    Suitability of exotic Acacia as fodder species on highly saline silty black soil of wild ass sanctuary (WAS) of little rann of Kutch, Gujarat

    Acacia ampliceps (salt wattle) is a very fast growing shrub/ small tree from northwestern Australia that has considerable promise for fodder plantings on alkaline/ saline soils, especially where its roots have access to a shallow brackish water table. A. bivenosa (two nerved wattle) makes a complex with A. ampliceps .Research trials were laid on black silty clay (medium), soil depth: 40-75 cm at Kordha, Sami Range in Patan, Gujarat at the fringe of Wild Ass Sanctuary in July 2007 to find out suitable exotic fodder plant species with appropriate planting practice. Trials were laid with control (T1), wheat husk (1/2 kg) (T2), FYM (5kg) (T3), wheat husk + FYM (T4), barley husk (250g) (T5) and FYM + barley husk (T6) treatments. Randomised block design with three replications was applied. Spacing was 4 m X 4 m for A. bivenosa (12 plants/ treatment and 3m x 3m for A. ampliceps (16 plants/ treatment). Plantation suffered badly due to heat shock during summer in 2009. The initial mean survival of A. ampliceps was 72.6 % and growth was 161.3 cm (height) and 169.5 cm (crown diameter) at 18 months. Plants maintained which were shrubby in nature and the survived plants were estimated for total biomass production ranging from 13kg in T3 and T5 treatments with 5.6 and 6.7 kg leaf mass respectively. Performance of A. bivenosa was better than A. ampliceps. It maintained 86.9% mean survival at 18 months and 40.5% at 48 months ranging from 66.1% in T2 and 22.2% in control. Treatments influenced the biomass yield and all the treatments recorded higher biomass as compared to control (3.43 kg) at 36 months of age in case of A. bivenosa. Maximum (12.68 kg tree-1) biomass yield was obtained in T3 (wheat straw) treatment followed by in treatment T2 (10.22 kg tree-1). Both the species flowered and produced viable seed. Natural germination ofA. ampliceps was observed. They did not suppress the native vegetation, thus have potential to be introduced as fodder species

    Harnessing the value addition and nutraceutical potential of date fruits

    An investigation to harness the potentialities of date fruit to analyze Zahidi (Yellow coloured) and Khuneizi (Red coloured) varieties of date palm fruit was carried out. Date powder of fresh date fruits (doka stage) was developed in form of primary processed product. Value addition of date powder in terms of baked products was found to be organoleptically highly acceptable. The assessment regarding nutraceutical contents of date powder revealed a significant amount of flavonoids (88.26-92.00 CEQ/100g), total phenolic content (468.51- 427.66 mg GAE/100g) and total antioxidant activity by FRAP assay (1227.89- 1071.60 μ mol FRAP/100g). Khuneizi variety had significantly higher (p<.05) flavonoid, phenols and antioxidant activity as compared to Zahidi variety. A strong significant correlation was observed among flavonoids, phenols and antioxidant activity. Thus, date fruits in powdered form have a great potential in baking as well as functional food owing to its nutraceutical contents

    Environmental knowledge gives elemental practices and optimum utilization of resources. This gives a balanced surrounding with fulfillment of growing needs. This helps in repletion process. Gender based studies conducted have failed to reach a common conclusion. Hence this study was conducted to compare and measure the environmental knowledge of boys and girls. The city of Bikaner, Rajasthan was selected because it is located on the fringe of Thar desert making environment a very vital issue for the survival of the town. The study was conducted on youths of age group 14 to 20. Primary data was collected using pre-tested questionnaire. The study covered various aspects of environmental topics such as water, transportation, trees, air and global warming. To analyze difference in knowledge level of genders, chi-square or z-test were applied. Environmental knowledge index was calculated using cumulative scores and index number formula. The students were quite divided in their opinion on questions related to environmental topics such as water, transportation, trees and air. Some issues of the above mentioned topics raised no difference among the knowledge level of boys and girls where as in others differences crept. No significant differences in knowledge level of genders on global warming were observed. However, combined result showed girls seemed to possess more knowledge level with environmental knowledge index of 52.19 than boys of the same age group with a difference of 4.26.     Youths are effected by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors, however parents have major influence on them. Awareness about environment can make them live a better life with a better life style. As per fieldwork conducted one observation was that elders act as de-motivating force for extra-curricular activities and rather want youths to focus on study. Hence, environmental initiatives are discouraged in youths. This study was conducted for analyzing the effect of father’s qualification on boy’s awareness. Sample was collected from secondary school students of age group 14 to 20 from Bikaner city of Rajasthan. Primary data was collected using questionnaire method. Awareness was measured on the environmental issues such as water, light, L.P.G., fuel, air, tree, plastic and global warming. Boys were divided as per father’s qualification into following categories- (1). Not educated, (2). Till 8th class, (3) 9th to 12th class and (4) Graduation and above. Chi-square or z-test was used for analysis at significance level 0.05 for testing two-tailed hypothesis. Results depicted that the difference in the awareness level of boys about various environmental issues with difference in father’s qualification was not significant. Hence, it may be concluded that there is no effect of father’s qualification on boy’s awareness. However there is impact of father’s qualification on overall awareness level of boys. It means it is not necessary that impact of father’s qualification can be seen on one, two or few questions however when overall awareness level is calculated impact of father’s qualification can be seen on boy’s awareness. Parents are concerned about education however other dimensions too need to be developed in youths like awareness about environment so that they could lead an efficient healthy life mutually beneficial for man and nature

    Ascertaining hybridity of progenies in mango (Mangifera indica L.) using microsatellite (SSR) markers

    In the present study (2012-13& 2013-14) seven mango genotypes viz., Amrapali, Dushehari, Janardan Pasand, Neelam, Pusa Arunima, Sensation and Tommy Atkins were used for obtaining hybrid plantlets. Artificial hybridization was attempted using Amrapali as female and Dushehari, Janardan Pasand, Neelam, Pusa Arunima, Sensation and Tommy Atkins as male donor parent and the recovery of the hybrids was very low. Fourty-two microsatellite markers (SSRs) among seven mango parental genotypes were validated against mango plantlets obtained from the crosses Amrapali x Dashehari, Amrapali x Janardan Pasand, Amrapali x Neelam, Amrapali x Pusa Arunima, Amrapali x Sensation and Amrapali x Tommy Atkins. Fourty- two primer pairs were screened, 13 primer pairs (LMMA 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 16 and ESTD 1, 2, 9 and 10) were found polymorphic and utilized for ascertaining hybridity of progenies obtained from seven mango parental genotypes. Out of 13 polymorphic primers, only 3 primer pairs (LMMA 11, ESTD 9 and ESTD 10) could confirm the hybridity of progenies in different cross combinations

    Tolerance and accumulation of lead by fenugreek

    In the present study, the response of fenugreek (Trigonella foenumgraceum L.) along with remediation potential was tested against lead (Pb). A pot trial was set up in order to evaluate remediation efficiency of T. foenumgraceum. Growth parameters and remediation potential of fenugreek against different concentrations of Pb was compared. Different physical parameters were studied. Biochemical parameters like chlorophyll content, soluble protein, total soluble sugar and proline were analyzed. The results showed that fenugreek accumulated Pb and translocated it in the harvestable parts of the plants. Metal accumulation increased consistently with increasing concentration of Pb in the treatments. Dry matter yield of plant increased with decreasing Pb concentration in the treatment. In conclusion, fenugreek can be used for remediation of Pb contaminated soil
