Symbiotic interactions are more common than we
thought a few years ago. What were considered a simple
cohabitation of multicellular organisms with commensal
microorganisms are often true associations with reciprocal
benefits and with multiple signal exchanges between
partners. Nowadays, the rise of metagenomics and cellular
biology allows a more detailed analysis of these interactions.
The interaction between leguminous plants and Sinorhizo-
bium, which helps them to fix nitrogen from the atmo-
sphere, has been the most studied model of symbiosis at the
molecular level. Numerous other symbioses are currently
being studied. The aim of the colloquium ‘‘Symbiosis and
cohabitation’’, which was held on 25 April 2017 in the
‘‘grande salle des séances’’ of the Institut de France, Paris,
was to review our knowledge in the matter, mainly on the
new models of interaction, and to improve our understand-
ing of signal mechanisms. Examples focused on bacteria–
algae or other sea organisms symbiotic associations, as well
as bacteria–insect, and also bacteria–human or bacteria–
laboratory animals symbiosis. They illustrated how symbi-
otic interactions between microbiota and colonized orga-
nisms play a part in their biology, immunity system
development, and pathogen response. Implications of these
discoveries, in terms of human or animal health protection,
plant production and environment protection, have been
discussed by the speakers. Five papers by participants in this
colloquium have been collected and are included in this
issue of Comptes rendus Biologies.
