    Giant memory window performance and low power consumption of hexagonal boron nitride monolayer atomristor

    Two-dimensional (2D) monolayers have gained significant attention as ultrathin active layers for fabricating atomic-scale memristor (atomristor) structures due to their crystalline structures and clean surfaces. This study reports on the giant memory window performance and low power consumption of the atomristor structures using a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayer and symmetric silver (Ag) metal electrodes through a polypropylene carbonate (PPC) assisted transfer method. The h-BN atomristor exhibits the highest memory window (~4 × 109), the lowest leakage current (~0.24 pA), and the lowest power consumption (~3 × 10−14 W) compared to the other 2D atomristors. Furthermore, the h-BN atomristor achieves significant endurances and yields of up to 10,000 switching cycles and 77%, respectively, due to the superior thermomechanical properties of the PPC support layer for transferring ultrathin and large-area h-BN monolayers. These results represent a significant step toward the realization of high-performance and energy-efficient neuromorphic computing circuits based on 2D monolayers.Center for Dynamics and Control of Material

    As metaphor theory has bloomed into a prominent way of exploring musical experiences in recent decades, music theorists have primarily adopted either a cognitive approach centered on how we map non-musical concepts onto musical ones or, less often, a poetic one that considers how musical meaning emerges through the concatenation of innumerable metaphors into a culturally-inflected metaphoric discourse. Furthermore, work on musical metaphors has shown a nearly uniform focus on repertoires that emphasize the syntactical organization of pitch and time, commensurate with a focus on metaphors—principally that of musical motion—that conceptualize syntactic events and processes in those repertoires. This dissertation takes aim at both of these shortcomings by proposing a network-based model for musical metaphors that integrates their grounding in cognitive processes and physical experience with their creative and hermeneutic function, and by applying this model to a new metaphoric discourse that developed in the latter half of the twentieth century in order to examine how new discourses form out of established ones. The discourse under consideration here treats sound as a material substance whose physical features are detected through perceptual processes and which can be manipulated in all the ways that physical objects can be, and is especially prominent in the conceptualization of music of the European avant-garde of the late twentieth century that eschews syntax in favor of the statistical arrangement of all parameters. Using the sound mass music of György Ligeti and the early spectral compositions of Gérard Grisey to explore this discourse, I propose that longstanding metaphorical mappings between physical or haptic experience and musical constructs establish a virtual environment populated with virtual objects, and that as musical events unfold they are rendered as embodied interactions between the listener, objects, and environments, leading to increasingly creative and specific musical experiences gathered under the umbrella of an emergent material discourse that responds to and displaces the challenge this music poses to metaphoric modes of thought such as that of musical motion.Musi

    How bilinguals manage increased cognitive load in their non-dominant language

    Speech disfluencies serve as key indicators of underlying cognitive processes and offer valuable insights for enhancing speech recognition systems. In this thesis, we introduce a meticulously curated dataset comprising annotated transcripts and labeled disfluency events, collected from over 20 hours of recorded speech involving both monolingual and bilingual speakers. Our analysis provides the first large-scale validation of a bilingual cognitive fatigue phenomenon, demonstrating that this effect is consistent across the two spoken languages of bilingual individuals. Specifically, our findings reveal that after articulating a lexically complex word, bilingual speakers frequently produce a disfluency—such as a filled pause or a self-repair—followed by a phonetically simpler word. This pattern appears to function as a cognitive strategy, potentially allowing speakers to regain fluency and momentum during speech production. The consistency of this pattern across languages suggests an underlying universal mechanism in bilingual cognitive processing. Finally, we explore the implications of these discoveries for clinical practice. By uncovering distinct bilingual cognitive strategies as manifested through disfluency patterns, our research provides speech pathologists with a novel perspective on the cognitive demands faced by bilingual speakers.     Secure multi-programming for quantum computers

    Despite advances in classical computing, some problems remain intractable. Quantum computing is an emerging paradigm that can accelerate many such applications, and redefine what is considered "computable". By leveraging quantum mechanics to encode and manipulate information, quantum computers promise to solve many important problems in healthcare, material science, weather prediction, finance, etc. However, attaining quantum advantage for practical applications face significant hurdles - most notably, the gap between user demand and hardware availability. Existing quantum service providers allocate systems to a single at a time sequentially, even if their program would under-utilize the hardware, worsening the supply-demand gap. Multi-programming bridges this disparity by co-locating multiple users to improve hardware utilization and throughput. However, simultaneous gate-operations introduce noise due to a phenomenon known as "crosstalk", a problem that exacerbates in multi-programming where several programs run in parallel. In fact, this vulnerability can be exploited by adversarial users to manipulate the output of co-located programs, threatening the security of multi-programmed quantum systems.Electrical and Computer Engineerin

    Controlling Gene Expression in a Gut Symbiont of Honey Bees to Improve Microbiome Engineering Methods for Protecting Pollinator Health

    Pollination by the Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) is important for many agricultural crops and native plants. Honey bee colonies in North America have recently faced high overwintering losses, and multiple pathogens and environmental factors threaten their health. Currently, synthetic biology tools are being developed for studying and engineering bee gut microbes to open new avenues for protecting bee health. Snodgrassella alvi wkB2 is a core bee gut microbe that robustly colonizes the ileum of the gut. S. alvi have been engineered to produce double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) from plasmids to induce the honey bee RNA interference response to protect bees against viruses and parasites. However, the expression of certain RNAs and proteins can be burdensome to S. alvi, resulting in decreased cell growth and/or severely limited engineered functionality. Controlling gene expression using an inducible promoter system would reduce this burden, improving engineering efficiency. I created six plasmids with a broad-host-range origin of replication and different inducible promoter systems controlling expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) and tested induction with various concentrations of inducer molecules, first in E. coli, and then in S. alvi. The vanillate-inducible pVan/VanR system had the greatest dynamic range in S. alvi. DNA constructs for constitutive expression of T7 RNA polymerase, for increased dsRNA production, and Flp recombinase, for genome editing, have previously been observed to be burdensome and unstable in bacterial cells, making them opportune candidates for inducible control. I applied the pVan/VanR inducible system to Flp recombinase and showed that this made it possible to use it for genome modification in S. alvi cells. Current work involves testing dsRNA production using the inducible T7 RNA polymerase system, and future work will include testing these systems in situ, within the honey bee gut.Molecular Bioscience

    Mothers’ poor health negatively affects their children's educational outcomes

    Maternal health significantly influences children's educational outcomes, yet it often remains an overlooked factor. In this brief, PRC faculty scholar Shannon Cavanagh and colleagues analyze Add Health data to investigate the link between maternal health and college graduation for their children. They found that young adults are less likely to graduate from college if their mothers experienced poor health during their upbringing. This association is particularly pronounced among children of college-educated mothers, suggesting that maternal illness can disrupt the advantages typically conferred by higher parental education. These findings underscore the importance of considering maternal health in discussions about educational equity and suggest that supporting mothers' well-being could have long-term benefits for their children's academic success.Population Research Cente

    American Women and the Journey to Citizenship

    This work evaluates the historical progression of the citizenship status of American women to determine if and when the demographic achieved the full spectrum of associated rights and obligations. Using a timeline constructed from legislation, relevant milestones in women’s history, and appellate interpretations of the constitution, this project assesses significant developments in women’s citizenship status. It proposes a framework of evaluation for citizenship using the criteria of political rights, economic rights, independent legal status, social duties, and equitable access to government. Upon assessment, it concludes that currently only three out of the five metrics of citizenship established have been obtained by American women. While the demographic has obtained full political rights, economic rights, and independent legal status, it has not attained social duties and equitable access to government. Furthermore, this thesis identifies two major holdouts within the criteria that preclude women from achieving full citizenship, namely, intermediate scrutiny and selective service. Overarchingly, this thesis develops a method of assessing citizenship, applies it to American women, and determines the demographic has not met the required qualifications in the present day.Humanitie

    The intersections of agricultural capital, state violence and prison gangs in the Salinas Valley

    The Salinas Valley has been a historically significant site of agricultural innovation and labor activism. Contemporarily, Salinas Valley faces rising violence, recording between twenty to forty homicides a year since 2011. This report examines the historic, socioeconomic conditions that enable rampant violence in this rural area by analyzing the intersections of violence, incarceration, and capitalist agriculture as they play out through a four billion dollar a year agribusiness in the historic carceral spaces of Salinas Valley.American Studie
