Conciencia fenoménica y acceso cognitivo
In this paper I present a conception of the consciousness (higher-order monitoring conception of consciousness) that it is frequent in the present philosophical literature according to which the consciousness is thought as a kind of cognitive access to our own mental states. I also present one ofthe most formulated objections to this way of conceiving the consciousness. I refer to the objection according to which this viewpoint leaves out the phenomenal consciousness. I defend the idea that even the phenomenal consciousness involves sorne form of cognitive access and if the distinction of Block between phenomenal consciousness and access consciousness want to be maintained, theses notions must be thought as the two extremes of the same continuum
Escepticismo semántico y teorías del significado
In several works H. Putnam has developed an argument addressed against "realist" semantic theories (in particular, against causal theories of reference ). In this paper I argue that Putnam's argument is weaker than what is generally supposed, as Devitt has shown in Realism and Truth. I disagree, however, with Devitfs latest strategy against model-theoretic arguments as presented in an ''Afterword'' to that book
Cualidades secundarias y autoconocimiento
Self-knowledge as a sort ofknowledge can be justified through two kinds of paradigm: obser\vational and inferential. This paper criticizes both epistemic lines and suggests instead that first-person statements exhibit the samc logical structure as statements about secondary qualities, as proposed by Crispin Wright. The paper introduces a variant to this propasa!: self-deception should not be seen as threatening tht: biconditional that expresses that self-knowledge is constitutive of intentionality. This is the constitutive thesis
La tecnología de la fecundación in vitro y el argumento del potencial
The authors focus on IVF technology to raise profound and disturbing questions about potentiality in the context of ex utero embryo. They explore different meanings of such notion. They suggest that the notion of potential is relatively clear in the context of naturally occuring process of pregnancy. But a laboratory embryo follows no "natural course". It cannot become a person without the deliberate human act to transferring it to a uterus. They also connect the notion of potential with that of "possibility" noticing that the possibilities of becoming a person of an ex utero and an in utero embryo are very different
Sida e investigación: ¿Fin de un paradigma en investigación?
In this paper I analyse changes AIDS brought to research with human beings (FDA's new regulation). One of the issues I consider is the relevance of ethical codes (Nuremberg and Helsinki declaration) to these new proposals in research and ifwe are justified to think this implies a new paradigm in research (protectionism vs. consumerism). I evaluate sorne of the arguments activists of AIDS have done, the relevance of considering informed consent as the only criterium and I give special importance to the benefit-risk evaluation as one of the necessary conditions for research work

El comunitarismo en la bioética: algunas reflexiones
This paper explores the implications for medica! decision-making ofthe communitarian view. The launching point is a sketch and clarification of the communitarian view which l characterize in terms of its fundamental commitment to the relational self. This commitment poses a challenge to much traditional work in bioethics for it asks us to start focusing not on rights and individualistic conceptions of interests and autonomy but on those values needed to sustain communities. I attempt to show that while sorne ofthe communitarian objections to conventional bioethical approaches have brought to the fore aspects of the moral experience that must be taken seriously, the communitarian vision does not succeed in discrediting bioethics "patient-centeredness" rightly understood
De qué manera la medicina le salvó la vida a la ética
In this essay the author relates bioethics to Anglo-Saxcin moral philosophy in the early twentieth century. According to him the direct engagement ofmoral philosophers with concrete cases and issues in medicine and biomedical research helped to rescue ethics from the abstract irrelevance into which much of the field had fallen
