Sensors-on-flapping-wings (SOFW) using complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) MEMS technology

    No full text
This article presents a framework of using MEMS sensors to investigate unsteady flow speeds of a flapping wing or the new concept of sensors on flapping wings (SOFWs). Based on the implemented self-heating flow sensor using U18 complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) MEMS foundry provided by the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), the compact sensing region of the flow sensor was incorporated for in situ diagnostics of biomimetic flapping issues. The sensitivity of the CMOS MEMS flow sensor, packaged with a parylene coating of 10 μm thick to prolong the lifetime, was observed as −3.24 mV/V/(m/s), which was below the flow speed of 6 m/s. A comprehensive investigation was conducted on integrating CMOS MEMS flow sensors on the leading edge of the mean aerodynamic chord (m.a.c.) of the flexible 70-cm-span flapping wings. The interpreted flow speed signals were checked and demonstrated similar behavior with the (net) thrust force exerted on the flapping wing, as measured in the wind tunnel experiments using the force gauge. The experimental results confirm that the in situ measurements using the concept of SOFWs can be useful for measuring the aerodynamic forces of flapping wings effectively, and it can also serve for future potential applications.

ESG Disclosure Frequency and Its Association with Market Performance: Evidence from Taiwan

    No full text
This study challenges the conventional wisdom that investor reactions to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) information are primarily driven by disclosure sentiment. We propose and test an alternative hypothesis: that for investors navigating information-rich environments, the frequency of ESG disclosures can serve as a more potent signal of a firm’s underlying commitment and risk profile than the sentiment of the announcements themselves. Focusing on Taiwan’s capital market—a globally pivotal technology hub—we analyze 2576 firm-initiated ESG events from 2014 to 2023 using an event study methodology. We innovate by employing a BERT-based NLP model, specifically fine-tuned for Traditional Chinese, to disentangle the effects of disclosure frequency from sentiment. Our results reveal that announcement frequency is a more robust predictor of abnormal returns than sentiment, but its effect is highly contingent on the ESG pillar. A higher frequency of negative Social (S) and Governance (G) disclosures incurs a significant market penalty, whereas frequent proactive Environmental (E) disclosures are rewarded. These findings establish a “disclosure frequency premium/penalty” and offer critical, nuanced insights for corporate strategy and sustainable investment. By demonstrating how communication patterns shape market perceptions, this research directly informs UN SDG 12 (Responsible Production) and SDG 16 (Strong Institutions).

Does the future imagination treatment affect people's pro-environmental intention and donation decisions?

    No full text
This study investigates the impact of a future imagination treatment on individuals’ pro-environmental intentions and donation behaviors, utilizing the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a framework. A total of 442 students from National Chengchi University participated in the research, which involved an experimental group that envisioned living conditions in the year 2100 and a control group. Employing seemingly unrelated regressions and a three-stage least squares model, we analyzed the donation decisions in the context of a dictator game (Camerer in Behavioral Game Theory: Experiments in Strategic Interaction, Princeton University Press, 2011). The results revealed that the imaginary-trip-to-the-future treatment did not significantly impact pro-environmental donations. However, individuals’ intentions to mitigate climate change were positively correlated with their decisions to contribute to climate change initiatives. Additionally, key factors such as attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and futurability were found to significantly influence these intentions, highlighting the intergenerational sustainability dilemma. These findings enhance our understanding of the complexities surrounding pro-environmental behavior and suggest potential avenues for future research aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

    No full text

Roles of ownership structure and investment opportunities in directing internal capital allocation within groups

    No full text
By employing regression analyses on matched samples formed by propensity score matching to investigate the factors driving internal capital allocation decisions, this study reveals a negative relationship between net capital inflows via related-party borrowing and sales, implying that resources within groups are circulated rather than allocated in a unidirectional way. After controlling for net capital inflows via related-party sales (borrowing) and other covariates within each year and industry, we find that the negative relationship between profitability and net capital inflows via related-party borrowing is concentrated among the firms in which controlling shareholders have large ownership and a high level of corporate control in terms of voting rights and board control. These findings suggest that the linkage between controlling shareholders’ private benefits and firms and controlling shareholders’ influence on managerial decisions drives the coinsurance or cross-subsidization function of internal capital markets within groups.
