Cosmetopoeia
La cosmetopeeForeword
With the recent development of green technologies, the
use of renewable raw materials plays a central role in the
reduction of the contribution of processes incompatible
with the rules of sustainable development. Thus plants,
owing to their ability to produce a wide variety of mole-
cules, have in recent decades motivated a growing interest
in research on cosmetics. However, the use of plants is far
from being a novelty and since ancient times, humans have
used plants either for food, health or well-being, using
chemistry to extract active ingredients. If there has long
been a pharmacopoeia that lists plants for therapeutic use,
studies in the field of traditional cosmetics are still not
named in the writings. The concept of cosmetopoeia has
therefore been currently developed to fill this gap. Unlike
pharmacopoeia, as a standardized and codified catalog of
the use of plants for medicinal purposes, cosmetopoeia
would register the use of plants for body care and well-
being. In this sense, cosmetopoeia represents an impor-
tant part of the common history that unites humans and
their environment, and aims at a better knowledge of
traditional uses of plants for cosmetic purposes, but also at
valorizing and preserving them while respecting biodiver-
sity and sharing. Thus, the development of the concept of
cosmetopoeia impulses a new momentum for the knowl-
edge, conservation and promotion of this green gold that
“phytodiversity” represents as a cultural and biological
heritage in an equitable and sustainable way.
Through this thematic issue dedicated to cosmetopoeia,
a few non-exhaustive and concrete examples of contribu-
tions to this field are presented.Avant-propos
Aujourd'hui, avec le developpement recent des tech-
nologies vertes, l'utilisation de matieres premieres renou-
velables occupe un rôle central, et est en passe de reduire la
contribution de procedes peu compatibles avec les regles
du developpement durable. Ainsi, les plantes, de par leur
capacite a produire une tres grande variete de molecules,http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.crci.2016.08.001

(http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/).ont-elles, durant ces dernieres decennies, suscite un interêt
grandissant pour la recherche en cosmetique. Cependant,
l'usage des plantes est loin d’être une nouveaute, et de tout
temps les hommes les ont utilisees, que ce soit pour leur
alimentation, leur sante ou leur bien-être, faisant appel,
parfois même sans le savoir, a la chimie pour en extraire les
principes actifs. S'il existe depuis fort longtemps une
pharmacopee qui recense les plantes a usage therapeu-
tique, les travaux dans le domaine de la cosmetique tradi-
tionnelle sont encore peu recenses dans des ecrits. Le
concept de cosmetopee est aujourd'hui developpe pour
combler cette lacune. Ainsi, a l'image de la pharmacopee,
registre normalise et codifie de l'usage des plantes a des
fins medicinales, la cosmetopee serait le registre de l'usage
des plantes pour le soin du corps et son bien-être. La
cosmetopee represente, en ce sens, un pan important de
l'histoire commune qui unit les hommes a leur environ-
nement, et ambitionne une meilleure connaissance des
usages traditionnels des plantes a visee cosmetique en vue
de les preserver, d'en optimiser la valorisation dans le
respect de la biodiversite et du partage. Le developpement
du concept de cosmetopee impulse une dynamique nou-
velle en faveur de la connaissance, de la conservation et de
la valorisation, de maniere equitable et durable, de cet
or vert que represente la « phyto-diversite » en tant que
patrimoine culturel et biologique de l'humanite.
Au travers de ce numero thematique consacre a la
cosmetopee, quelques exemples non exhaustifs de contri-
butions concretes a ce domaine sont presentes.
