No full text
The fossil shrimp species Caridina nitida A. Milne-Edwards, 1879 described from the Oligocene lacustrine deposits of Aix-en-Provence was considered to be a nomen dubium. Based on newly discovered specimens at the type locality, we provide an illustrated re-description of this species. The detailed morphological study leads us to place C. nitida within the extant genus Dugastella Bouvier, 1912. These new data support the hypothesis of a fresh to slightly brackish palaeoenvironment. A specimen possibly corresponding to A. Milne-Edward’s holotype was found in the collections of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle but since the fossil shrimp is not visible anymore (destroyed), a neotype is designated among the new specimens.</p

Two new species of Neooxyartes Ho, 2018 are described from Central Vietnam: N. minimus sp. nov. from Kon Ka Kinh National Park and N. neohiraseoides sp. nov. from Chu Yang Sin National Park. A new genus Mycovartes gen. nov. is described to accommodate Oxyartes vietnamensis Ho, 2018 resulting into the new combination Mycovartes vietnamensis (Ho, 2018) gen. et comb. nov. Two new species are described in the new genus: M. khoii gen. et sp. nov. from Chu Yang Sin and Ta Dung National Parks and M. montanus gen. et sp. nov. from Chu Yang Sin and Bidoup-Nui Ba National Parks. For all species, adults of both sexes, nymphs and eggs of wild and captive bred origin are described and figured. Pictures of living specimens, and distribution maps of the species of both genera are provided. The male vomer was dissected for all treated species and is described and figured. The relationship of the herein treated genera to closely related taxa is discussed and supported with recent phylogenetic studies.</p

No full text
A distinctive new genus and species of the subphylum Asterozoa, Componaster spurius n. gen., n. sp., is described from the Late Ordovician (early Katian) of Morocco. Construction of the ambulacral column is considered key to delineation of classes of the subphylum Asterozoa: morphology and configuration of the mouth frame, axial (ambulacral series), and adaxial (lateral series) enable class-level assignment of C. spurius n. gen., n. sp. to the Ophiuroidea Gray, 1840. However, overall form and aspects of extraxial skeletal expression from beyond the ambulacral column are strongly reminiscent of expressions of the Asteroidea de Blainville, 1830. The character complex of C. spurius n. gen., n. sp. precludes its alignment with any available ophiuran ordinal concept, and available data do not justify proposal of new ordinal terminology: the species is left incertae sedis at the ordinal level but a new familial taxon, Componasteridae n. fam., is recognized. Although Late Ordovician, the complex morphology of Componaster spurius n. gen., n. sp. suggests either plesiomorphic expressions from asterozoan diversification surviving until the Katian or significant homoplasy during early asterozoan history.</p

Inoue & H.A.Mill., B. bescherellei Steph., B. consociata (Steph.) H.A.Mill., B. deplanchei (Gottsche ex Steph.) Jovet-Ast, B. incrassata (Steph.) N.Kitag., B. paucidens (Steph.) H.A.Mill., and B. quadratistipula H.A.Mill. The genus Bazzania Gray (Lepidoziaceae, Marchantiophyta) was reviewed in several countries around New Caledonia, but the species of the local flora remain still imperfectly known and the oncoming survey of this flora often faces challenges in identifying new specimens. Some morphological characters used to differentiate the species are commented on, especially the insertion of the underleaves in relation to the ventral leaf bases. A review of types and reference specimens examined at G, PC and REN, together with about 250 recent vouchers collected mainly by the author allows characterization of 18 species based on morphological criteria and several taxonomic changes, mainly synonymies. Among the 18 species, seven are endemic: Bazzania bernieri (Steph.) Inoue & H.A.Mill., B. bescherellei Steph., B. consociata (Steph.) H.A.Mill., B. deplanchei (Gottsche ex Steph.) Jovet-Ast, B. incrassata (Steph.) N.Kitag., B. paucidens (Steph.) H.A.Mill. and B. quadratistipula H.A.Mill. Environmental conditions may have a strong impact on some morphological characters, so, to support species circumscriptions, further studies are needed that take account of ecological data and use macromolecular analysis. Several years ago, chemical investigations were initiated and could help to consolidate species delineation. A key to the New Caledonian species is provided and each species described and illustrated.</p

Four new species of Triraphis Ruthe, 1855 (Braconidae, Rogadinae) from a Mexican tropical dry forest and morphological descriptions of T. bradzlotnicki Sharkey, 2021 and T. davidwahli Sharkey, 2021

The koinobiont endoparasitoid genus Triraphis Ruthe, 1855 (Rogadinae Foerster, 1863) is a group of braconid wasps that contains 74 species distributed along the Nearctic, Neotropical, Oriental and Palearctic regions. We amplified a fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) for 19 specimens of Triraphis from the Chamela Biological Station (CBS), a region mainly composed of tropical dry forest near the Pacific coast of Jalisco, Mexico. Based on genetic distances among specimens of Triraphis from the CBS and all COI sequences of BINs assigned to Triraphis and Rogas Nees, 1819 available in the BOLDSYSTEMS database, we identified three clusters in the CBS that correspond with T. bradzlotnicki Sharkey, 2021, T. davidwahli Sharkey, 2021 and T. defectus Valerio, 2015, which were previously described from Costa Rica. Based on morphology, we identified individuals of T. fusciceps Cresson, 1869 and provided COI sequences of this species for the first time. Four genetic clusters of Triraphis correspond to four new species that are described here: T. kardia sp. nov., T. ocellatus sp. nov., T. divergens sp. nov. and T. luzabrilae sp. nov. Since T. bradzlotnicki and T. davidwahli were exclusively described with molecular data (COI), we morphologically described them based on Mexican specimens.</p

During a genetic analysis of western Atlantic Wrangeliaceae J.Agardh, specimens closely related to the generitype of Lophothamnion J.Agardh fell into a clade including the generitype of the earlier described Pleonosporium Nägeli, causing us to subsume the former genus. Two new species are described, P. novae-angliae G.W.Saunders & C.W.Schneider, sp. nov. for specimens from southern New England and New York, United States, formerly identified there as P. borreri (Smith) Nägeli, and P. ricksearlesii C.W.Schneider & G.W.Saunders, sp. nov. from Bermuda. The relationship of Pleonosporium with its sister genus Spongoclonium Sonder is discussed with the transfer of Spongoclonium australicum Womersley to Pleonosporium.</p

By compiling data from literature or collections and recent original observations (10 new departments) we provide a better understanding of the French range of Peltis ferruginea (Linnaeus, 1758), a rare species of Trogossitidae beetle. In order to encourage further exploration and to better identify the probable distribution of this species, we used modelling (niche models and bioclimatic variables) to estimate its potential distribution.</p

No full text
During the field work in 2017, a left carnivoran hemi-mandible was found at the locality Valeč-Šibeniční Vrch (= Waltsch-Galgenberg), the Czech Republic. Valeč-Šibeniční Vrch is located on the south-eastern periphery of the complex Doupovské Hory shield volcano (North Bohemia), and is formed by volcanosedimentary series. The hemi-mandible was found in pyroclastic deposits under the laminated limestones, from which so-called “rodent from Valeč” originated. This carnivoran represents an early aeluroid and is described as Fejfarictis valecensis n. gen., n. sp., belonging to a lineage hitherto unrecognized in Europe. It differs from early Oligocene aeluroids of Europe by its differently specialized dentition and is most similar to aeluroid genera Alagtsavbaatar and Asiavorator from the late Eocene and early Oligocene of Mongolia. Fejfarictis valecensis n. gen., n. sp., is most probably of earliest Oligocene age, and together with Anictis represent the earliest migration of aeluroids to Europe.</p

Croton maranonensis: a new species of Euphorbiaceae from the tropical inter-Andean dry valleys

No full text
We describe Croton maranonensis Riina & Martín-Muñoz sp. nov., a species in Croton section Julocroton (Mart.) G.L.Webster from the seasonally dry tropical forests and shrublands of the inter-Andean valleys. This species is a small shrub occurring along the Marañón river valley in Peru and similar dry areas in southern Ecuador. We surveyed morpho-anatomical characters of the new species and closely related taxa. To confirm the placement of the new species in C. section Julocroton, we conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis including three accessions of the new species and selected representatives of section Julocroton and related groups within Croton L. Micro- and macro-morphological evidence, and molecular data support C. maranonensis sp. nov. as an independent lineage within the C. section Julocroton clade. We compared the new species with morphologically similar species in the same section that also occur in the Andean region, including C. flavispicatus Rusby, C. triqueter Lam., and C. hondensis (H.Karst.) G.L.Webster.</p
