Observer les faits, dégager les lois, les retrouver en
orant une théorie, puis se livrer à partir de là à des
dictions qui seront vérifiées expérimentalement, tel est
développement d’une démarche scientifique bien
prise et bien construite. Cette succession d’étapes
ge esprit de finesse et esprit de géométrie, elle s’appuie
 l’imagination et sur l’intuition. La chimie n’échappe pas
ette progression. Même si l’ensemble du processus ne
t être le fait d’un seul, même si la confrontation des
es et des observations reste fructueuse, même si l’erreur
t parfois glissée en cours de route, même si les
agonismes scientifiques ont pu freiner le développe-
nt, les progrès scientifiques avancent inexorablement
 la curiosité des hommes est sans limite. Les premiers
 d’une chimie empirique et d’une philosophie cher-
nt à percer les mystères du pourquoi datent de la plus
te antiquité. L’alchimie et ses philosophes, le passage
la médecine par les plantes à la médecine par les

ssance de l’industrie avant que tout soit expliqué, la
ssance de la théorie atomique sont autant d’éléments
 font partie de l’histoire de la chimie. Le domaine est
ense et il renferme bien d’autres choses : l’histoire des
ervations et des applications à une industrie naissante
roche de l’artisanat, l’histoire de l’évolution des idées et
leur mûrissement sont autant de sujets qui fascinent,
is qui sont rarement enseignés. Certains d’entre eux ont
abordés le 19 janvier 2012 au cours d’une journée de
férences organisée par l’Académie des sciences ; ils font
jet de ce numéro thématique des Comptes Rendus
sacré à l’histoire de la chimie.
Foreword
The observation of facts, the finding of laws, the
building up of a theory leading to those laws, then the
prediction of new facts to be checked experimentally, are
the normal steps of any scientific development. This
sequence requires shrewdness of mind and reasoning,
imagination and intuition. Chemistry makes progress that
way. Going forward is not a one person contribution,
putting together ideas and observations is always fruitful,
scientific controversies may slow down the development;
nevertheless, science is going on because the curiosity of
scientists is without limit. The first steps of empirical
chemistry and of a philosophy trying to understand
mysteries of nature are found in antiquity. Alchemy and
its philosophers, the move from medicinal plants to
synthetic drugs, the industry born from the needs of
mankind before the complete understanding of chemical
reactions, the birth of atomic theory are all of them parts of
the history of chemistry. It includes many other things: the
history of observations to be applied to an industry so close
to craftsmen, the history of ideas are fascinating topics
rarely taught. The French Academy of Sciences organized a
one-day symposium on this topic on 19th January 2012.
The texts of conferences are published in this special issue
of the Comptes Rendus of the French Academy of Sciences.
