Foreword
Progress in high-social-impact fields, such as energy, transport or health, strongly depend on the development of new 
solutions of materials with improved structural or functional properties. The optimisation of metallurgical processes, classical 
or innovative, is and will remain highly strategic and competitive. The challenge of improvements or even breakthroughs 
with respect to traditional metallurgy faces an additional difficulty with the increasing need to take also into account 
environment and resource (energy and raw material) management issues. The strategy to develop metallic alloys with 
improved properties consists mostly in exploring new combinations of chemical composition and microstructure, relying on 
new processes but also with the help of predictive modelling and simulation approaches.
In this framework, the present dossier is aimed at providing an overview of the recent advances related to metallurgy 
and, more specifically, to metallic alloys. The issue is organized around eight review papers that cover a broad spectrum 
of metallic materials and associated applications. Authors from both academic and high-technology industrial sectors were 
invited to contribute. Among the latter, participations of ArcelorMittal on advanced steels for automotive applications, Con-
stellium on the metallurgy of aluminium alloys, and ONERA on high-temperature materials for aerospace applications are 
particularly valuable and attest to the importance of the materials solution in the industrial context. A brief introduction of 
each contribution is given below.
New developments of advanced high-strength steels for automotive applications, by Jean-Hubert Schmitt and Thierry Iung. This 
paper provides an overview of the evolutions over the past decades of the different generations of advanced high-strength 
steels. The article emphasizes the impact of both the chemical design and the controlled processes on the mechanical 
properties of such materials. Microstructures, hardening mechanisms and processes are detailed along the generations, from 
the classical dual phase material to the last third generation of steel grades based on unstable austenite.
High-temperature materials for aerospace applications: Ni-based superalloys and γ-TiAl alloys, by Mikael Perrut, Pierre Caron, 
Marc Thomas, and Alain Couret. In this article, two essential families of key industrial materials used for aerospace applica-
tions are reviewed. In both cases, the historical evolutions are explained and the key metallurgical parameters involved in 
their optimization (chemical design, deformation mechanisms, environmental effects...) are described.
Recent advances in the metallurgy of aluminium alloys. Part I: Solidification and casting, by Philippe Jarry and Michel Rappaz. 
The goal of this review paper is to summarize the recent advances in the metallurgy of the transformation of aluminium
alloys from the liquid to the solid state. All scales are concerned: from that of atom cluster arrangements in the melt leading 
to a renewed understanding of nucleation and phase selection to the variability of dendritic growth morphology anisotropy, 
up to fluid flow at the scale of the melt pool of the concerned casting processes and the corresponding macrosegregation 
phenomena. These advances point out that it is necessary to account for the strong and complex coupling between physical 
phenomena at different scales to correctly describe the formation of solidification structures.
Recent advances in the metallurgy of aluminum alloys. Part II: Age hardening, by Christophe Sigli, Frédéric De Geuser, Alexis 
Deschamps, Joël Lépinoux, and Michel Perez. This paper focuses on the solid phase of aluminium alloys and more specifically 
on recent progress on the understanding and simulation of age hardening. The main phenomena governing the formation of 
precipitate microstructures in aluminium alloys are presented; they provide a qualitative understanding of the relationship 
between alloy chemistry, processing and final precipitate microstructure at the nanoscale. Modelling approaches are shown 
to be capable of predicting these microstructures. The mechanisms for precipitation strengthening are also discussed, as 
well as the models available to quantify this strengthening.
Design of strain-transformable titanium alloys, by Philippe Castany, Thierry Gloriant, Fan Sun, and Frédéric Prima. This 
paper deals with the design and the properties of new titanium alloys for aerospace and biomedical applications. These 
materials offer interesting properties due to stress-induced transformations of the metastable β body centred cubic phase 
and the appearance of TRIP/TWIP effects, or of superelasticity for some well-designed compositions. Some strategies to 
obtain superelastic titanium alloys are exposed, and details on the deformation mechanisms of such materials are given. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.crhy.2018.11.008

design TRIP/TWIP titanium alloys with enhanced properties due to the formation of complex microstructures.
From high-entropy alloys to complex concentrated alloys, by Stéphane Gorsse, Jean-Philippe Couzinié, and Daniel B. Miracle. 
Based on a recent breakthrough alloying design, high-entropy alloys, and by extension complex concentrated alloys, are 
considered as new materials offering the possibility to explore central parts of phase diagrams and revisit the notion of 
“alloys”. This is a very active research field, with a continuous growth since its beginning in 2004. The article exposes the 
main accomplishments on their design, microstructures, and mechanical properties, and highlights some of the associated 
numerous challenges.
Combinatorial approaches for the design of metallic alloys, by Alexis Deschamps, Franck Tancret, Imed-Eddine Benrabah, 
Frédéric De Geuser, and Hugo P. Van Landeghem. The design of new metallic alloys is faced with the challenge of an in-
creasing complexity of the alloys composition, processing and resulting microstructures necessary to meet multiple property 
targets, together with a requirement that the design stage be faster and less expensive. This paper shows that combinatorial 
methods, combining numerical and experimental approaches, can be applied to the specific requirements of alloy design 
and lead to an improved understanding of fundamental processes of physical metallurgy, such as precipitation, together 
with improved alloy compositions and processing.
Emerging processes for metallurgical coatings and thin films, by Alain Billard, Francis Maury, Pascal Aubry, Fanny Balbaud-
Célérier, Benjamin Bernard, Fernando Lomello, Hicham Maskrot, Erick Meillot, Alexandre Michau, and Frédéric Schuster. 
Surface coatings provide wear, corrosion, chemical, electrical, optical, or cosmetic properties that may exceed those possible 
for the base material surface. This paper illustrates potential vectors of process innovation in the field of metallurgical coat-
ing through several examples: physical vapour deposition, chemical vapour deposition, plasma spraying, cold spraying, and 
laser cladding.
The guest editors of this dossier on new trends in metallic alloys, Jean-Philippe Couzinié and François Willaime, would like 
to express their gratitude to Denis Gratias for giving them the opportunity to prepare it. They also gratefully acknowledge 
all the authors of the articles in this issue as well as the reviewers.
Avant-propos
Les défis à fort impact sociétal associés à l’énergie, le transport ou la santé dépendent fortement du développement de 
nouvelles solutions de matériaux à propriétés structurales ou fonctionnelles avancées. L’optimisation des procédés métallur-
giques, traditionnels ou innovants, est et restera hautement stratégique et concurrentielle. Les défis qui se posent quant à 
l’amélioration, voire aux ruptures, par rapport à la métallurgie traditionnelle font face à une difficulté supplémentaire liée à 
la nécessité croissante de prendre en compte des aspects environnementaux et d’économie de ressources en énergie et en 
matière première. La stratégie de développement de matériaux métalliques à propriétés améliorées passe par l’exploration 
de nouvelles combinaisons de compositions chimiques et de microstructures, en se basant sur de nouveaux procédés, mais 
aussi avec l’aide d’approches de modélisation et simulation prédictives.
Dans ce cadre, ce dossier des Comptes rendus Physique a pour but de donner une vue d’ensemble des récentes avancées 
dans le domaine de la métallurgie et, de façon plus spécifique, des alliages métalliques (massifs et revêtements). Le numéro 
est organisé autour de huit articles de revue qui couvrent un large spectre de matériaux métalliques et d’applications. Nous 
avons souhaité inclure des contributions de partenaires, à la fois académiques et industriels, issus de secteurs de pointe. Les 
participations d’ArcelorMittal sur les aciers avancés pour les applications automobiles, de Constellium sur la métallurgie des 
alliages d’aluminium et de l’Onera sur les matériaux à haute température pour applications aérospatiales méritent d’être 
soulignées et attestent l’importance des solutions de matériaux dans le contexte industriel. Une brève introduction à chaque 
contribution est donnée ci-après.
Nouveaux développements dans le domaine des aciers de nouvelle génération à haute résistance pour les applications automobiles, 
par Jean-Hubert Schmitt et Thierry Iung. Cette contribution donne un aperçu des évolutions au cours des dernières décennies 
des différentes générations d’aciers à haute résistance. L’article met en avant à la fois l’impact de la composition des alliages 
et celui des procédés sur les propriétés mécaniques de ces matériaux. Les microstructures, les mécanismes de durcissement 
et les procédés sont détaillés tout au long des générations, de l’acier à double phase jusqu’à la troisième génération d’aciers 
basés sur l’austénite instable.
Matériaux haute température pour applications aéronautiques : superalliages base Ni et alliages TiAl, par Mikael Perrut, Pierre 
Caron, Marc Thomas et Alain Couret. Dans cet article, deux familles d’alliages industriels essentielles pour les applications 
aéronautiques sont passées en revue. Dans les deux cas, l’évolution historique de ces familles d’alliages est expliquée, avec 
une attention particulière portée sur la description des paramètres métallurgiques clés impliqués dans leur optimisation : 
conception, mécanismes de déformation, effets d’environnement.
Développements récents en métallurgie des alliages d’aluminium. Première partie : coulée et solidification, par Philippe Jarry et 
Michel Rappaz. Le but de cet article est de résumer les avancées récentes dans la métallurgie de la transformation des 
alliages d’aluminium de l’état liquide à l’état solide. Toutes les échelles sont concernées : des amas d’atomes dans le bain 
liquide, qui permettent de porter un nouveau regard sur la compréhension des phénomènes de germination et de sélection 
des phases, à la variabilité de l’anisotropie de la morphologie de croissance des dendrites, jusqu’à l’écoulement du liquide

mettent en évidence la nécessaire prise en compte des couplages forts entre phénomènes physiques à différentes échelles 
pour décrire correctement la formation des structures de solidification.
Développements récents en métallurgie des alliages d’aluminium. Deuxième partie : durcissement par revenu, par Christophe 
Sigli, Frédéric De Geuser, Alexis Deschamps, Joël Lépinoux et Michel Perez. Cet article examine quelques progrès en matière 
de compréhension et de simulation du durcissement par revenu des alliages d’aluminium. Les principaux phénomènes 
régissant la formation des microstructures de précipitation sont présentés. Ils fournissent une compréhension qualitative de 
la relation entre la composition de l’alliage, le traitement thermique et la taille des précipités à l’échelle nanométrique. Les 
approches de modélisation se montrent capables de prédire de telles microstructures. Les mécanismes de durcissement par 
précipitation sont également discutés, ainsi que les modèles disponibles pour les quantifier.
Conception d’alliages de titane transformable par déformation, par Philippe Castany, Thierry Gloriant, Fan Sun et Frédéric 
Prima. Cet article porte sur la conception et les propriétés de nouveaux alliages de titane pour des applications aérospatiales 
et biomédicales. Ces matériaux offrent d’intéressantes propriétés dues à des transformations induites sous la contrainte 
de la phase β métastable de structure cubique centrée, avec l’apparition d’effets TRIP/TWIP ou de superélasticité dans le 
cas de compositions soigneusement conçues. La première partie du manuscrit expose les stratégies d’obtention d’alliages 
superélastiques et donne des détails sur les mécanismes de déformation de tels matériaux. Les moyens d’améliorer la 
superélasticité sont abordés à la fin de cette section. La deuxième partie examine l’approche visant à la conception d’alliages 
de titane TRIP/TWIP à microstructure complexe et à propriétés avancées, principalement à l’aide de diagrammes Bo–Md. 
Quelques faits marquants sont détaillés, et des perspectives d’avenir sont avancées.
Des alliages à haute entropie aux alliages concentrés complexes, par Stéphane Gorsse, Jean-Philippe Couzinié et Daniel B. 
Miracle. Basés sur un concept d’alliage en rupture, les alliages à haute entropie de mélange et, par extension, les alliages 
concentrés complexes sont considérés comme de nouveaux matériaux offrant la possibilité d’explorer les parties centrales 
méconnues des diagrammes de phases et de revisiter la notion d’alliage. Le domaine est très attractif dans la communauté et 
en pleine expansion depuis quatorze ans. L’article expose les principaux accomplissements obtenus sur ces nouveaux alliages 
métalliques (conception, microstructures, propriétés mécaniques. . .) et détaille de nombreux nouveaux défis à relever dans 
le domaine.
Approches combinatoires pour la conception d’alliages métalliques, par Alexis Deschamps, Franck Tancret, Imed-Eddine Ben-
rabah, Frédéric De Geuser et Hugo P. Van Landeghem. La conception de nouveaux alliages métalliques est confrontée au 
défi d’une complexité de leur composition, des procédés et des microstructures résultantes, nécessaires pour répondre aux 
multiples propriétés cibles, le tout avec l’exigence d’une étape de conception rapide et peu couteuse. Cet article montre 
que les méthodes combinatoires, associant des approches numériques et expérimentales, peuvent être appliquées aux exi-
gences spécifiques de la conception d’alliage, et conduire à une meilleure compréhension des processus fondamentaux de la 
métallurgie physique, tels que la précipitation, ainsi qu’à des compositions et des traitements d’alliages améliorés.
Procédés émergents de revêtements métallurgiques et de films minces, par Alain Billard, Francis Maury, Pascal Aubry, Fanny

innovants dans le domaine des revêtements métallurgiques, à travers quelques exemples : dépôt physique en phase vapeur, 
dépôt chimique en phase vapeur, projection plasma, projection à froid et rechargement laser.
