On May 18, 2021, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2022 the International Year of
Glass, highlighting the role of glass in scientific, economic, artistic and cultural fields. Glass is
essential to many vital technologies, facilitates the transition to a more sustainable world and
beautifies our lives. Everyone is familiar with the everyday life glass that has accompanied
mankind for over 10,000 years, such as the first cut obsidian, or more recently, the first Roman
glass blown over 2000 years ago. For the man on the street, glass is present in tableware, bottles
for perfumery, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, cookware, food packaging, flat glass for windows,
mirrors and solar panels, as well as glass wool, fiberglass, glass for optics and photonics, and
others special glass. Glass can be recycled ad infinitum, and there is ample evidence that it was
recycled as far back as Roman times. Tomorrow’s glass will make it possible to rebuild the human
body using bioglass [1], and to store energy in new batteries with almost infinite capacities [2].
In a recent issue of CR Géosciences, a series of articles showed that it is possible to obtain a
glass with all types of atoms and chemical bonds [3]. But the question remains, “What is glass?”.
As early as the 1920s, some physicists proposed that glass could be the fourth state of mat-
ter [4]. Glass would be neither liquid nor solid, but would share certain properties of both, in
a fixed disorder that could be relaxed. In the 50s and 60s, numerous theories emerged, ranging

from rigid sphere theories [5, 6], to free volumes [7, 8], or as Adam and Gibbs [9] proposed on
the idea that matter transport in a viscous liquid requires a cooperative change in the liquid’s
configuration. From the early 1980’s, more rigorous statistical physics approaches were applied
to spin glasses (disordered magnets) and glasses, and together with sophisticated experimental
tools have greatly improved our current understanding of the glassy state of matter.
In this special issue of CR Physique, 11 articles will attempt to discuss these fundamental
efforts to understand the glassy state, which were honored in 2021 by the award of the Nobel
Prize in Physics to Giorgio Parisi, who showed “how disorder and fluctuations interact from
atomic to planetary scales” [10]. The first two articles deal with glass and the concept of glass
transition [11, 12]. The third article shows how to understand the glass transition through
numerical simulations [13]. After defining a certain disorder in glass, Tanguy’s article [14] makes
the link between structure and its vibrations and the thermal capacities of glasses, which show
major differences from those of crystals. Articles by Rouxel and Tyukodi et al. [15, 16] point out
the mechanical properties of glass, which are very different from those of crystals and liquids.
Micoulaut’s article [17] shows that there are several levels of order or disorder in a glass. The next
two articles focus on a new glass family with remarkable mechanical properties: metallic glasses
(Champion, Cornet and Ruta [18, 19]). As we have already mentioned, it is possible to obtain
glasses with all atoms and all chemical bonds, especially the weak bonds that enabled Angell
to introduce the concept of strong and fragile liquids [20]; the article by Alba-Simionesco [21]
focuses on organic glasses, while the article by Cormier et al. [22] shows us that the glasses
we use every day are not as homogeneous as we had hoped, and that they exhibit nanoscale
heterogeneities that can play an important role in macroscopic properties [23, 24].

Le 18 mai 2021, l’Assemblée générale des Nations unies a déclaré 2022 Année internationale
du verre, soulignant le rôle du verre dans les domaines scientifique, économique, artistique et
culturel. Le verre est essentiel à de nombreuses technologies vitales, facilite la transition vers un
monde plus durable et embellit notre vie.
Tout le monde connaît le verre de la vie quotidienne qui accompagne l’humanité depuis plus
de 10 000 ans, comme la première obsidienne taillée ou, plus récemment, le premier verre romain
soufflé il y a plus de 2000 ans. Pour l’homme de la rue, le verre est présent dans la vaisselle, les
flacons pour la parfumerie, les cosmétiques et les produits pharmaceutiques, les ustensiles de
cuisine, les emballages alimentaires, le verre plat pour les fenêtres, les miroirs et les panneaux
solaires, ainsi que la laine de verre, la fibre de verre, le verre pour l’optique et la photonique, et
d’autres verres spéciaux. Le verre peut être recyclé à l’infini, et il existe de nombreuses preuves
qu’il était déjà recyclé à l’époque romaine. Le verre de demain permettra de reconstruire le corps
humain avec des bioverres [1], et de stocker l’énergie dans de nouvelles batteries aux capacités
quasi infinies [2].
Dans un récent numéro de CR Géosciences, une série d’articles a montré qu’il est possible
d’obtenir un verre avec tous les types d’atomes et de liaisons chimiques [3]. Mais la question
demeure : “Qu’est-ce que le verre ?”.
Dès les années 1920, certains physiciens ont proposé que le verre puisse être le quatrième état
de la matière [4]. Le verre ne serait ni liquide ni solide, mais partagerait certaines propriétés des
deux, dans un désordre fixe qui peut se relaxer. Dans les années 50 et 60, de nombreuses théo-
ries ont vu le jour, allant des théories des sphères rigides [5, 6] à celle des volumes libres [7, 8],
ou comme l’ont proposé Adam et Gibbs [9] sur l’idée que le transport de matière dans un liquide
visqueux nécessite un changement coopératif de la configuration du liquide. Depuis le début
des années 1980, des approches de physique statistique plus rigoureuses ont été appliquées aux

verres de spin (aimants désordonnés) et aux verres, et, avec des outils expérimentaux sophisti-
qués, ont considérablement amélioré notre compréhension actuelle de l’état vitreux de la ma-
tière.
Dans ce numéro spécial de CR Physique, 11 articles tenteront de discuter de ces efforts fon-
damentaux pour comprendre l’état vitreux, qui ont été honorés en 2021 par l’attribution du prix
Nobel de physique à Giorgio Parisi, qui a montré “comment le désordre et les fluctuations in-
teragissent de l’échelle atomique à l’échelle planétaire” [10]. Les deux premiers articles traitent
du verre et du concept de transition vitreuse [11, 12]. Le troisième article montre comment com-
prendre la transition vitreuse grâce à des simulations numériques [13]. Après avoir défini un cer-
tain désordre dans le verre, l’article de Tanguy [14] fait le lien entre la structure et ses vibrations
et les capacités thermiques des verres, qui présentent des différences importantes avec celles des
cristaux. Les articles de Rouxel et de Tyukodi et al. [15,16] mettent en évidence les propriétés mé-
caniques du verre, très différentes de celles des cristaux et des liquides. L’article de Micoulaut [17]
montre qu’il existe plusieurs niveaux d’ordre ou de désordre dans un verre. Les deux articles sui-
vants portent sur une nouvelle famille de verre aux propriétés mécaniques remarquables : les
verres métalliques (Champion, Cornet et Ruta [18, 19]). Comme nous l’avons déjà mentionné, il
est possible d’obtenir des verres avec tous les atomes et toutes les liaisons chimiques, notamment
les liaisons faibles qui ont permis à Angell d’introduire le concept de liquides forts et fragiles [20] ;
l’article d’Alba-Simionesco [21] se focalise sur les verres organiques, tandis que l’article de Cor-
mier et al. [22] nous montre que les verres que nous utilisons tous les jours ne sont pas aussi ho-
mogènes que nous l’espérions, et qu’ils présentent des hétérogénéités à l’échelle nanométrique
qui peuvent jouer un rôle important dans les propriétés macroscopiques [23, 24].
