significant change in the MEQ score occurred from pre to post-test; however, there was a trend towards improvement. The students’ answers to open-ended questions regarding any shifts in understanding, approach, or changes in eating habits, revealed overwhelming increases in mindful eating and dietary changesConclusions: A collegiate course taught over a semester is a unique opportunity to introduce nutrition information, emphasizing the connection between nutrition, optimal health, and disease prevention. A student’s exposure to nutrition information while also observing their own eating patterns over time can provide a non-judgmental informed space that allows for the development of a heightened awareness. In turn, the heightened awareness can lead to changes in eating behaviors as evidenced here

Relevance of Autonomic Arousal in the Stress Response in Psychopathology

    No full text
The principal goal of this study is to describe the relevance of typical autonomic patterns of response in accordance to a number of psychopathological syndromes for an accurate multi-dimensional assessment.A sample of 89 subjects was subdivided in five pathological groups in accordance with the clinical diagnosis following the diagnostic criteria of DSM V [1]: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Attack Disorders (PAD), Major Depressive Episodes (MDE), Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD), Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and a Healthy control group. Obtained data were compared in regard to each physiological parameters by using the mean value of the last minute of the registration at rest, and two activation indexes: “stress response” and “recovery after stress”.Furthermore, for each of the physiological parameters (EMG, SCL/SCR, PT and HR), and diagnostic group, mean values in the three different phases (last minute of rest, first minute of stress, last minute of recovery) were compared to evaluate the four physiological parameters trends. In GAD and PAD patients, the obtained Conductance Response mean values are much higher than MDE and OCD.Furthermore, the HR response is also higher in GAD than in the other three groups. So, OCD and MDE patients seem to be characterized by a flat profile in all the parameters. We confirmed that a condition of autonomic hyper activation is typically connected to a high level of tension and anxiety; vice versa, a low level of autonomic activation and the impossibility to react to the stimuli is typically connected to MDE, OCD and AN.Obtained data suggest that there might be a new tool for differential diagnosis in psychopathology, represented by specific and typical pattern in autonomic response
