A new species of Dravidogecko (Squamata: Gekkonidae) from the under-surveyed Periyar Plateau of the Southern Western Ghats in Peninsular India
We describe a new species of Dravidogecko from the poorly-inventoried Periyar Plateau of Southern Western Ghats, Peninsular India. The new species Dravidogecko beddomei sp. nov. is characterized by: precloacal-femoral pores 46‒52; scales across belly 31‒33; supralabials 9–11; infralabials 8–9; lamellae on digit IV of pes 10–11. Additionally, the new species is divergent (>13%) from its related congeners. Like its congeners, the new species is currently known only from its type locality and its vicinity – the Devar Malai, Kakki Reservoir – and Sivagiri Hills in the Periyar Plateau of Southern Western Ghats. This discovery further increases the list of new reptiles described from this under-studied massif in the Southern Western Ghats
The Lower Cretaceous Yamama Formation is well-known as one of the main carbonate oil reservoirs for many of the southern Iraq oilfields. However, its depositional environment has so far been poorly described using palynological techniques. Palynological assemblages from the Lower Cretaceous Yamama Formation in southern Iraq contain variable proportions of non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs). Although this is the first record of such assemblages from the Cretaceous of Iraq, they appear very diverse and comprise microforaminiferal linings, arthropod cuticles, Botryococcus Kützing, 1849, dinoflagellate cysts, fungal remains, Leiosphaeridia Eisenack, 1958, and Palambages Wetzel, 1961. Palynofacies analyses reveal that samples are generally dominated by AOM and most of them contain smaller quantities of translucent phytoclasts and charcoal. These records, in addition to previous studies, suggest that deposition of the studied strata of the Yamama Formation took place under anoxic conditions in the inner to outer neritic zone in a relatively near-shore setting, as shown by significant terrestrial input.</p
Cyanobacteria are a lineage of Eubacteria that have long captured the attention of scientists. Approximately 5310 species of cyanobacteria have been hitherto described and new species are continually being found, named and described according to established rules. The correct determination of cyanobacteria strains concerns new biotechnological applications as well as ecological studies. There are many situations where it is crucial to recognise distinct algae species, however methods for doing so vary greatly. The aim of this review is to summarize the state of the art of the main and most recent molecular studies focusing on the phylum Cyanobacteria, with particular attention to the most frequently used gene markers. For a long time, the classification method used for cyanobacteria as well as traditionally described species was mainly based on morphology. Over time, integrative taxonomy, which involves the inclusion of many characters and comprehensive taxa sampling, has become the rule as it provides a better resolution of species relationships. For a better resolution of the phylogenies of the phylum Cyanobacteria, it is usually necessary to focus on different genetic markers: from the most common, like the 16S and 23S rRNA, ITS, rbcLXS and rpoC genes, to genes not so widely used, such as hetR, psbA, tufA, gyp and cpcBA. Also, the highly repetitive sequences often used for the symbiotic cyanobacteria represent an important factor in the inference of the phylogenetic relationships.</p
Taxonomic history and review of the Förster genera of Platygastridae (Hymenoptera: Platygastroidea)
Platygastridae is a ʻdark taxonʼ, with many genera and species in dire need of professional attention. The taxonomic impediment is especially severe in the Palearctic Platygastrinae due to the abundance of names with vague concepts. Historical descriptions and their associated type material must be examined and clarified before further revisionary work can occur. Arnold Förster described 18 genera of Platygastridae, most of which represent distinct and recognizable lineages. The present study reviews their taxonomic history, providing diagnostic remarks, English translations, and illustrations of important specimens from the Förster collection in the Natural History Museum Vienna. The collection also includes original exemplar specimens of European species whose types have been lost. Neotypes and lectotypes are designated from this material to improve nomenclatural stability in the group. Neotypes are designated for Amblyaspis forticornis (Nees, 1834), Isocybus grandis (Nees, 1834), Platygaster striolata Nees, 1834, and Trichacis tristis (Nees, 1834). Lectotypes are designated for Leptacis spinigera (Nees, 1834) comb. nov. and for Platygaster corvina Förster, 1861, with Platygaster henkvlugi Buhl, 1996 treated as a junior synonym. Platygaster mutica Nees, 1834 stat. rev., nomen dubium, is transferred from Synopeas.</p
The Ensifera are famous for the diversity of their acoustic devices and have been intensively studied for their acoustic behaviour and evolution. They sing mostly by scrapping their forewings against each other. Their apparatus includes a stridulatory file and several broad areas that may play as sound resonators, which homology has been harshly debated. Most previous studies focussed on the functional parts, while the whole forewing venation has been less studied in a comparative context. Here, we extend recent observations with 3D-microtomography to study the venation of the forewing of both modern and fossil Ensifera, focussing more specifically on true crickets (Grylloidea Laicharting, 1781), mole crickets (Gryllotalpidae Leach, 1815) and their fossil allies (†Baissogryllidae Gorochov, 1985, †Protogryllidae Zeuner, 1937). We propose a complete pattern of forewing venation for the Gryllidea Laicharting, 1781, extending the paradigm proposed by Béthoux & Nel (2001, 2002) for fossils. This pattern defines the acoustic and non-acoustic structures using well-defined homologies through the whole Gryllidea. We put in evidence potential apomorphies for Gryllidea, Grylloidea and Gryllotalpidae, but none of the wing traits originally proposed to define the †Baissogryllidae or the †Protogryllidae are found exclusively in these taxa. Our observations support the hypothesis of convergence between crickets and mole crickets for the stridulatory file.</p

The discovery of Mecochirus cenomanicus n. sp. (Decapoda, Glypheoidea, Mecochiridae) from the Cenomanian stratotype (Le Mans, France) extends the biostratigraphic range of Mecochirus Germar, 1827 from the Early to the Late Cretaceous. The holotype preserves under the pleon about 80 large eggs carried by the pleopods, and thus represents the second record of a decapod crustacean fossilized with clusters of eggs. The size and number of eggs suggest an ontogenetic development like that of the extant decapod crustaceans with short larval stage.</p
Parasitic bopyrid isopods of hermit crabs (Anomura, Paguridae) from the Atlantic coast of Mexico, with notes on their reproduction and distribution
Six species of bopyrids were detected from the examination of hermit crabs collected along the Atlantic coasts of Mexico and deposited in the Colección Nacional de Crustáceos housed at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Asymmetrione tuxtlaensis sp. nov., the third species of the genus from the west Atlantic, is described. The occurrence of Asymmetrione desultor, Pseudostegias atlantica and Stegias clibanarii are recorded for the first time from the Mexican Atlantic coasts and the distribution range of the last two species is extended. Both a new host and three new localities for Mexico are reported for Anathelges hyptius and Bopyrissa wolffi, respectively. Distribution and reproductive data are provided for all six species examined. A key to genera and species of bopyrid isopods that parasitize hermit crabs in the Mexican Atlantic is provided
Two new species of Russula subgenus Heterophyllidia (Russulaceae, Russulales) from Yanshan Mountains, North China
Two new species, Russula pseudopunicea C.L.Hou, G.Q.Cheng & H.Zhou sp. nov. and R. wulingshanensis C.L.Hou, G.Q.Cheng & H.Zhou sp. nov., from Yanshan mountains in North China are described herein based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses of nrITS, and nrLSU-rpb2-mtSSU gene regions. Morphologically, R. pseudopunicea sp. nov. is characterised by a reddish brown, light brown to brownish orange pileus with a greyish yellow margin, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores with warts forming a partial reticulum and pleurocystidia turning grey to purplish red in sulfovanillin. Russula wulingshanensis sp. nov. is characterised by a purple pinkish pileus with a grey-white to grey-purple margin, subglobose to broadly ellipsoid basidiospores with isolated warts, and pileocystidia turning black in sulfovanillin. Phylogenetic and morphological analyses resolved the two species in Russula subg. Heterophyllidia. Russula pseudopunicea sp. nov. and R. wulingshanensis sp. nov. were placed in the lineages of subsect. Virescentinae and subsect. Griseinae, respectively
The Mediterranean basin constitutes one of the best areas to analyse Neanderthal populations and lifestyles in South-Western Europe. In this context, new excavations conducted in the Middle Palaeolithic site of Cova del Puntal del Gat expand the information available regarding this rich region. In this study, new results are reported, including detailed studies on stratigraphy, lithic technology, anthracology, carpology, and zooarchaeology and taphonomy of macro and micromammals, with the final objective of characterizing the Neanderthals’ subsistence strategies and occupational patterns. These results are framed within a broader regional study perspective that includes MIS 5 and 4 sites. Chronostratigraphic review has enabled us to reorganize many sites that were originally included in MIS 3, towards older stages belonging to the end of MIS 4 and throughout MIS 5.</p
