In Nepal like in other countries increasing number of women are entering medical school. More number of women in medicine may have advantages. Women are stated to be more empathetic and this may change the doctor-patient relationship. Also this can lead to higher status of women in society and better healthcare for women and children. There are also challenges like the problem of gender equity, increased security for women students, the problems of acceptance by society and senior health workers and in serving in rural areas after graduation. Teaching-learning styles may require change The implications of increasing number of women in medicine has not been studied in Nepal and developing countries. There are a number of important research questions which will be important for the future of healthcare.

Orbital Extension of Supraorbital Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is a rare clinicopathologic entity that shares both clinical and histopathological features with Kimura disease. Although they were once considered as different stages of the same disease, they are now known to represent separate entities. ALHE is a condition that causes swellings in the head and neck region affecting muscular arteries and is benign in nature. Orbital involvement is unusual. Diagnosis of ALHE is frequently confused with malignant tumour until biopsy is done. We present here a young female with unilateral, painless and slowly progressive swelling on the inner and upper aspect of her left orbit, who was diagnosed as a case of ALHE with orbital involvement on the basis of CT scan and excisional biopsy. Regular follow up was performed and no evidence of recurrence was found

    Polymyositis Associated with Non-Secretory Myeloma

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, a heterogeneous group of disorders characterised by weakness and inflammation of skeletal muscle, are often associated with malignancies. This association has been infrequently reported in Asian countries. We report a case of an Indian patient who presented with polymyositis in conjunction with non-secretory myeloma, hypercalcaemia and renal failure

Mesenchymal   chondrosarcoma (MCS) is a rare tumour accounting for less than 1% of all chondrosarcomas. We report here, the case of a 30-year-old female who presented with neck pain, weakness and tingling and numbness starting on the right side and later involving all four limbs. MRI revealed an ill-defined neoplastic lesion showing specks of calcification and arising from the right half of C2 and C3 cervical vertebrae. Microscopy showed an admixture of well differentiated cartilage showing focal calcification and spindly cell areas having a hemangiopericytomatous patter

    Cutaneous Nocardia Brasiliensis

    Get PDF
Nocardia brasiliensis is a rare human pathogen that is usually associated with localised cutaneous infections. We report a case of primary cutaneous Nocardia brasiliensis infection causing delayed wound healing that developed after ovarian cystectomy in an otherwise healthy 32-year-old woman. The patient was initially treated with cotrimoxazole, however due to intolerance intravenous amikacin was given and gradually the wound healed. The diagnosis was confirmed by demonstrating the causative organism in exudates, and cultures. Early diagnosis as well as early institution of chemotherapy is effective in most patients, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the isolate should be performed to identify the best treatment options
