Experiences of women living with HIV who underwent Long Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone (LLETZ) in selected hospitals of Vhembe District, Limpopo Province. South Africa
MPHDepartment of Public HealthBackground: Large Loop Electrosurgical removal of the Transformation Zone (LLETZ) is a mutually agreed intervention of choice by researchers in screening for and treatment of pre-malignant lesions and is therefore implemented worldwide. Several studies have been conducted globally, regionally and nationally on the concept of LLETZ and women living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Hardly any such study was conducted within Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Being a surgical procedure, it is associated with potential side effects for individuals undergoing it.
Purpose: The study intended to explore and describe the experiences of women living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus who underwent LLETZ in selected hospitals of Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, South Africa.
Methodology: The researcher conducted a scoping review guided by the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and searched for published articles related to LLETZ experiences of HIV-positive women from 2013 to 2023 in the English language only. Keywords for searching various databases included experiences, HIV, LLETZ, reproductive age and women. The review identified critical factors and characteristics associated with the topic as well as gaps in the knowledge base. The researcher embarked on a qualitative study, exploratory and descriptive in design, guided by a phenomenological approach cognitive framework. A purposive sampling technique was applied. The sample constituted seven (7) participants, including two (2) for pretest and one (1) for verifying data saturation. One-to-one in-depth, unstructured interviews were conducted. Approaches to data analysis included organizing, reading, coding, identifying categories/themes and representing and interpreting the data. The Tesch coding procedure was implemented as part of the thematic analysis. The study consists of two articles.
Results: Eight main themes emerged, with four constituting sub-themes. The LLETZ intervention process involves several aspects, including outcomes, psychological experiences, physical experiences, psychosocial support, financial support, misconceptions and education, recommendations and reflections and the time factor. Women often experience unrealistic expectations from interventions due to misconceptions. Uncertainty emerged as a factor affecting psychological and psychosocial experiences as well as the screening test, intervention procedure and results turnaround time. Recommendations are made to patients, health professionals, educators and researchers. It is evident that there is still much work to be done with regard to this phenomenon to achieve the goals of the third millennium.
Conclusion: The discussion of the study findings reflected on the reviewed literature. Uncertainty was identified as the dominant force behind women’s experiences. This implicates knowledge deficit as the
main factor. Thus, all possible manners of information given to patients and their support system must be applied
International Financial Reporting Standards for Small, Medium and Enterprises (IFRS for SMEs) and the quality of financial reporting: Some evidence from the Limpopo Province
MCom (Accounting)Department of AccountancySmall and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in the South African economy. South Africa's Companies Act (71 of 2008) requires companies to follow either full International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) or IFRS for SMEs. IFRS for SMEs was introduced by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in 2009 as an alternative framework for eligible entities, offering an option instead of the complete set of IFRSs. Despite the introduction of IFRS for SMEs, there has been no comprehensive examination of its impact on the financial reporting quality (FRQ) of SMEs in South Africa. This study aimed to provide in-depth insights into the quality of financial reporting by SMEs in the Limpopo Province since the adoption of IFRS for SMEs in South Africa.
The study sampled twenty accounting firms, selecting five from each municipality to handle Annual Financial Statements (AFS) for five SMEs each, resulting in a total of 100 SMEs. Since there is no universally agreed-upon metric for assessing FRQ, the study used three previously employed measures and an aggregate measure. This approach served two purposes: firstly, to account for all facets of FRQ as a single proxy might fall short, and secondly, to enhance the generalisability of our findings.
Ordinary Least Square (OLS) Regression analysis was employed to investigate the period post-IFRS for SMEs adoption. This investigation spanned two periods: the initial five years (2010-2014) and the last five years (2015-2019), with the objective of assessing whether FRQ improved over time. Several models were examined using linear regression to analyse the relationship between independent and dependent variables. The analysis was conducted using STATA 15 software. The study’s findings offer evidence that precise accrual recording and the adoption of IFRS for SMEs have positively impacted the financial reporting quality of SMEs, leading to increased earnings levels and improved accounting conservatism. Furthermore, the findings accentuate the importance of adhering to accrual accounting principles and embracing standardised reporting practices for SMEs, as these contribute to the overall credibility and utility of financial information for stakeholders. This study offers valuable insights to accounting standard-setting bodies, professional associations, SME accountants,
owners, investors, and academics, enhancing their understanding of IFRS for SMEs’ impact on SME financial reporting quality.NR
Compatible components of the integrated pest management of Bathycoelia distincta (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae

It causes damage by directly feeding on macadamia kernel throughout the season and reducing nut quality by inducing nut abscission, premature nut abortion, necrotic lesions, deformed kernels, discoloration, or translucent blemishes on the kernel. Currently, growers rely on chemical insecticides to control stink bug populations. However, with overreliance and extensive use of chemical insecticides, the B. distincta has developed some resistance to certain active ingredients Furthermore, there is no doubt that agricultural intensification is the primary driver of the loss of biodiversity globally. Therefore, there is a need to develop Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to effectively minimize the damage caused by B. distincta and the loss of biodiversity due to agricultural intensification. The goal of this study was to investigate the role of landscape context, elevation, flying vertebrates, and pesticide application in shaping arboreal arthropod assemblages and macadamia nut quality metrics and evaluate the efficacy of alternative pest control measures to control B. distincta, explicitly focusing on entomopathogenic fungi and egg parasitoids Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston, 1858) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae). Landscape context and elevation were the principal factors that explained species richness and arthropod size. Species richness and insect size decreased with increasing pesticide application rate; however, it was not significant. Insect damage did not vary in response to pesticide application, but the proportion of sound kernels decreased significantly with increasing pesticide application. All entomopathogenic fungal treatments were effective against B. distincta, with chitinase enzyme leading to a 95% mortality rate. Under field conditions, EPFs and a chemical knock-down spray showed no significant difference between the treatments. All parasitoid treatments significantly affected B. distincta egg mortality, with two pairs reaching a 100% parasitism rate. The processes that increase sound kernel recovery seem to be related to an increase in invertebrate community diversity and arthropod size, and although the mechanisms related to this are not always clear, the results suggest that arthropod diversity could be a good proxy for these processes. On the other hand, the study results showed that EPFs and stink bug egg parasitoids, Trissolcus basalis, may be used as biological control agents against B. distincta. Overall, the thesis emphasizes the importance of reducing pesticide application and using

Developing interventions for the adoption of solar home systems in rural areas of Vhembe District, South Africa
PhDRDVInstitute for Rural DevelopmentEnergy poverty threatens humanity worldwide but is much more pronounced in sub-Saharan Africa. Current energy generation trajectories are unsustainable because of their overreliance on burning fossils. Adopting renewable energy sources such as solar photovoltaics is one of the viable and sustainable ways of confronting this scourge and its associated challenges. Across the globe, rooftop solar home systems (SHS) have been used to electrify rural and isolated households. However, in South Africa, the uptake of the SHS has been low. Adopting a rooftop SHS hinges on the household's behaviour to accept or reject the technology in their homes. A clear understanding of household behavioural intention has the potential to unlock the development of sustainable and effective interventions for adopting SHS among rural communities. A behavioural approach underpinned by the extended Theory of Planned Behaviour was followed first to understand the behavioural beliefs and, later, identify behavioural determinations and predictors shaping SHS adoption intention among the selected villages of Vhembe District Municipality.
Methodologically, an explorative mixed approach employing a sequential design comprising two distinct data collection and analysis stages. During the first data collection phase, 30 households were purposively sampled across the three selected villages, with 310 households randomly selected during the second phase of the cross-sectional survey. The first phase mainly solicited underlying beliefs shaping SHS adoption intention, while the survey unearthed the determinants and predictors of the technology among rural communities. Atlas ti version 9 was used to analyse qualitative data through thematic networks and coding of the primary documents. Results obtained during the first phase were used to formulate a Likert-type scale questionnaire for the second phase data collection phase, which covered 310 households randomly selected across the same three villages. IBM SPSS Statistics and IBM SPSS Amos version 27 were used for data analysis using data reduction techniques such as exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and hypothesis testing statistical techniques.
Results revealed that grid electricity, firewood, paraffin, solar photovoltaics (PV) and candles are the dominant energy sources in the district. In addition, household illumination, water heating, entertainment, cooking and air conditioning emerged as the primary energy household uses. Also, results revealed that households have different perceptions towards rooftop SHS. More than half of households believed that rooftop SHS does not work well during cloudy and rainy climatic conditions. Additionally, lack of trust, unaffordability of the technology, inadequate technical knowledge, unavailability of technicians, reliability and the quality of both the power produced and the solar equipment were some of the prevalent beliefs held by the rural households. Data reduction techniques were performed on the survey data
and produced a five-factor solution with 12 main items. The emergent factors were intention, perceived behaviour control, subjective norm, attitude and trust, all with an acceptable Cronbach alpha value above 0.7. Since the extended Theory of Planned Behaviour underpinned the study, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was performed to test if the measurement structure of the observed variables fits the hypothesized model. Results revealed that the measurement structure of observed variables passed reliability and validity tests, as measured with Cronbach alpha, Average Variance Extracted (AVE) and Composite Reliability (CR). Model fit statistics were acceptable (X²/df=2.7, CFI=0.970, SRMR=0.033, TLI=0.955) as Hair et al. (1998) recommended. Attitude and trust positively influence the intention of adopting a SHS among the rural households of Vhembe District Municipality.
Succinctly, rooftop SHS in the district is determined by three factors, i.e., social, technical and policy determinants. The interplay of these determinants with the five behavioural predictors (intention, subjective norm, attitude, trust and perceived behaviour control) shapes the overall decision to adopt a SHS at the household level. Based on this, a set of interventions anchored on three key determinants is proposed. Thus, it is recommended that policy, social and technical factors be ensured at the praxis and policy levels for the successful adoption of SHS among rural communities. Since the proposed interventions were developed through participatory methods, the proposed interventions resonate with the local and contextual realities of the rural households in the district.NR

Political interference in the recruitment of communication manager: a case study Mopani District Municipalities

The study attempted to establish the impact of political influence during the recruitment of officials in the Mopani District Municipalities for the position of Communications Managers. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study diligently probed the intricate connections between political influence and the appointments of key personnel. Notably, the research brought to light a discernible correlation between political affiliations and the reward mechanism within the recruitment process, wherein loyal supporters were often favoured. It is imperative to acknowledge that the scope of this study was circumscribed to a desktop analysis, marking both its strengths and limitations. While the desktop study provided valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of political influence, it also underscores the need for a more expansive empirical investigation. This recommendation stems from the understanding that a nuanced examination of the political influence interference and its overarching control within government institutions in South Africa necessitates a more holistic and on-the-ground exploration. This finding was underpinned by a thorough examination of both qualitative research data and relevant secondary literature. The study found a significant connection between the political influence of appointments as rewards for loyal supporters using the qualitative research approach and secondary literature. The study was limited to a desktop analysis, it is recommended that further empirical study should be undertaken on the political influence ‘interference’ and political control of government institutions in South Africa. This study serves as a crucial stepping stone in understanding the multifaceted interplay between political forces and the recruitment of Communication Managers. As it lays the groundwork for further empirical research, it beckons researchers and stakeholders alike to examine deeper into the intricacies of political influence in governmental appointments, offering a springboard for more comprehensive and nuanced analyses.NR
The role of leadership traits in successfully navigating politically motivated workplace conflicts by public managers: a case of Vhembe District Municipality in Limpopo Province
MPMDepartment of Public and Development AdministrationThe study was intended to evaluate the role of leadership traits in successfully navigating politically motivated workplace conflicts by public managers in the Vhembe District. Workplace conflict has a detrimental impact in any public institutions’ productivity and financial viability. The specific problem is that some public managers lack effective leadership traits to manage politically motivated conflicts. In addition to this, many studies indicate how leaders through their institutions have adeptly mediated workplace conflict. The study was informed by the interpretivism paradigm, and a case study research design was implemented. A qualitative research methodology was used since the study sought to solicit detailed information from the participants. The total population comprised of 60 managers and a purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 20 public managers for participation in the study. The study area was in the Vhembe District, inclusive of its two local municipalities, Collins Chabane Local Municipality and Musina Local Municipality. Thematic data analysis was used as a data analysis tool. The study’s major finding revealed that causes such as power struggles and lack of transparency are the major causes of politically motivated conflict in the workplace. However, the causes have a severe effect on the productivity of institutions. The study recommends that causes of politically motivated conflict in the workplace should be addressed before it can lead to conflict, in that way it will help managers to deal with fewer conflicts.
In addressing politically motivated workplace conflict, the municipality should consider stringent measures on people who do not focus on their tasks because it slows down the progress on the institution.NR
Long term peak electricity demand forecastion in South Africa using quantile regression

supply growth to meet the new and growing demand for higher economic
growth rates, especially in energy-intensive sectors. To diversify the energy
mix, the country also needs to take urgent actions to ensure the sustainability
of renewable energy and energy e ciency by 2030. Hence, it is important
to provide a modelling framework for forecasting long-term peak electricity
demand and quantifying uncertainty of future electricity demand for better
electricity security management. In order to estimate and capture changes
in long-term peak electricity demand, the study employed quantile regression
(QR) based models, including hybrid models for assessing and managing
electricity demand using South African data. The changes in long-term
electricity demand depend on network location areas and the uncertainties
within the energy sectors. Long-term peak electricity demand forecasting
using QR models seems scarce in South Africa. The current study closes a
gap by developing a modelling framework that can be used for future electricity
demand forecasting. Although many studies have been done on short-,
medium and long-term peak electricity demand forecasting, an investigation
of the extremal quantile regression (EQR) model for forecasting electricity
demand (based on combined economic and weather conditions) still needs to
be explored as far as we know. Accurately predicting extreme electricity demand
distributions would signi cantly mitigate load shedding and overloading
and allow energy-e cient storage. This thesis identi es weather-related
and non-weather-related factors using the EQR approach to modelling and
estimating the error of extremely low and high quantiles of peak electricity
demand. Results from the thesis show that EQR provides a higher level of
detail and can model the non-central behaviour of electricity demand than
the other models used in the study. The study has shown how the additive
quantile regression (AQR) model can provide the highest predictive ability
and create superior accuracy of the forecast results. Power systems reliability
requires a probabilistic characterisation of extreme peak loads, which results
in severe system stress and causes grid problems. Accurate predictions of
long-term electricity demand are very important as such forecasts can be
used in the timing and rate of occurrence of such extreme peak loads. The
study used hybrid additive quantile regression coupled with autoregressive
models and variable selection using Lasso for hierarchical interactions to examine
the power system's reliability in random extreme peak loads.NR
Enhancing public participation on Integrated Development Planning in a South African rural based municipalty
PhDRDVInstitute of Rural DevelopmentThis study aimed to develop a strategic framework to enhance the public’s participation in the integrated development planning (IDP) process within South Africa’s local government. It was assumed that perceptions and extent of public participation in integrated development planning differed due to distance from the service centre. The exploratory sequentially mixed-methods approach, including surveys and interviews with key stakeholders in Wards 4, 10 and 18 of Thulamela Local Municipality, was adopted. Selection of the study areas took into account distance from the main municipal service centre in Thohoyandou. Ward 18 was most proximal followed by Ward 10 and then Ward 4. Significant patterns and statistical insights regarding community engagement were revealed. Overall, public participation in IDP processes was low, with notable variations across the three wards. For instance, residents of Ward 10 demonstrated higher engagement in situational analysis and project formulation, while those in Ward 4 exhibited greater involvement in monitoring and evaluation (P < 0.05). Further analysis identified enablers of participation, particularly in Ward 18, where residents reported the highest levels of inner resolve and perceived citizen skills necessary for engagement. However, they also expressed concerns about lower accountability from municipal leaders, despite feeling well-informed (P < 0.05). In contrast, Ward 10 residents felt more empowered in decision-making processes, suggesting that their input was effectively implemented. The study also highlighted significant barriers to public participation, particularly in Ward 10, where residents faced challenges such as a lack of skills and timely information dissemination (P < 0.05). Logistical issues, including transportation difficulties, were more pronounced in this ward, negatively impacting participation rates.
