Improving reading comprehension using digital stories for Filipino students: A literature review

This study investigates the use of digital storytelling as a tool to enhance reading comprehension among Filipino learners in the early grades. Despite the cultural richness of storytelling in the Philippines, many Grade 1 and 2 students struggle with understanding Filipino texts, even when they can read fluently. Observations and previous studies reveal that comprehension gaps are common, often worsened by limited vocabulary, low parental involvement, and the challenges of modular learning during the pandemic. Rooted in the need to make reading more meaningful and engaging, this study explores how digital storytelling—combining visuals, audio, and narration—can bridge traditional narrative practices with modern learning preferences. Grounded in both observation and literature, the research aims to assess the impact of multimedia-based storytelling on students’ comprehension and engagement. The findings are expected to provide insights into how technology can support inclusive and culturally relevant reading instruction in Filipino classrooms

Phenomenological descriptive qualitative method was used to gather the strategies and classroom management practices of teachers. It also used NVivo to find the main ideas that came up in structured interviews with ten teachers from Aring Elementary School in Badoc, Ilocos Norte. The study revealed that the main reasons people don't go to school are health problems, family problems, lack of interest, money problems, and bad school environments. In response, teachers used professional development, open communication with parents, extra support sessions, positive reinforcement, and working with community leaders. The study gave schools and politicians important information on how to help students who don't want to learn in a way that includes everyone in the community. It also talked a lot about how important it is for teachers to be able to choose how to deal with students who don't show up

This research examined the significance of value education in promoting social and emotional learning (SEL) within secondary schools in Marcos. The objective was to analyze how educators incorporate values education into their instructional methods and the obstacles they encounter in this process. Employing a qualitative research approach, data was collected through semi-structured interviews with teachers from three secondary institutions in Marcos. Thematic analysis indicated that values such as empathy, respect, responsibility, and kindness play a crucial role in enhancing students’ emotional regulation, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills. Nevertheless, educators reported various challenges in executing values education, including limited time, inadequate resources, and lack of training in SEL techniques. Despite these challenges, teachers exhibited flexibility and dedication, discovering innovative methods to weave values education into their curricula. The results imply that while values education is essential for the emotional and social growth of students, schools must offer increased support, resources, and professional development to improve the efficacy of SEL initiatives. This research adds to the expanding literature on SEL, highlighting its critical role in developing well-rounded students who are prepared to handle the complexities of contemporary society

Assessing students’ learning difficulties and strategies: Basis for developing instructional support materials

Despite growing advocacy for inclusive education, few empirically validated instructional materials exist to support secondary learners with learning difficulties, particularly within localized curriculum contexts. Addressing this gap, the study developed instructional support materials to assist teachers in delivering responsive and inclusive instruction. Specifically, it determined the profile of learners with learning difficulties and identified the best teaching practices employed by teachers in inclusive classrooms. Guided by a Research and Development (R&D) design, the study involved 303 identified secondary learners, 20 teachers, and 10 expert validators from public secondary schools in the Schools Division of Ilocos Norte. Data were gathered through validated survey questionnaires, structured interviews, and expert validation tools, and analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, weighted means, and thematic analysis. Results revealed that learners exhibited diverse manifestations of learning difficulties, particularly in reading comprehension, writing mechanics, and numeracy skills. Teachers implemented differentiated instruction, scaffolding, multisensory approaches, and structured routines; however, collaboration with parents and specialists remained limited. The developed materials, anchored on the Activate–Acquire–Apply–Assess framework and aligned with the K to 12 Transition Curriculum for Learners with Disabilities, were rated very highly valid and acceptable. Therefore, the materials are recommended for institutional adoption to strengthen inclusive classroom practices and promote equitable learning outcomes
