    Crop regulation in guava cv. Sardar as influenced by chemicals and cultural practices under semi arid conditions of Rajasthan

    A field experiment was conducted at Instrumental Farm, Department of Horticulture, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur. The experiment consisted of 8 treatments comprising chemicals (Urea @ 10% and 15% foliar spray, NAA @ 1000 ppm) and cultural practices (pruning at 75 % and 50 % intensity, bending of shoots, withholding of irrigation water) were applied during the course of investigation. These treatments were evaluated under randomized block design with 4 replications by adopting uniform cultural schedule during the experimentation. The results revealed that all treatments had significant increase in vegetative growth characteristics (number of newly emerged shoots, per cent increase in shoot growth after 30 days interval, canopy volume, PAR above and below canopy and leaf area index) physico-chemical characteristics(Fruit weight, pulp thickness, pulp: seed ratio, TSS, acidity, ascorbic acid content, total sugars and reducing sugar) and yield characteristics( per cent fruit retention, number of fruits per plant, yield per tree and yield per hectare) over the Ambe bahar and control. Among the treatments foliar spray of NAA @ 1000 ppm in the month of April (T7) significantly increase the canopy volume (371.55 m3), fruit weight (152.60 g), pulp thickness (1.13 cm), pulp seed ratio (58:90), TSS (13.80%), ascorbic acid (193.75 mg/100 gm pulp), total sugars (7.29%) and reducing sugar (4.21%) followed by application of single foliar spray of 15 per cent urea at 50 per cent bloom stage (T2). Number of fruit per plant (389.50), yield per tree (56.38 kg) estimated fruit yield (156.39 q ha-1) with higher net return (Rs.109394.88 ha-1) and B: C ratio (2.81:1) were recorded maximum in T2

    Quality of guava products (squash, RTS and jam) prepared from preserved

    This study was carried out to utilize the preserved guava pulp for preparing squash, RTS and jam and evaluate its quality (at 3 months). For this the pulp of two guava varieties (L-49 and Lalit) preserved with nine different treatments viz., potassium meta bi-sulphite 0.1% (T1), sodium benzoate 0.1% (T2), potassium meta bi-sulphite + sodium benzoate 0.05% each, sodium benzoate + potassium sorbate 0.05% (T4), potassium meta bi-sulphite + potassium sorbate 0.05% each (T5), potassium sorbate 0.025% (T6), potassium sorbate 0.05% (T7), potassium sorbate 0.1% (T8) and frozen storage -200 C (T9) and replicated four times with two experimental sets under Factorial CRD. The results revealed that at the end of storage (90 days) analyzed good qualitative characters TSS, acidity, sugars, ascorbic acid, pH by in low temperature storage (-20 0C) followed by addition of potassium meta bi-sulphite 0.1% and sodium benzoate + potassium meta bi-sulphite 0.05% each.     Microbudding in bael as influenced by foliar spray of NAA and BA on rootstock and scion

    Conducted an experiment in nursery with five levels of plant growth regulators i.e., control (T1), NAA 25 % (T2), NAA 50 % (T3), BA 25 % (T4) and BA 50 % (T5) replicated thrice and selected five plants per replication under complete randomized block design. Total 75 saplings under experimentation, under this experiment, three to four months old rootstocks and 30-40 cm long scion sticks were selected for spraying different concentrations of NAA and BA at 7 days before the budding operation. The treated bud sticks were used for excision of buds for budding on treated rootstocks. Results revealed that budding operation was performed on rootstocks treated with BA 50 ppm, it was possible to produce saleable size budded saplings in relatively shorter period as compared to control i.e. within 60 days after budding

    Quantification of contribution of PSB in reducing the requirement of P fertilizer in potato production in mid hill of Himachal Predesh

    Application of 100 kg P2O5/ha (100% dose of recommended P) along with PSB inoculation gave highest tuber yield (216 q/ha) which was statistically at par with 100% P (206 q/ha). Application 100% P was statistically was at par with 75% P + PSB (203 q/ha). Higher mean of yield, phosphorus uptake, phosphorus use efficiency and apparent nutrient recovery were observed with seed inoculation with PSB as compare to without PSB. The results of this study indicated the beneficial effects of PSB inoculation on tuber yield and 11 to 18% of recommended dose of P can be saved with the seed inoculation by PSB

    Acacia ampliceps (salt wattle) is a very fast growing shrub/ small tree from northwestern Australia that has considerable promise for fodder plantings on alkaline/ saline soils, especially where its roots have access to a shallow brackish water table. A. bivenosa (two nerved wattle) makes a complex with A. ampliceps .Research trials were laid on black silty clay (medium), soil depth: 40-75 cm at Kordha, Sami Range in Patan, Gujarat at the fringe of Wild Ass Sanctuary in July 2007 to find out suitable exotic fodder plant species with appropriate planting practice. Trials were laid with control (T1), wheat husk (1/2 kg) (T2), FYM (5kg) (T3), wheat husk + FYM (T4), barley husk (250g) (T5) and FYM + barley husk (T6) treatments. Randomised block design with three replications was applied. Spacing was 4 m X 4 m for A. bivenosa (12 plants/ treatment and 3m x 3m for A. ampliceps (16 plants/ treatment). Plantation suffered badly due to heat shock during summer in 2009. The initial mean survival of A. ampliceps was 72.6 % and growth was 161.3 cm (height) and 169.5 cm (crown diameter) at 18 months. Plants maintained which were shrubby in nature and the survived plants were estimated for total biomass production ranging from 13kg in T3 and T5 treatments with 5.6 and 6.7 kg leaf mass respectively. Performance of A. bivenosa was better than A. ampliceps. It maintained 86.9% mean survival at 18 months and 40.5% at 48 months ranging from 66.1% in T2 and 22.2% in control. Treatments influenced the biomass yield and all the treatments recorded higher biomass as compared to control (3.43 kg) at 36 months of age in case of A. bivenosa. Maximum (12.68 kg tree-1) biomass yield was obtained in T3 (wheat straw) treatment followed by in treatment T2 (10.22 kg tree-1). Both the species flowered and produced viable seed. Natural germination ofA. ampliceps was observed. They did not suppress the native vegetation, thus have potential to be introduced as fodder species

    Ascertaining hybridity of progenies in mango (Mangifera indica L.) using microsatellite (SSR) markers

    In the present study (2012-13& 2013-14) seven mango genotypes viz., Amrapali, Dushehari, Janardan Pasand, Neelam, Pusa Arunima, Sensation and Tommy Atkins were used for obtaining hybrid plantlets. Artificial hybridization was attempted using Amrapali as female and Dushehari, Janardan Pasand, Neelam, Pusa Arunima, Sensation and Tommy Atkins as male donor parent and the recovery of the hybrids was very low. Fourty-two microsatellite markers (SSRs) among seven mango parental genotypes were validated against mango plantlets obtained from the crosses Amrapali x Dashehari, Amrapali x Janardan Pasand, Amrapali x Neelam, Amrapali x Pusa Arunima, Amrapali x Sensation and Amrapali x Tommy Atkins. Fourty- two primer pairs were screened, 13 primer pairs (LMMA 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 16 and ESTD 1, 2, 9 and 10) were found polymorphic and utilized for ascertaining hybridity of progenies obtained from seven mango parental genotypes. Out of 13 polymorphic primers, only 3 primer pairs (LMMA 11, ESTD 9 and ESTD 10) could confirm the hybridity of progenies in different cross combinations

    Tolerance and accumulation of lead by fenugreek

    In the present study, the response of fenugreek (Trigonella foenumgraceum L.) along with remediation potential was tested against lead (Pb). A pot trial was set up in order to evaluate remediation efficiency of T. foenumgraceum. Growth parameters and remediation potential of fenugreek against different concentrations of Pb was compared. Different physical parameters were studied. Biochemical parameters like chlorophyll content, soluble protein, total soluble sugar and proline were analyzed. The results showed that fenugreek accumulated Pb and translocated it in the harvestable parts of the plants. Metal accumulation increased consistently with increasing concentration of Pb in the treatments. Dry matter yield of plant increased with decreasing Pb concentration in the treatment. In conclusion, fenugreek can be used for remediation of Pb contaminated soil

    The Thar Desert is a desolated vast sandy stretch of inhospitable landscape. The ecology of this desert is characterized by harsh climatic conditions. For harnessing the harsh desert conditions, water is the most important component. To overcome adverse climatic conditions, the Sirhind Feeder was conceived in this region. Rotifers are one of the most important constituents of zooplankton community in fresh water ecosystem. These minute and delicate animals comprise an integral part in the aquatic food chain. Rotifers are hardy enough to tolerate extreme environmental conditions, features that place them in the class of best bioindicators of water quality. Present study was made to explore the diversity, density and ecology of rotifer fauna in sadul branch of Sirhind Feeder in Hanumangarh (29o5' to 30o6' north latitude and 74o3' to 75o3' east longitudes). The observations were made for a period of six months (January 2014 to June 2014). Physico-chemical conditions revealed that canal was shallow with turbid, well oxygenated, alkaline, hard and saline water. The study revealed the occurrence of seven species of rotifers represented by Keratella vulga, Keratella cochlearis, Brachionus bidentata, Brachionus calyciflorus, Filinia longiseta, Monostyla lunaris and Monostyla quadridentata. Rotifers were noted as peak population during the month of April (290 No./l)

    Effect of supplementary feeding on productive and reproductive performance of milch buffalo and feed economics under field conditions in Panchmahal district of Central Gujarat

    Average milk yield recorded during the study was period 5.42±0.43, 6.43±0.57 and 6.67±0.39 litre per day in T1, T2 and T3 groups, respectively. The results indicated that the buffaloes supplemented with mineral mixture and common salt produced 23.06 per cent more milk as compared to control without any adverse affect on the body weight and health of the animals. The increase in milk yield was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the animals of supplemented group as compared to control. The results of study revealed that 16.38 per cent reduction in cost milk production per litre in buffalo were due to the supplementation of mineral mixture and common salt under of hot semi-arid ecosystem. The supplementation of mineral mixture and common salt during experimental period indicates that benefit cost ratio 1:2.24 was recorded, which appears to be very lucrative over traditional system of feeding.  Based on observations, it can be concluded that supplementary feeding of mineral mixture and common salt economically improved the milk production and reproductive performance of buffaloes under hot semi-arid ecosyste

    Pest scenario of ber ( Ziziphus mauritianaLam.) in arid regions of Rajasthan: a review

    Indian jujube known as ber (Ziziphus mauritiana Lam.) is an extremely drought hardy and native fruit of India. However, the quality of fruits and productivity is not obtainable up to the standard. One of the reasons for it is infestation of insect pests on the vegetative as well as developing fruits, which ultimately leads to significant yield loss and quality attributes of the fruits. Though as many as 130 species of insect pests have been recorded in India, only few species have attained the pest status and cause substantial economic damage to ber. A total of 12 insect-pests infesting on ber have been recorded from hot arid region of Rajasthan. Out of these, three insects viz., Ber fruit fly (Carpomyia vesuviana Costa), fruit borer (Meridarchis scyrodes) and stone weevil (Aubeus himalayanus Voss) were recorded as major pests with high infestation rate, whereas two insects (Ber butter fly, Tarucus theophrastus (Fabricius) and thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis (Hood)) were recorded as moderate pests. As many as seven insect pests viz., grey weevil, Myllocerus dentifer (Fabricius), M. blandus Faust, Amblyrrhinus poricollis Schoenherr; leaf webber, Synclera univocolis; ber mite, Larvacarus transitans, bark eating caterpillars, Indarbela sp and termite, Odontotermes sp were recorded as minor pests. The incidence of fruit fly (C. vesuviana), fruit borer (M. scyrodes) and stone weevil (A. himalayanus) were recorded on ber from October to February. The fruit fly infests most of the Ziziphus species grown in the world and cause severe yield loss up to 80% or even more. The average percent incidence of stone weevil, A. himalayanus was observed between 13.00 to 64.00 in fallen fruits and 12.00 to 59.33 on attached fruits of ber. The seasonal incidence of fruit borer, M. scyrodes attained its peak in the second fortnight of December (58.33%) in ber crop. The leaf feeder’s viz., ber butterfly, leaf webber, mite, thrips and grey weevils were more active during June to September
