Entomolepididae is a small siphonostomatoid family with a distinct shield-like body morphology, comprising 9 genera and 20 species. These genera are divided into two subfamilies, mostly based on their body segmentation, the genera with fused pedigerous somites 2 and 3 are included in the Parmulodinae subfamily, and the genera with free pedigerous somites 2 and 3 are included in the Entomolepinae subfamily. Spongiopsyllus is an endemic Entomolepinae genus, and its four known species are known only of Northeastern Brazil. This study reports three new species of this genus, all found associated with the sponge Aplysina cauliformis. The three new species share 16-segmented antennules, the position of the aesthetasc on the 14th segment, a 2-segmented antennal endopod and 4 setae on the outer lobe of the maxillule. Spongiopsyllus athosi sp. nov. has the maxillule with 3 setae on the inner lobe, and maxilliped endopod 3-segmented with setal formula (2,1,1+claw); S. porthosi sp. nov. has the maxilliped endopod 3-segmented with setal formula (2,2,0+claw); and S. aramisi sp. nov. differs from its congeners by having the antennal exopod with 6 spinules, plus the maxilliped endopod 3-segmented with seta formula (2,1,1+claw). An updated key to the species of the family is provided.</p

To increase the knowledge on diversity of freshwater cyanobacteria, we have characterized a novel filamentous, benthic cyanobacterium isolated from a pond in Golestan province, Iran. The isolate was studied using a polyphasic approach based on morphological and molecular characteristics, including phylogenetic and structural analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence and 16S to 23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS), respectively. The overall morphology of the isolate was similar to Nostocalean member’s strains with non-tapering filaments and distributed heterocytes. However, the molecular analyses suggested that it was more closely related to the lithobiont and rock-dwelling Goleter apudmare Miscoe & J.R.Johansen, which has tapered filaments and basal heterocytes. The 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic analysis, based on bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods, placed the isolate close to G. apudmare. The D1-D1’, Box-B and V3 helixes of the isolate’s ITS sequence were different when compared to other Goleter ITS sequences. Similar to G. apudmare HA4356-MV2 (JN385288.1) and Goleter sp. CHAB TP201702 (MT488126.1), tRNA genes were absent from the amplified ITS sequence in the studied isolate. These morphological and molecular characteristics differentiate this isolate from all other Goleter taxa described so far, which contributes to extend the knowledge on cyanobacterial diversity and occurrence of benthic cyanobacteria in Iranian freshwaters.</p

The first confirmed observation of Mustela vison Schreber, 1777, the American Mink, on île Tomé (département des Côtes-d’Armor, Brittany, France) was in 2012. Since then, an action program, named “Trégor Gestion Vison”, bringing together local structures involved in environmental issues, was set up to eradicate the species on this island. This program made it possible to collect, between 2014 and 2020, biological material from île Tomé (34 samples) but also from the nearby continent (Côtes-d’Armor, 38 samples). A genetic analysis was carried out, from this biological material, in order to identify modalities of colonization of the island. For this purpose, all samples were genotyped at 16 microsatellite markers. Results clearly show that there is a network of parental interrelations on île Tomé and therefore that the species reproduces on this island. They also clearly show, through the identification of at least five immigrants, that a repetition of colonization events took place. It is consistent to think that one mink colonizes the island each year, on average. Furthermore, individuals of both sexes are capable of colonizing the island, since the five probable immigrants identified are three males and two females. The highlighting of several colonization events indicates that île Tomé is not isolated from the nearby mainland, that colonization of the island occurs naturally, and that it cannot be an introduction by man. These results also explain why, after an apparently successful eradication in 2018, the island again hosted minks from 2020. Management operations for mammals introduced to the islands are often subject to failure, due to lack of knowledge, particularly regarding modalities of colonization and recolonization. Information on invasion pathways and gene flow between continental and island populations is crucial for assessing risks and establishing effective management strategies. Our study goes in this direction. It gives to the managers of île Tomé arguments to build an action strategy. In particular, it allows the selection of biosecurity measures most likely to limit recolonization. These measures will complete the continuous ecological monitoring already in progress.</p

No full text
The asymmetry observed in rhynchonellid brachiopod shells has been discussed for decades and continues to attract attention. This noteworthy modification of the anterior margin morphology during the ontogeny has evolved several times in rhynchonellids, and seems to reflect a genetic basis. First, we try to clarify the terminology regarding asymmetrical, dissymmetrical and symmetrical shells that has existed since the beginning of the 20th century. The Cretaceous populations observed clearly exhibit antisymmetry (also called random asymmetry). During the Cretaceous, some populations of Cyclothyris McKoy, 1844 include a mixture of truly asymmetrical specimens and others that exhibit an intermediate degree of asymmetry, herein called atypical morphologies. Shapes of specimens coming from two different locations in France were captured using geometric morphometrics. We used the range of different morphologies: 1) to test alternative hypotheses about the ontogeny of asymmetry; 2) to test for the possibility of several morphogroups; and 3) to discuss the determinism of the asymmetry.</p

New Pristaulacus Kieffer, 1900 (Hymenoptera, Evanioidea, Aulacidae) from India and Malaysia with a key to species and a revised checklist

No full text
Two new species of aulacid wasps, Pristaulacus iuliae Turrisi & Nobile sp. nov. from South India (Karnataka) and Pristaulacus ninae sp. nov. from Peninsular Malaysia (Pahang), are described, figured and compared with most related species. Based on the present addition, the Indomalayan area currently includes 27 species of Pristaulacus Kieffer out of 61 known from the whole Oriental Region, which is however a largely underestimated number. An identification key to species and an updated checklist of Pristaulacus occurring in the Indomalayan area are provided.</p

Novitates neocaledonicae XV : Deux espèces nouvelles d’Endiandra R.Br.

Carte de distributionTwo new species of Endiandra R.Br. are described from New Caledonia. Endiandra humboldtiana Munzinger & McPherson, sp. nov. is distinguishable from Endiandra lecardii Guillaumin and E. neocaledonica Kosterm. only by rather subtle details of flower size (3 mm long versus 2-2.5mm), leaf indument and distribution, even though molecular data indicate that it is genetically closer to an undescribed species from Roches de la Ouaième. Endiandra trichogyna Munzinger & McPherson, sp. nov. had previously been confused with E. baillonii (Pancher & Sébert) Guillaumin, but is easily distinguished from that and all other species present in New Caledonia by its densely pubescent ovary. A preliminary identification key is presented.Distribution map</p

The Vetigastropoda (Mollusca) of Walters Shoal, with descriptions of two new genera and thirty new species

No full text
The vetigastropod material collected on Walters Shoal during Cruise MD208 of the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos programme is documented. In total, 50 species were obtained, 30 of which are new and apparently endemic to the seamount. Of the other 20 species, eight are regionally endemic to the south-western Indian Ocean, 11 are more widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific and one is possibly of deep-water Atlantic origin. The primary affinities of the fauna are with warm temperate South Africa and the tropical western Indian Ocean, but one species is potentially a seamount endemic of southern affinity. A new pseudococculinid genus living on decomposing bird feathers is described, a biogenic substrate association previously unknown in the Mollusca. The following new genera are described: Imbricoscelis gen. nov. and Pterodacna gen. nov. The following new species are described: Akritogyra crenulata sp. nov., Bathymophila williamsae sp. nov., Benthobrookula araneum sp. nov., Be. galeneae sp. nov., Be. laticostata sp. nov., Be. scalaroides sp. nov., Be. semisculpta sp. nov., Bruceina areneformis sp. nov., Calliostoma pantopunctatum sp. nov., Cantrainea herosae sp. nov., Carinastele achrosta sp. nov., Cornisepta marshalli sp. nov., Emarginula lentiginosa sp. nov., E. nodulicostata sp. nov., E. retrogyra sp. nov., E. salebrosa sp. nov., Fluxinella dufresneae sp. nov., Gibbula roseosticta sp. nov., Hadroconus scobina sp. nov., Kaiparathina monticola sp. nov., Lissotesta wareni sp. nov., Microcollonia miniata sp. nov., Mikro crassus sp. nov., Parviturbo cicatricosus sp. nov., Phragmomphalina candida sp. nov., Pterodacna boucheti gen. et sp. nov., Solariella asaphea sp. nov., Spinicalliotropis lepidota sp. nov., Stomatella multilirata sp. nov. and Trenchia mcleani sp. nov.

The findings of this study expanded the geographic distribution of the genus Corynecladia J.Agardh, thought to be endemic to Australia. It is recorded for the first time as present in Europe, with two newly proposed species: C. millarii sp. nov. and C. mediterranea sp. nov. New collections belonging to the Laurencia complex were sampled from the Sicilian coasts of Italy. Examination of this material was carried out using both morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analyses of chloroplast (rbcL) and mitochondrial (COI-5P) nucleotide sequences. The resulting phylogenetic trees divided the Mediterranean specimens into two supported, separate branches, within the genus Corynecladia. Morphological analysis supported placement of these species within Corynecladia and as distinct from other congeners. Specifically, the two new species were conspicuous in the absence of a secondary cortex which is typical of other Corynecladia taxa. Included in this study is a detailed dichotomous key to the Laurencia complex taxa of the Mediterranean.</p

No full text
Four collections were isolated from submerged decaying wood in freshwater habitats. These species are characterized by scattered, capitate setae, straight, smooth, unbranched, brown conidiophores, phialidic conidiogenous cells, and cylindrical conidia. The phylogeny analysis using multi-gene sequences (ITS, LSU and TEF1-α) placed these isolates within Sporoschisma Berk. & Broome and formed a distinct clade separate from other species. Consequently, two new species, namely S. lignicola R.J.Xu & Q.Zhao, sp. nov. and S. verruculosa R.J.Xu & Q.Zhao, sp. nov. were introduced, based on the phylogenetic analysis and morphological features. Illustrations of these species were provided and compared with the similar species.</p
