Mortar Design for Conservation. Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years After
MoDeCo2000 project (2020-2022), funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia (PROMIS programme) is focused on the research of Roman mortars on the Serbian part of the Danube Limes. The project aims to study raw materials as well as the technologies of making lime mortars used during the construction works, trying to reveal different aspects of life on the frontier during centuries. The samples refer mostly to the bedding and wall-core mortars but also rendering and flooring mortars from 23 archaeological sites on the right bank of the Danube, which belonged to the provinces of Moesia Superior and Pannonia Inferior during the Roman Empire, and Moesia Prima, Pannonia Secunda, and Dacia Ripensis during Late Antiquity and Early Byzantium, spreading to the period from the 1st to the 6th century. The character of the sampled buildings covers both the military aspect (legionary fortresses, auxiliary forts, and smaller fortifications), and the civilian aspect (baths, villas, palace, basilica, city rampart, and tombs) with the most exceptional of all, the Trajan’s Bridge over the Danube
I summon thee, Thôbarrabau! Magical practice in Viminacium
The times of the Roman Empire, especially
in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, are
characterised by an abundance of artefacts, images,
and texts in different media (metal, papyrus,
mosaics, intaglios), whose function was to protect,
heal or give certain abstract benefits to people who
wore them or kept them in their homes.1 Ancient
Viminacium was no exception in this regard, and
there are numerous pieces of material proof indicating
that the inhabitants of Upper Moesia’s capital
turned to magic in times of trouble and distress

The project, which is being conducted in the period from 2020 to 2022, is financed by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia and implemented by the Institute of Archaeology, the Faculty of Technology in Novi Sad, and the Institute for the Testing of Materials.
The research includes all available archaeological sites and cultural monuments from the Roman period on the territory of the Danube Limes in Serbia, comprising 40 buildings and 117 different mortar samples and many bricks and, stones, as well as local clays and sands
Mortars of the Roman Frontier on the Danube
The mortars have been always one of the most interesting topics for the researchers of Roman building constructions. The knowledge on this complex building material used in Roman architecture is mostly based on the research of the monumental structures in the territory of today Italy. However, many mortar examinations were executed by the researchers of provincial Roman archaeology as well, who tried to find evidence of the quality of building activities in the provinces. The territory of today's Serbia, except for the existence of scarce studies, was never in the research focus. Even the monumental bridge over the Danube, built at the beginning of the 2nd century that made Trajan’s conquest of Dacia possible, was not researched thoroughly enough when we speak of
its building materials. During the last few years, the interest in the Roman buildings at the Danube territory has grown. Mortar Design for Conservation – Danube Roman Frontier 2000 Years after (MoDeCo2000) project is funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia. Its aim is to investigate the mortars used in Roman buildings along the former Danube Limes in Serbia, as well as to offer
mortar recipes for building conservation practice
The FLOW project – a contribution to the study of the cultural transmission of the central Balkan communities and the neighboring regions in later prehistory
The paper presents the basic research principles of the project THE FLOW (Interactions-Transmission-Transformation: Long-distance connections in Copper and Bronze Age of the Central Balkans), which is carried by the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade, Institute of Nuclear Sciences “Vinča, and the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. The theoretical and methodological perspectives of the project research engage an interdisciplinary approach based on analytical techniques incorporated within archaeology and natural sciences such as physics and chemistry. The project's goal is to apply an exact method to the problems of the origin of raw materials for the production of four specific groups of objects made of obsidian, pottery, copper, and bronze. Each of those materials represents a unique problem and requires a specific treatment, presented within this paper, together with the existing practice, analytic techniques, and methodological procedures for the collected samples. Further, the project incorporates the collection of absolute dates through AMS and OSL dating, with the application of the latest OxCal 4.4. calibration. The acquired dates, combined with the disposition of samples and raw materials will serve as a backbone for the creation of spatio-temporal models and the formation of an SQL database, all with a goal to create the interpretative basis for the study of local paleo-economies, long-distance connections, and social networks in the Central Balkans during the Copper and Bronze Age
New results of the excavations of the Imperial Palace in Sirmium
Research of the imperial palace in Sirmium started before the Second World War, while the systematic
character begins with excavations of site 1a. In the last 70 Years parts of economic structures (site 31),
as well as the parts of representative buildings (site 37), were researched. Of the highest importance
was the exploration of the hippodrome (few sites) which further strengthened the interpretation of the
buildings to the south of the hippodrome as imperial palatial complex.
During the last 20 years in the NW part of Sirmium palace systematic excavations had been conducted in
the course of 12 campaigns on the site 85. Architecture from different horizons has been investigated.
One of the main results is the find of polygonal building which could be dated to the period of first
decade of the IV century A.D. Based on the finds from the destruction layer one can assume that it was
used as official building in the center of the imperial palace. Numerous fragments of imperial porphyry
busts, fragments of luxurious architectural decoration, as well as large number of lead seals had been
found in the destruction layer, on top of which new arrangement of structures has been built.
Based on context of finds one can assume that destruction of this building had occurred in the second
half of the IV century. During that period few annexes of the large building to the west had been
established and the space of the previous official building has been converted into open space area. This
reconstruction of the part of the palace could be dated to 8 th decade of the IV century A.D
Despite the presence of a large mountain range, the Balkans, the phenomenon of hilltop fortified sites can only be studied with difficulty in the Lower Danube. For one thing, there is currently no complete inventory of the fortifications found there ; for another, the rest of the territory belongs to the Danubian plain. This paper proposes to review the question by focusing on the
Late Roman province of Dacia Ripensis. It is part of a group of provinces that are less well known because they are the least studied. Only a few sites within its territory have been the subject of planned excavations and in-depth studies, including a very limited number of hilltop fortifications. It was decided not to devote this paper to the establishment and the presentation of a
complete inventory of hilltop constructions in Dacia Ripensis, even if such an approach might afford a certain interest, but rather to focus on the analysis of new settlements in the lower Danubian hinterland and the Christianisation of rural communities, in view of the strategic value of hilltop fortifications. Consideration will be given in particular to larger fortified sites such
as Romuliana, Berkovitsa, Golemanovo Kale, as well as less well-known sites in the regions of Knjazevac (Serbia) and Vratsa (Bulgaria). This analysis will be made in the light of the relationships between imperial power and rural communities, of the role of the Church in the phenomena studied as well as of changes in urban culture
