The unique challenges facing the Mozambican immigrants in Mbombela Local Municipality

    No full text
    M. AdminDepartment of Public and Development AdministrationThe study sought to investigate Mozambican immigrants’ unique challenges in Mbombela Local Municipality. Migration is the process of moving to another area with the intention of being a permanent resident. Factors that might influence a person’s decision to immigrate include career possibilities, environmental considerations, a desire to get a better education, the need to escape danger, persecution, terrorism, human rights abuses, and natural catastrophes. Immigrants increase economic activity, foster innovation, and raise native-born workers’ productivity. Immigration growth also increases tax receipts and fiscal experience. Even though they may only have the option to relocate, immigrants face several challenges in the nations where they settle, including language problems, cultural differences, prejudice, and difficulties finding employment, housing, and health care. To ensure the logical premise of the research, the study applied interpretivism and positivist research paradigms and a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. The researcher adopted a purposive subtype of the non-probability sampling method to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The researcher used the open-ended questionnaire to collect qualitative data and structured interviews for quantitative data. Both statistical and narrative data analysis were used as they focus on various methods for interpreting data. For quantitative data, the researcher employed statistical data analysis, and thematic data analysis for qualitative data. The research is intended to greatly advance people’s knowledge and diversity associated with migration and to enlighten them about the challenges facing immigrants and its effect on both the migratory communities and the immigrants. The study adhered to the ethical guidelines of the institution. Failure to acquiring legal documentation and formal employment forced labour and violence and are the major challenges facing Mozambican immigrants. Difficulties for immigrants to further studies due to lack of legal documentation is another challenge. The study recommends municipal policies, strategic plans, and reports pertaining to immigration and foreign nationals by consulting local government documents. It is significant to simplify immigration processes with the Department of Home Affairs to improve legalisation of permits and documents.Regan Manzini and Delron Manzin

The Constitutionality of Permission to Occupy as Opposed to the Deed of Grant and Title Deed under South African Law

Master of LawsDepartment of Public LawSouth Africa attained its democratic rule 30 years ago. However, solutions to some fundamental issues, such as the constitutionality of permission to occupy (PTO) vis a vis the deed of grant regarding land tenure, remain elusive. Although PTO is widely utilised as evidence of title to land ownership, a landholder with a PTO is insecure. This is so because PTO does not grant ownership to the holder, but it is commonly accepted that the personal rights granted are similar to having a real right. Moreover, PTOs are not registrable at the Deeds Office, as opposed to a deed of grant. It is further argued that, although the title deed is recognised by the Constitution, its use and availability in servicing the marginalised communities in urban and rural communities is worrisome. Title deeds are permanent and give the owners the right to occupy and enjoy the use of the land or property. However, PTO is temporary and can be repealed at the whim of authorities. Despite considerable efforts to eliminate overreliance on PTOs, their continuous use in tribal communities signifies the need for it to be considered a real right in law and practice. Ensuring that PTOs confer a real right is essential in solving the challenges of poverty and inequality in rural and urban communities. In particular, such a policy thrust would redress the discriminatory legacy of the apartheid system. This study's findings will inform a policy change and law reform. It will introduce a new perspective in law by influencing a new thinking amongst the legal fraternity. The law professionals will be intriqued to in proffer appropriate legal instruments critical to empowering marginalised communities

MSc (e-Science)Department of Mathematical and Computational SciencesVolatility is essential when trading or investing in cryptocurrency Ethereum. Over the years, investors, traders and investment banks have found it difficult to predict the price volatility of Ethereumdue to its rapid price fluctuation. This report focuses on forecasting the price volatility of Ethereum for the next two days using daily historical observations of the price of Ethereumobtained from Coindesk and tweets extracted from Twitter ranging from the 1st of August 2022 to the 8th of August 2022. Two models are used to compute the forecast for the next two days: support vector regression and recurrent neural network. The main evaluationmetric used is the mean absolute error. In this study, according to MAE, RNN without tweets forecasts outperformthe SVR model without tweets forecasts, with the best model being the RNN without tweets producing an MAE of 0.0309

Master of AdministrationDepartment of Public and Development AdministrationThe South African Police Service (SAPS) is required by the constitution to prevent, investigate, and combat crimes that are likely to occur in communities. The study provided information on the difficulties the South African Police Service, Limpopo Province, faces in putting its crime prevention policy into practice. In order to prevent crime and guarantee the protection and security of the nation's citizens, the South African Police Service (SAPS) was established. The SAPS investigates and fights crime as part of the Justice Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster. According to the 1998 White Paper on Safety and Security, SAPS is the primary law enforcement agency in the nation and is in charge of carrying out the country's and the province of Limpopo's crime prevention policy. The South African Police Service encounters challenges within the increasingly sophisticated, technological, and international crime arena. A literature review was also conducted to gain a thorough knowledge of SAPS's difficulties and challenges in implementing a crime prevention strategy in Limpopo Province. The study followed a mixed methods approach, using the pragmatic paradigm and applying descriptive and contextual research designs. The study used semi-structured interviews and self-administered questionnaires to collect data from SAPS members. The study used both purposive and random sampling methods. Thematic analysis was adopted for qualitative data, and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for quantitative data. The study's findings sought to improve SAPS's skills, competencies, and capacity to implement crime prevention strategies. Keyword

LLM in Human RightsIsmail Mahomed Centre for Human and People's RightsThis study critically examined the intersection of feminism and the constitutional right to equality in South Africa, focusing on women’s succession rights to traditional leadership positions. Despite the progressive constitutional framework that guarantee=d equality and prohibited gender-based discrimination, customary law practices most notably the principle of male primogeniture continued to marginalise women within traditional leadership succession, reflecting deeply entrenched patriarchal norms. The aim of the research was to analyse the legislative and judicial frameworks addressing equality and their efficacy in ensuring women’s rights to succeed in traditional leadership. The objectives included evaluating feminism values and theories relevant to gender equality and assessing judicial interpretations that influenced customary law reform in South Africa. Adopting a doctrinal methodology, the study analysed statutes, landmark court decisions such as Bhe and Shilubana and feminism theories to understand the evolving legal landscape. No empirical data collection was undertaken, ensuring a focused legal and theoretical enquiry. Findings revealed ongoing tensions between constitutional mandates for substantive equality and customary practices governed by patriarchal traditions. Judicial interventions progressively invalidated discriminatory customs, fostering greater recognition of women’s leadership rights. However, challenges remained in fully aligning customary succession practices with gender equality principles. The study concluded that achieving substantive gender equality in traditional leadership succession necessitated continued legal reform informed by feminism and a commitment to constitutional values. Such reforms were essential to dismantle entrenched patriarchal barriers and uphold women’s human dignity, equality and freedom with the South African society

MED in Curriculum StudiesDepartment of Professional and Curriculum StudiesThis study aimed to explore the experiences of novice educators teaching in multi-grade classrooms. Multi-grade teaching has become a key focus in education, involving the integration of different grade levels within a single classroom, all taught by one educator. As such, this study specifically explored the experiences of novice educators in such teaching environments. Given the nature of the research, a qualitative approach was chosen. The study was carried out in selected public primary schools in the Niani East Circuit of Vhembe East District, Limpopo Province, with data collected through classroom observations and interviews. Nine public primary schools with multi-grade classrooms in the Niani East Circuit were selected for the study. Purposive sampling was used to select participants, comprising nine novice educators and nine principals from these schools. The data were analysed using a thematic approach. The research followed an interpretivism paradigm, aiming to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences, behaviours, and social contexts of novice educators, ultimately producing rich, detailed data that illuminate the complexities of human behaviour in this educational setting. Reflective practice, professional collaboration, and Professional and Social Responsibility were the approaches used in this study to highlight how novice educators focused on their teaching practices and experiences to improve and develop as educators. It is hoped that the study will reveal experiences that included challenges or successes regarding teaching multi-grade classes. The findings could be useful to school principals and other stakeholders to inform practices that might be employed to induct novice educators into multi-grade teaching

MENVSCI in GeographyDepartment of Geography and Environmental SciencesThe research aimed to investigate the sedimentological and mineralogical characteristics of Limpopo River sand upstream of Beit Bridge, situated on the South Africa/Zimbabwe border. Due to limited information available about the minerals and sediments associated with Beit Bridge, this study was conducted to fill this knowledge gap and enhance knowledge of the river’s history and environmental changes. Samples of sediment representing the river were collected from upstream of Beit Bridge along the Limpopo River. The sieve analysis technique was used to classify the particle size of the samples. The X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) analysis identified mineral composition, detecting quartz, feldspar, and other minerals. The petrographic analysis offered detailed mineral component observations, confirming XRD findings. Subsequently the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis traced sediment provenance by identifying specific elements and compounds, illuminating geological history. The results showed that sand was the most dominant component across all stations, with varying proportions of fine silt and gravel. XRD and microscopic analysis revealed minerals such as quartz, plagioclase, microcline, muscovite, and actinolite to be dominant. The prevalence of quartz suggests a quartz-rich source, while plagioclase indicates a predominance of igneous and metamorphic rocks in the local geological formations. The geochemical analysis indicated intense weathering, as evidenced by the high concentration of SiO2 in the sediments. The SiO2/Al2O3 ratio suggests significant leaching processes. Enrichment of Large Ion Lithophile Elements (LILE) in the sediments indicates a provenance from the subduction zone's geochemical region. The Al2O3/TiO2 ratio reflects diverse sources, including basic and ultrabasic plutonic protoliths. These geochemical insights contribute to understanding the area's geological history and mineral resource potential, guiding future exploration and exploitation efforts. The research successfully determined the sedimentological and mineralogical characteristics of the Limpopo River sand upstream of Beit Bridge. The combination of sieve analysis, XRD analysis, petrographic analysis, and XRF analysis yielded valuable insights into the historical transformations in the river's surroundings and the geological mechanisms that influenced the terrain in the examined area

    D. Admin.Department of Public and Development AdministrationThis study aims to explore the literature on leadership competencies of the Senior Management Service (SMS) of the South African public service by incorporating international best practices from selected countries. The thesis focused on the challenges confronting members of the South African SMS and also on the regulatory frameworks underpinning leadership development in the South African public service. The study also focused on the leadership theories and leadership styles underpinning leadership competencies in the public service. The research determined whether it is possible to align the agile leadership model to the public service leadership competency model. To address the main aim of the study and the underlying research problem, a non-empirical approach was adopted. This research adopted a qualitative research method using scholarly literature. The post-positivist research paradigm was utilised. The findings of the study are that the competencies identified in the SMS Competency Framework (CF) do not adequately prepare public servants to perform their duties effectively in the networked governance context, that SMS members are failing to attend training due to operational requirements, that competency assessments results are not made available to SMS members, that assessment results are not a consideration when deciding on the appointment of a candidate, that departments experience financial constraints for financing the resources needed to implement CFs and that coaching and mentorship in the public service is not yet formalised. The study recommends that the directive on the implementation of competency based assessments for members of the Senior Management Service (SMS) in the public service, as amended (Minister for the public service and administration, in terms of chapter 4, part II (D) and chapter 4, part IV of the public service Regulations, 2001) be reviewed and, assessment results to be a consideration when making appointment decision for SMS posts, departments to partner with Public Sector Education and Training Authority (PSETA) to solicit financial support for SMS training/development where appropriate budget should be reserved specifically for competency related training interventions, introduce stringent measures to stop training budgets from being shifted to other needs should be introduced, departments to formalise senior management mentorship programme in order to address the identified competency gaps and departments to use online leadership programmes offered by the National School of Government (NSG) and other training institutions. For researchers, the findings can add to leadership competency theories, especially in the public service. For policymakers, the findings can form a solid foundation that they can rely on to work out public policies for leadership development in the South African public service. For Public Administration, the findings will contribute to the development of the body of knowledge of the discipline of Public Administration. Further studies are recommended towards understanding the challenges confronting SMS members in the implementation of competency frameworks, and the determination of the effectiveness of competency frameworks. The study is limited to SMS members in the South African public service

    No full text
    M. Com (Business Management)Department of Business ManagementEntrepreneurship is recognised as a tool to reduce unemployment, poverty, and other socio-economic challenges facing South Africa. To respond to these challenges, higher education institutions in South Africa have implemented entrepreneurship courses, training programmes and competitions to promote student entrepreneurship development. Entrepreneurship education encourages individuals to start their businesses upon graduation, rather than seeking and relying on employment. However, research on the role of entrepreneurship education is limited. Hence, this study aims to investigate the role of entrepreneurship education on student entrepreneurial development, at the University of Venda. This study utilised qualitative research design to achieve the following objectives: to identify the factors of entrepreneurship education that contribute to student entrepreneurship development; to identify the challenges of entrepreneurship education that hinders student entrepreneurship development and to develop strategies to enhance entrepreneurship development to better support student entrepreneurship development. The targeted population comprised University of Venda student-entrepreneurs who participate in entrepreneurship education programmes, and those who are registered for entrepreneurship courses. A convenience sampling technique was used to select 10 students and data was collected through semi-structured face-to-face and telephone interviews according to the research objectives. The collected data was analysed thematically using Atlas.ti version 8.4. The analysed data answered the research questions in-line with - the factors of entrepreneurship education that contribute to student start-ups; the challenges of EE that hinder student entrepreneurship development, as well as strategies to improve entrepreneurship education. The results revealed that some of the benefits of entrepreneurship education are - students gained entrepreneurial skills, mindset, and access to resources through entrepreneurship programs, however, challenges arose due to the course focusing more on theory than practical learning. The recommendations made include the suggestion that the University of Venda should collaborate with private companies and government to create internship opportunities for entrepreneurship students to gain hands-on experience. This study is among the first to have managed to identify the beneficial factors of entrepreneurship education; the challenges, and the strategies to enhance entrepreneurship education. This study was conducted at the University of Venda which means the results may not be generalised in other universities. The researcher, however, further recommends that similar studies can be conducted in other universities to find out any similarities or differences in the conclusions, thereby enlarging the literature on the topic
