    Architecture of the Framework Supporting Data Monetisation - Building Blocks to Foster Data Sharing in Agriculture Domain

In particular in the agriculture domain there is lack of the data sharing culture, related to luck of the trust in sharing of the data, transparency of the data usage, data security issues, and data ownership issues. We are presenting the approach to address some of the challenges of the data monetisation that can be applied in the agriculture domain. We are describing the architecture of the framework supporting data monetisation, that aims to provide the building blocks to foster data sharing. This effort is work in progress within DATAMITE, an EU funded initiative under the Horizon Europe program.Peer reviewe

    Robotized 3D Scanning and Alignment Method for Dimensional Qualification of Big Parts Printed by Material Extrusion

    Publisher Copyright: © 2024 by the authors.Moulds for aeronautical applications must fulfil highly demanding requirements, including the geometrical tolerances before and after curing cycles at high temperatures and pressures. The growing availability of thermoplastic materials printed by material extrusion systems requires research to verify the geometrical accuracy after three-dimensional printing processes to assess whether the part can meet the required geometry through milling processes. In this sense, the application of automated techniques to assess quick and reliable measurements is an open point under this promising technology. This work investigates the integration of a 3D vision system using a structured-light 3D scanner, placed onto an industrial robot in an eye-in-hand configuration and synchronized by a computer. The complete system validates an in-house algorithm, which inspects the whole reconstructed part, acquiring several views from different poses, and makes the alignment with the theoretical model of the geometry of big parts manufactured by 3D printing. Moreover, the automation of the validation process for the manufactured parts using contactless detection of the offset-printed material can be used to define milling strategies to achieve the geometric qualifications. The algorithm was tested using several parts printed by the material extrusion of a thermoplastic material based on black polyamide 6 reinforced with short carbon fibres. The complete inspection process was performed in 38 s in the three studied cases. The results assure that more than 95.50% of the evaluated points of each reconstructed point cloud differed by more than one millimetre from the theoretical model.Peer reviewe

All rights reserved.Sustainable Development Goal number 12, ‘Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns’, establishes the objective of sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources by the year 2030 and substantial reductions of waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse. In this context, the recycling of waste from the steel and iron-making industry for use as raw material in the construction industry is addressed in the present work. In doing so, in addition to recycling waste that might otherwise be dumped, the consumption of natural raw materials is reduced. With these aims in sight, several mortars are designed, seeking to achieve different strengths, with the partial substitution of natural components for by-products from the steel making industry. Fresh and hardened mortar properties were tested. The main use of the mortars was for structural rehabilitation works, so special attention was placed on the bond between fresh mortars and hardened substrate. Achieving dosages with high bonding strengths figured among the main challenges of this work in which very encouraging results were obtained.Peer reviewe

    Blockchain-Based Random Selection Among a Private Number of Candidates

However, some contexts, such as sensitive ecosystems like healthcare or education, also require an additional degree of privacy by avoiding information leakage about the number of candidates for the selection. Despite this, existing literature lacks comprehensive solutions that maintain this privacy while upholding transparency and fairness. To address this gap, the study proposes a platform that combines blockchain and Homomorphic Encryption. The main contributions include a detailed definition of the architecture and the operational procedures, and an in-depth exploration of the proposed Random Number Generator function. The study introduces a homomorphic approach for confidentially computing candidate counts and explores methods for homomorphically constraining random numbers within a private range. By combining blockchain and Homomorphic Encryption, this research offers a robust solution for transparent and fair random selection while maintaining the number of candidates private.Peer reviewe

All rights reserved.In the mid-nineteenth century, inventive entrepreneurs (among others, Lambot, Wilkinson, and Monier) took the first steps towards the production of Reinforced Concrete (RC) on an industrial scale. Nowadays, RC is used in over 80% (160×106) of buildings within the EU27, 25% of which were built before 1960 (in Bilbao, for example, 80% were built before the 1970s). The situation calls for sustainable and fully compatible strengthening solutions, especially where RC structures (some considered as built heritage) are now deteriorating and in need of repair. In this paper, novel composite solutions based on inorganic matrixes (i.e., cement mortars, as with RC) reinforced with a technical textile core made of different synthetic fibres (steel, basalt, carbon and glass, respectively) are used. The composite, known as Textile Reinforced Mortar (TRM), developed a round the turn of the century for restoring masonry heritage structures, is tested here for two purposes: material characterization (mortar and textiles), and the strengthening of medium-size RC beams under flexural loading. All the experimental results are discussed, in order to balance the opportunities for future applications where the inorganic TRM matrixes (cement and aggregates)can be partially substituted by two kinds of steel-making slags (EAFS-black and LFS-white), so asto convert them into types of eco-inorganic matrices and co-products within a circular economy.Peer reviewe

The research aims to find correlations through AI models between process parameters and the geometry of the additive layer. By implementing machine learning algorithms, complex relationships are explored, linking factors such as deposition speed, temperature, and other process parameters to the geometric characteristics of the deposited layers. This approach optimizes the quality and efficiency of additive manufacturing by precisely understanding how adjustments in process parameters impact the final structure. Promising results indicate that AI plays a crucial role in the continuous improvement of DED processes, paving the way for a more efficient and precise additive manufacturing.Peer reviewe

    The role of strategic planning in Nature- based Solutions (NBS) transformation: An evaluation of the Green Cities Framework in mainstreaming NBS in 6 European countries

    Publisher Copyright: © 2024 The Author(s)Urban areas are currently experiencing a number of adverse effects associated with both climate induced change and the nature of development processes. This has led to, not only a reduction in the provision and performance of environmental attributes but has also generated threats to the well-being of urban inhabitants. In response, the concept of Nature- based Solutions (NBS) has emerged as a means of reconfiguring spatial interactions to maximize adaptation and resilience. Despite this however, the process of transition for NBS has frequently encountered several governance related challenges. This paper examines the extent to which the Green Cities Framework (GCF) can overcome these limitations and aid NBS mainstreaming. Through policy-based experimentation in six European Cities we assess the ability of the GCF to deliver improved NBS capacity and innovation. The research revealed positive strategic planning improvements in all cities studied. Particular areas of strength included improvements to NBS visioning, working group collaboration, climate impact and vulnerability assessment, integration with existing planning instruments and processes, business model development and post-decision evaluation. Several areas of potential improvement were also revealed. These were primarily associated with difficulties in communicating with all relevant actors, concerns with undertaking financial assessments and defining NBS standards for procurement.Peer reviewe

    Exploring The Impact Of Cost-Effective Surface Treatments On The Roughness and Geometry Of FFF Sintered Parts

These finishes, whether due to tolerances or surface quality, are often challenging to achieve through additive manufacturing technologies, necessitating additional post-processing. This study aims to investigate the effect of specific surface treatments on parts produced through Sintering Based Additive Manufacturing (SBAM), such as Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). With the premise of employing affordable post-processing methods that can potentially maintain competitive prices for the parts, the study analyzes the post-processing techniques of shot blasting and vibratory polishing on parts with different geometries. Additionally, the study examines the effect of surface treatments on part walls manufactured at various angles. The results obtained demonstrate significant improvements in surface roughness, although there is potential for them to modify the geometry and round the edges of the parts.Peer reviewe

    Layer-resolved vector magnetometry using generalized magneto-optical ellipsometry

    Publisher Copyright: © 2024 Author(s).We demonstrate the ability of a single magneto-optical reflection experiment to achieve layer-resolved vector magnetometry in multilayer films. For this purpose, we designed, fabricated, and measured a set of epitaxial ferromagnetic/non-magnetic/ferromagnetic heterostructure multilayer samples that exhibit in-plane uniaxial anisotropy and a tunable ferromagnetic interlayer coupling strength through the non-magnetic interlayer. By means of generalized magneto-optical ellipsometry measurements, we obtain the magnetization angles of the two different ferromagnetic layers independently as a function of the applied field. Hereby, we observe that the magnetization switching of one layer can trigger a discontinuous shift of the magnetization angle in the second layer if ferromagnetic interlayer coupling is present. Moreover, we reproduce the obtained behavior using a model of two coupled macrospins, which corroborates even the unexpected aspects of our experimental results and thus reinforces the sensitivity and reliability of our experimental layer-resolved vector magnetometry.Peer reviewe
