Le 17 avril 2009, a été organisée à Reims (France) une
contre préliminaire pour discuter de la création d’un
eau européen qui unirait les groupes travaillant dans
érents domaines de recherche liés aux glycolipides.
Nous sommes heureux d’annoncer la naissance de ce
eau de collaboration : « Bébé GLEN » est né ce jour-là.
ci le rapport d’activité le plus récent. . .
Différents collègues européens ont été contactés dans
poir de former ce réseau européen. Les membres locaux
sents au premier séminaire ont présenté leur recherche
liaison directe ou indirecte avec les glycolipides. Un
sensus général a été trouvé en faveur de la création d’un
eau européen sur les Glycolipides, qui a été nommé
N (pour GlycoLipid European Network).
Les points suivants peuvent être mis en avant :
 liste des laboratoires européens ayant déclaré leur
térêt pour la création de ce réseau a été présentée. Les
ifférents domaines de recherche (modélisation molé-
laire, chimie et biologie) sont présents ;
n « volcan » (voir page de couverture) résumant les
ifférentes parties de GLEN aide à comprendre comment
us ces domaines sont reliés (biologie animale et
égétale, tests d’activité biologique, caractérisation,
istallographie, extraction et purification, modélisation,
nthèse) ;
ne version basique d’un site web GLEN existe (http://
len.univ-reims.fr). Toutes les informations concernant
s membres du réseau, avec des publications significa-
ves (reliées aux glycolipides), et éventuellement
es projets à court ou long terme sont constamment
joutés ;
s événements principaux qui ont déjà été réalisés sont :
des rencontres pour l’organisation et le management
du réseau GLEN,
un séminaire en avril 2009, réunissant les chercheurs
rémois pour des présentations succinctes de leurs
sujets de recherche,

A preliminary meeting on April 17th 2009 in Reims
(France) was organized to discuss the creation of an
European Network which would unite groups working in
the different fields of Glycolipid research.
We are pleased to announce the birth of our collabora-
tive network: ‘‘Baby GLEN’’ was born this day. Here is the
latest progress report. . .
European colleagues have been contacted in the hope
of forming this glycolipid network. Local members
present at the first meeting then presented their direct
or indirect research on glycolipids. A general consensus
was reached in favor of the creation of a European
glycolipid Network which was named GLEN (GlycoLipid
European Network). The following points can be men-
tioned:
 The list of the european laboratories having declared
their interest in the creation of this network was
presented. Various research fields (molecular modeling,
chemistry and biology) are present;
 A ‘‘volcano’’ (see cover of this issue) summarizing the
different parts of GLEN helps to show how everything is
joined together (animal and vegetal biology, biological
activity tests, characterization, crystallography, extrac-
tion and purification, modeling, synthesis);
 A basic version of the GLEN website exists (http://
glen.univ-reims.fr). All information concerning network
members, with significant papers (related to glycolipids),
and eventually short or long-term general projects are
progressively included;
 Main events have been finalised:
 meetings for general GLEN business and organization,
 a seminar in April 2009, with all Reims researchers to
give a short presentation of their research subjects,
 the first European Glycolipid Congress with 63
participants (from seven countries) including 19
speakers (November 2010);

63 participants (venant de sept pays), incluant 19
conférenciers (novembre 2010) ;
 à la lumière du nombre croissant de groupes intéressés
pour participer à GLEN, la création d’un réseau d’excel-
lence a été suggérée. La taille de ce réseau peut varier
d’une « petite échelle » à une « grande échelle ».
Nous espérons que ce premier livre sur GLEN est la
preuve de notre investissement dans cet effort collaboratif
et productif dans le monde de la recherche sur les
glycolipides.
Cordialement et « Glenement » vôtre.
 In light of the increasing number of groups interested in
participating in GLEN, the creation of a Network of
Excellence is suggested. Its size can vary from a ‘‘Small
Scale’’ to a ‘‘Large Scale’’.
We hope that this first GLEN’s book is a proof of our
commitment to the creation of a productive collaborative
effort in the area of glycolipid research.
