Comparative study of physicochemical parameters of groundwater and surface water of rawatsar, Hanumangarh (Rajasthan)
A study on the comparison of surface water and groundwater quality in Rawatsar Tehsil of Hanumangarh district (Rajasthan) was carried out. Different sites were selected for analysis of groundwater and surface water. Physicochemical parameters of water such as pH, EC, TDS, Turbidity, Alkalinity, Chloride, DO, COD, Na and K were analyzed using standard methods for all the samples. It was found that pH and EC were within the BIS permissible limit. All water samples have chloride content more than BIS standard values, showing the dominance of chloride ions in the study area. From the present study, surface water and groundwater samples have higher turbidity and high content of total dissolved solids, alkalinity, chloride, sodium and potassium. Groundwater dominates chloride, carbonate, sodium and potassium ions. Hence, surface water and groundwater need to be treated before end-use. This preliminary study needs to be researched further for a better understanding of hydrogeochemistry of groundwater and chemistry of surface water in Rawatsar
Effect of different nutrient formulations on growth and yield of Cordyline fruticosa grown in soilless culture system
Cut foliages are an important component of the floricultural industry, largely used in decoration as filler in floral compositions. They provide freshness, colour and variety to arrangements and bouquets. Cordyline fruticosa is an important cut green in the world trade and used worldwide for its beautiful foliage.The increasing demand for the production of quality cut foliages pressurizes the flower growers to adopt advanced technologies even under poor resource conditions. Soilless culture is one such production system that involves precise control of nutrition and efficient use of water, which in turn resulted in quality produce commanding premium price in the market. Owing to the above demand, the present investigation was carried out during 2017-18 at Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam to determine the effect of different nutrient formulations on growth and yield of Cordyline fruticosa grown in soilless culture system. Eight nutrient formulations were tested for its efficacy along with rain water as control and observations on growth and yield parameters were recorded. The results of the study revealed that Hoagland and Arnon- nutrient formulation increased growth and yield parameters of Cordyline fruticosa grown in soilless culture system
Validations of pheromone trap designs for the management of brinjal shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis (Crambidae: Lepidoptera)
The brinjal shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis is the most noxious and destructive pest of brinjal and widely distributed in South Asian countries. The yield loss up to 80% was recorded in brinjal cultivation by the infestation of L. orbonalis. Two different studies were conducted in farmer’s field at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India during Rabi 2017 to evaluate the efficacy of 1) Trap designs 2) Trap errection height. The comparison made on moth retention pattern of commercial Traps and indigenous bottle trap, indicated a significantly different between trap designs. Maximum mean number of moth catches was recorded in Indigenous bottle trap (1.937 moths/ day/ trap). Among the trap heights tested, trap placed at crop canopy level attracted maximum moths (3.54 moths/3 trap/day). Trap moth catch was superior in indigenous trap placed at crop canopy level
Evaluation of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) genotypes for yield and curcumin content
Evaluation of genotypes for existing variability and to create variability among genotypes is a vital step, to start fresh crop improvement programme. Fifty five genotypes were evaluated under augmented design with two checks viz., BSR-2 and CO-2. The study revealed that significant difference exists for all the traits studied i.e. plant height, pseudostem girth, number of tillers, number of leaves, soluble protein, weight of mother rhizomes, weight of primary rhizomes, yield, curcumin content except for total chlorophyll content. The fresh rhizome yield was maximum in genotype CL-195 (798 g) followed by CL-74 (978 g). With respect to curcumin content, CL-78 (2.79 %) was identified as line with high curcumin content. Both the factors yield and quality (Curcumin content) gets optimized in the genotypes CL-49 and CL-22
Screening of chilli genotypes for drought tolerance
Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important solanaceous crop highly susceptible to drought due its higher transpiring leaf surface, high stomatal conductance and low membrane integrity. The pot culture experiment to screen the 12 chilli genotypes for drought tolerance was conducted with two treatments with 100 % field capacity as control and 50 % field capacity as drought and screening was done on the basis of various parameters. The overall results revealed that the tolerant genotypes maintained higher level of cell membrane integrity, chlorophyll stability, osmolyte accumulation and low lipid peroxidation under drought. Among the genotypes, CA 176 showed its supremacy by maintaining higher chlorophyll content, relative water content, cell membrane integrity and lower lipid peroxidation followed by CA 183 in its performance under drought. On the other hand CA 45, CA 104 and CA 174 showed poor performance by being very sensitive to water stress with very low yield
