Effect of Kolb’s experiential learning theory and model (KELT&M) on learning of fine art and praxis in Uyo secondary schools, Nigeria
The prevalent rate of poor academic performance of secondary school students in Fine Art subject in Uyo, within the context of empirical evidence and government official records, is very high. This has become great concern to Art Educators. The reason for this poor performance has been attributed to lack of specific learning theories and models for Fine Art instructions and the ineffectiveness of conventional expository instructional strategy among other variables. Against this background, this paper examines the academic relevance of the concrete-abstract-continuum concept of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory and Model (KELT&M) to learning and praxis of Fine Art at secondary level of education. Based on the assumption that by integrating Kolb’s theory into the artistic process, a new paradigm in Art Education might evolve, having potency of stimulating greater cognitive, psychomotive and emotive development among students, the study adopts a non-randomized pre-test, post-test, control group quasi- experimental design. In order to test the efficacy of Kolb’s theory and model on learning and praxis of Fine Art in secondary schools, two groups; experimental and control, are exposed to the same instructional treatment. The study reveals that students in the experimental group performed better than those in the control group
An Instructional Package for the Development of Leadership Skills and Ethical Values among Youths in Post Basic Schools
The youths are a nation’s future manpower; the productivity and advancement of any nation depend heavily on the attitude and values they imbibe. The inculcation of desirable values and attitudes in our youths is both an informal and formal process. The Federal Government of Nigeria has made various efforts to provide formal training for Nigerian youths on social and civic values and leadership skills. However, there is a gap in these formal training attempts. Ethical value orientation is being included in the Basic Education and Civic Education in the tertiary level, but in the Post Basic Education where the youths are at their most vulnerable stage, there is no formal structure to assist them in learning the proper values. This instructional package is designed to fill this gap. The package consists of an instructional module, a teacher’s guide and some resources to accompany the training. The module is a simplified training course on positive ethical value orientation and good leadership skills to be used alongside the normal school curriculum in the second year of Post Basic Education. The course applies Instructional System Design to training for behavioral skills acquisition and attitudinal chang
Mediated Instruction and Redundancy Mediation
The study was on Mediated Instruction and Redundancy Remediation in sciences in secondary schools in Uyo urban. Two hypotheses were postulated. A survey and quasi-experimental designs were adopted in the study. A total of 200 students were selected from two secondary schools purposively sampled for the study. 50 students each were used as experimental and control groups in the two schools selected. A computer designed instruction on circulatory system developed on power point projection was used in treating the experimental group, while the expository pedagogical strategy was used to teach the control groups on the same lesson. A fifteen item structures questionnaire developed on a four point rating scale was used to elicit information on availability of ICT facilities in schools and their influence on redundancy remediated during science lessons. Equally redundancy remediation achievement test (RRAT) was developed to test the ability levels of students in both the experimental and control groups. The questionnaire had a reliability coefficient of .72 while the ‘RRAT’ had .85 respectively. The data were analyzed using t-test statistics. The result of the analysis revealed that use of mediated instruction significantly removed redundancy for science students also the use of mediated instruction influenced academic achievement of science students in secondary schools. Some recommendations were made to encourage the teaching and learning of science subjects in secondary schools. Some of the recommendations include that science teachers should be trained to use ICT facilities in order to integrate it into the teaching learning situation and also that Internet facilities should be provided in all schools to ensure its utilization by both science teachers and students
Synergistic and antagonistic effects between halide ions and carboxymethyl cellulose for the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in sulphuric acid solution
The corrosion and corrosion inhibition effect of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) for mild steel in sulphuric acid medium was investigated using chemical (weight loss and hydrogen evolution) techniques at 30–60 C. The effect of addition of halide ions (Cl-, Br -, and I-) was also studied. It was found that CMC functions as an inhibitor for acid induced corrosion for mild steel. Inhibition efficiency increases with increase in immersion time but decreases with increase in temperature. Addition of halide ions reveals that chloride ions (Cl-) antagonize the inhibition process whereas iodide ions (I-) exert synergistic effect on the corrosion inhibition by CMC. Corrosion inhibitive effect was afforded by adsorption of CMC molecules onto the mild steel surface both in the absence and presence of halide ions which was found to follow Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The phenomenon of physical adsorption is proposed from decrease in inhibition efficiency with increase in temperature. The inhibition mechanism was further corroborated by the values of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters obtained from the experimental data.

Instructional design model utilization for behaviour change amongst JSS classes using innovative video-linked clips
It is widely accepted that the end of education is to bring about change in behaviour. In recent times, rather sadly, many print media reporters and social critics submit that the level of social decadence amongst young school leavers within and outside Nigeria is alarmingly significant. This means that the methods, models and utilization strategies in lesson delivery have not produced the desired performance expected of the products. This paper projects that for the realization of the goals of social studies in good citizenship education, teachers in JSS classes must decide on what models, instructional media and utilization strategies they wish to adopt in teaching/learning from youth. To achieve this aim, researchers designed an instructional model for behavior change to complement teacher-made video linked comments in teaching social studies because visuals generally depict various phases of complex processes in great detail. To achieve the objectives of the study therefore, 500 JSS I social studies students and all the 62 social studies teachers in all public schools in Uyo L. G. A. constituted the study sample. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated and tested using the mean, simple percentage, ANOVA, chi-square statistics and t-test. The result revealed an overall significant effect, performance and change of attitude in JSS I students. The study therefore, recommended amongst other factors the use of teacher-made video linked clips along with accompanied model for behaviour change to realize desired objectives of good citizenship education
Correlation between body mass index, gender, age, family history and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria
Objective: To study the relationship between body mass index (BMI), gender, age, family history and incidence of diabetes mellitus.
Methods: A total of 445 human subjects volunteered to participate in this study. They were divided into two groups, the test group (diabetics) containing 224 subjects and the control (nondiabetics) containing 221 subjects. Samples (blood and urine) were collected from the subjects on their normal diabetic clinic visit for check-up. The family history and other related data of subjects were obtained from their hospital case note and through the research questionnaire. Analysis was done to determine the blood sugar concentration in both groups. Their weight, height, waist circumference, mid-arm circumference and hip circumference were measured to determine their BMI.
Results: The mean age was significant (P 40 kg/m2. The diabetics had a higher BMI than the control subjects in all the BMI ranges used (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001) except those in the 30–39 kg/m2 BMI range. The diabetics had significantly higher fasting and random blood sugar concentration (P < 0.01) than the nondiabetics. The result on family history showed that 42.5% of the diabetics had no idea of the history of diabetes in their family, 32.14% had first degree relatives with diabetes, and 25% of them had no family history of diabetics.
Conclusions: BMI, female gender, advancing age and positive family history were all directly correlated with the incidence of diabetes mellitus.

Effect of ethanolic extract of leaf of azadirachta indica on some hematological parameters in albino wister rats
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ethanolic extract of the leaf of Azadirachta indica on haematological indices of rats. Twenty four adult male rats (weighing between 100 and 120g) were randomly but equally divided into four groups of six rats per group. Rats in group I (control) were administered with 10ml/kg of distilled water while rats in groups2 to 4 were respectively administered with the extract of A. indica orally at the dose levels of 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 300mg/kg, once daily for 14 days. On the 15th day post administration, rats of all the groups were sacrificed and their blood samples were collected through cardiac puncture into EDTA sample bottles for haematological analysis. The results showed that PCV, Hb, RBC counts were non-significantly increased in all the experimental groups compared to control, indicating that extract of A. Indica caused non-significant increase in the PCV, Hb and RBC counts. The mean white blood cell and platelet counts were significantly decreased in group3 compared to control. The mean lymphocyte values increased while the mean neutrophil values decreased in all the experimental groups compared to control. The mean values of MCH, MCHC and MCV were similar between experimental groups and the control. Therefore, in conclusion low dose of ethanolic Azadirachta indica causes increase in the cellular components of blood but higher doses may result in decrease of some or all of these blood parameters.

The Rhetoric of Globalization and Communication Education in Nigeria: Issues, Prospects and Challenges
This paper attempts an assessment of the various conceptual projections for the evaluation of the supposed derivations of globalization. The many scholastic discourses and some obviously identifiable fallacies are measured from rhetorical standpoint. The dictates of globalization suggest that every nation needs to participate in the global market. Only the nation with adequate manpower and communication expertise can comfortably participate, otherwise it would be left behind. The baseline is the restructuring of not only the socio-economic actualities, but communication education, especially ICTs in our tertiary institutions and the secondary education leve
