New Muli-disciplinary Data from the Neolithic in Serbia. The 2019 and 2021 Excavations at Svinjarička Čuka

    Get PDF
The excavations at Svinjarička Čuka in the South Morava Valley in Serbia are presented with new primary data from the field and related material and scientific analyses. Newly recovered architectural remains from the classical Starčevo period revealed a variety of domestic features, so far belonging to an earlier and later occupation phase at the river terrace dating between 5700/5600 and 5500 BC. Details of the stratigraphy and certain materials are presented for selected domestic contexts, including one potential ‘Starčevo house’. Archaeological and scientific analyses are discussed and contextualised within the Neolithisation process in the chapters on new radiocarbon data and their Bayesian modelling, pottery studies, chipped stones and their raw material analyses, grinding kits, animal remains, archaeobotanical results and charcoal analysis. The later occupation at the site is presented with new results for the Middle and Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age, including domestic contexts, radiocarbon data and materials.

Researching Roman Mortars from the Danube Region - Archaeological Perspective of the MoDeCo2000 Project

    Get PDF
Lime mortar is a building material that has been used since the 8th millennium BC. For thousands of years, people used it to make floors or plaster walls, while it was used as structural mortar from the period of the Roman Republic, after the beginning of the 2nd century BC (Artioli, Secco and Addis 2019: 172-173). The addition of pozzolanic materials enabled the development of Roman cement opus cementicium) and the erection of monumental and durable buildings (Adam 2005: 116-156). The first constructions built with lime mortar on the territory of modern-day Serbia appear in the 1st century AD, after the Roman conquest of these areas and their inclusion into the Roman Empire. Historical sources and fresco depictions testify to the manner of preparation and use of lime mortar during Antiquity. However, these sources mainly refer to the territories of modern-day Italy. The only sources for studying the technology of making lime mortar and the use of raw materials in the territory of Moesia Superior and Pannonia Inferior are the physical remains of the buildings built using this material, as well as the remains of the mortar-making process (e.g., lime slacking pits)

Aquae in the De Aedificiis : Territorial and administrative issues in Dacia Ripensis during the 6th century

    No full text
This article explores the debate raised around the soundness of hypothetical structural changes occurred in the administrative organization of the provinces along the Lower Danube during the 6th century. The hypothesis of a gradual shift from a centralized provincial administration towards a city-based governance has been advanced on the basis of the information provided by the fourth book of Procopius' De Aedificiis. The manuscript shows indeed an interesting incoherence in the categorization of the forts and fortified settlements in the region, insofar as when describing the situation of Dacia Ripensis and Dacia Mediterranea it abandons a province-based listing in favor of a city-based organization. This has led different scholars to surmise a progressive increment in autonomy and power of major settlements at the expense of the provincial central authority. This hypothesis, however, presents several issues, which emerge evidently through the comparison of Procopius' work with another relevant source of the time: the Novellae Iustiniani. The ambiguities around the use of the lists in the De Aedificiis as evidence for administrative changes along the Lower Danube will be analyzed within the historical frame provided by the development of the city of Aquae, in Dacia Ripensis

Imported molluscs in the Central Balkans and Southern Carpathian Basin in the Neolithic revisited

    Get PDF
The trade and exchange of marine mollusc shells in the Neolithic and the Eneolithic in Europe is a very interesting topic that attracted attention by many scholars. The phenomenon of Spondylus trade in particular was addressed from different perspectives. However, the entire European region is not researched in an uniform way. In regions such as present-day Bulgaria or Hungary the evidence of marine molluscs is rich and diverse, mainly due to intensive research of cemeteries with rich burial equipment. The archaeological record from the area in between, namely western and central Balkans and the southern Carpathian basin (roughly present-day Serbia and Croatia) is somewhat different; furthermore, it was never systematically studied. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of current evidence regarding the distribution of the imported marine mollusc shells in this region and also to re-analyse earlier hypotheses in the light of the current evidence. Some 40 years ago, it was suggested, after the information available at the time, that only the sites along the Danube took part in the Spondylus trade during the Late Neolithic. However, mollusc shells were present in the area already in the Early Neolithic Starčevo culture, furthermore, they may be found in the Late Neolithic in the entire Balkan area. The main obstacle for the interpretation is inadequate research, but also specific trait of the Neolithic in the area with very few burials discovered. Findings are limited to predominantly discarded, broken and/or lost ornaments from settlements and the quantity of ornaments seems modest in comparison with other parts of Europe. However, current evidence shows that the ornaments from mollusc were highly valued items, and that the central Balkan area was an important trading route through which these ornaments were further distributed throughout the Neolithic period.[https://www.e-a-a.org/eaa2022/] [javascript://[Uploaded files/EAA 2022/EAA 2022 Abstract Book 27 August.pdf]

    Get PDF

The use of space and internal organization of the Late Neolithic settlement at Drenovac, Serbia

    Get PDF
The site of Drenovac in central Serbia has been extensively researched through several projects from the 1970s to present. In recent years, application of geophysical survey significantly changed a course in the investigation of the use of space and spatial patterning. It provided means for targeted excavations and research of specific features – houses, non-domestic buildings, ditches, etc. Comparing different lines of evidence obtained through recent systematic excavations and geophysical surveying, we will present the complex history of the settlement and its internal organization. Drenovac is a large and long-lived settlement inhabited in the Early (6100-5900 BC) and the Late Neolithic (5300- 4700/4500 BC), with thick cultural deposits and complex stratigraphy. Detecting changes in size and internal organization of the settlement during this long occupation proved to be a difficult task. While data on the earlier phases of occupation are still limited, extensive research of the latest building horizon (Vinča-Pločnik phase) provided valuable data for research of the settlement’s spatial organization and architecture. Thus the focus of this presentation will be on this phase. On the macro level, we will discuss the settlement’s size, layout and internal organization. We will evaluate both natural and cultural factors that could affect the specific patterning of different features. On the micro level, we will turn to the individual houses and their immediate surroundings, and make some observations about space division and use

Coin Hoards Dated to the Time of Maximinus I from the Territory of Present-Day Serbia

    Get PDF
There are three known hoards from the territory of present-day Serbia which end with coins of Maximinus I: the Supska II, Ravna and Mehovine hoards. Taking into account the Roman division of the provinces, the hoards from Ravna and Supska (II) originated from the territory of Upper Moesia, while the Mehovine hoard represents a find from this period, deposited in Lower Pannonia. Since the latest pieces in all three hoards are dated broadly from January/autumn AD 236 to the first quarter of AD 238, the reasons for burying the finds may be different: the terror spread by Maximinus’ agents when collecting taxes; the violence of the troops and of the local administration; or a reaction to the news of the rebellions in Africa and in Rome

Compatible Mortars for the Architectural Conservation of the Danube Limes in Serbia – Importance of the Raw Component Characterisation

    Get PDF
Recipes for compatible mortars for conservation must be based on raw materials whose presence was determined during the characterisation of historical mortars used on buildings on which we perform renewal or repairs. Additional materials are often used that improve the resistance of conservation mortars to various influences, while all the time ensuring that they do not have any negative effects on any part of the structure
