François Gault was a star of unequaled brilliance in
Europe's intellectual firmament whose 85th birthday we
celebrated in 2016; we welcome the opportunity of paying
homage. Hewas the founder of the Laboratories of Catalysis
of Caen (1960) and Strasbourg (1971).
François Gault, an outstanding French scientist, mentor
to many generations of French chemists, was born on
January 7, 1931 in Nancy; he died on August 4, 1979 after he
wrote a fascinating symphony of organic chemistry and
catalysis. Over the course of his career, he has been
acknowledged as a leading researcher in the field of catal-
ysis and organic chemistry. François Gault was a brilliant,
creative, visionary, enthusiastic scholar, and a warm and
thoughtful husband, father, colleague, and friend. François
Gault had a most gracious personality, courteous, and
charming. He has remained friend of J.-M. Lehn, G. Our-
isson, J. A. Osborn, M. Boudart, C. Kembal, R. L. Burwell, K. I.
Tamaru, K. Tanabe, G. C. Bond, G. A. Somorjai, Z. Paal, V. A.
Kazansky, L. Guczi, J. R. Anderson, J. J. Rooney, P. Wells, A.
Frennet, W. M. H. Sachtler, V. Ponec, J.-E. Germain, R.
Maurel, J. Barbier, G. Leclercq, F. Gautier, and so on. This is
not an exhaustive list.
He used to work quite a lot, leaving the laboratory
around midnight or later. His reflection was always very
fast and his scientific knowledge was very impressive.
When a doctorate student was asked to discuss the scien-
tific results in his office, it was always a great moment for
him as he was always learning something new; it was very
rewarding. He was a very good teacher.
He was interested in the study of the catalytic mecha-
nisms of hydrocarbons using isotope tracing (13C and D2).
He was the first to demonstrate the isomerization of al-
kanes on platinum metal films. François Gault was a
perfectionist; the development of his researches followed
the same trend than the analytical progresses, and hehttps://doi.org/10.1016/j.crci.2018.01.007

possible data quality. Hewas a forerunner in his field, as the
use of labeled molecules demonstrated, to better under-
stand the catalytic mechanisms of hydrocarbons rear-
rangement. Each article is the culmination of a detailed
study on a current topic in heterogeneous catalysis. These
articles highlight a number of fundamental aspects of
modern heterogeneous catalysis, surface phase behavior,
adsorption and reaction properties, and particle size effects
on chemical reactions.
In recognition of his work and his personality, the Eu-
ropean Federation of Catalysis Societies has founded, in his
honor, the François Gault Lectureship Award. The award is
given every 2 years to a distinguished scientist as Europe's
highest honor in the field of catalysis. The François Gault
Lectureship is the most prestigious distinction that a catal-
ysis scientist can receive from a European organization.
This thematic issue contains a diverse collection of ar-
ticles that highlight the latest development in catalysis. It
contains both review and research articles in this bur-
geoning field. This issue is based on articles presented by
the winners of the François Gault Lectureship Award, the
former students, colleagues, and friends of Gault. We thank
all authors for the time and effort involved in preparing
these articles. We also thank all of the reviewers who took
time out of their demanding schedules to referee the arti-
cles in a timely manner.
We express our warm thanks to Mrs. Fatima Messadi,
Mrs. Marie-Christine Brissot, andMr. Jean-Michel Blengino,
who coordinated the handling and collecting of the man-
uscripts with a high degree of professionalism. We
sincerely thank all the editors of Comptes rendus Chimie

Solvents play an important role in a large number of
operation units in chemistry and chemical engineering.
They are widely used in manufacturing processes such as
perfume, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food ingredients, nu-
traceutical, biofuel, or fine chemical industries, as well as
for synthesis, extraction, purification, formulation, or syn-
thetic processes. Recent trends in green chemistry have
largely focused on finding solutions that minimize the use
of solvents or finding alternatives to (toxic) petroleum-
based solvents. This must be achieved while also enabling
process intensification and the development of cost-
effective production of high-quality extracts.
The objective of the 2017 Workshop on alternative sol-
vents was to provide a complete overview of the state of
the art in alternative and green solvents used at the labo-
ratory and industrial scales for extraction, purification,
formulation of natural products, and for synthesis. A special
emphasis was dedicated to innovative and original
methods and procedures, alternative solvents, and safer
products. The two days' workshop gathered more than 150
participants: professionals from industry, researchers and
lecturers from academia engaged in biobased product
chemistry, and graduate students. More than 20 plenary
lectures given by internationally renowned experts from
academia and industry involved in the synthesis or use of
green alternatives to conventional solvents were pre-
sented. A poster session also offered the possibility to
present the latest developments from young researchers
and Ph.D. students. In addition, a stimulating round-table
chaired by experts both from industry and academia
allowed a thorough discussion aiming at identifying the
drivers and locks that promote or limit the implementation

academia and industry for the advancement of research in
the field of ‘‘alternative solvents’’ by connecting scientific
experts and industries within and across disciplines (syn-
thesis, extraction, formulation, and purification) from
around the world in the vibrant capital of the gastronomy,
Lyon, France. WAS 2017 participants received a copy of the
book The Little Prince by the well-known writer Antoine de
Saint-Exupery and also enjoyed a gala dinner aboard a
Bateau-Mouche.
Avant-propos
Les solvants jouent un rôle important dans un grand
nombre d'operations unitaires en chimie et en genie des
procedes. Ils sont utilises pour les procedes d'extraction, de
synthese, de purification ou de formulation de principes
actifs dans l'industrie cosmetique, la parfumerie, l'agro-
alimentaire, la pharmacie ou la valorisation de la biomasse.
L'utilisation des solvants petroliers est de plus en plus
souvent montree du doigt pour son impact negatif et sa
participation a la pollution environnementale et a l'effet de
serre.
Cette journee thematique sur les solvants alternatifs
pour la synthese, l'extraction, la purification, la synthese et
la formulation a permis aux acteurs du domaine d'entrer
dans leur revolution « verte », en operant une mutation
vers des solvants alternatifs issus de la biomasse. Plus de
150 chercheurs, representant plus de 15 pays, venant du
milieu industriel (50%) mais aussi academique (50%), ont
participe a cette deuxieme rencontre sur les solvants
alternatifs (WAS 2017) dans la capitale de la gastronomie,
Lyon, France. Il leur a ete remis un exemplaire du livre
d’Antoine de Saint-Exupery Le Petit Prince. Il leur a aussi ete
