    Discovery of bioactive compounds with anti‑alzheimer potential from Aralia armata via integrated phytochemical, enzymatic, and computational analyses

    Aralia armata, a medicinal plant traditionally used in Asia, has attracted increasing attention for its diverse pharmacological properties, primarily attributed to triterpenoid saponins. However, its potential antioxidant, enzyme-inhibitory, and antimicrobial activities remain poorly explored, and systematic phytochemical profiling beyond saponins is lacking. The present study provides the first comprehensive evaluation of the bioactivities and chemical composition of A. armata extracts, with a focus on the ethanol leaf extract (EtOH-L). EtOH-L exhibited the strongest enzyme inhibitory effects among eight tested extracts, particularly against acetylcholinesterase (IC50: 564.36 μg/mL) and butyrylcholinesterase (IC50: 17.62 μg/mL), showing potency close to berberine chloride, the positive control. Antioxidant assays further demonstrated remarkable radical scavenging capacity, with EtOH-L outperforming Trolox in DPPH (IC50: 43.098 μg/mL vs. 58.618 μg/mL) and showing near-equivalent activity in ABTS assays. Strong antibacterial activity was also observed, with EtOH-L and EA-L producing inhibition zones (≈ 29 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, comparable to clinical antibiotics. Phytochemical analyses identified high levels of flavonoids such as myricetin and quercetin, as well as volatile constituents dominated by azafrin methyl ester (75.32%) and 10-deacetylbaccatin III (22.66%). Molecular docking and ADME predictions revealed favorable binding affinities of key phytochemicals toward cholinesterases, along with gastrointestinal absorption and blood–brain barrier penetration, supporting their potential as anti-Alzheimer drug candidates. Collectively, these findings establish A. armata as a novel and rich source of bioactive compounds, expanding its pharmacological profile and highlighting its promise for therapeutic and functional applications.補正完畢US

    帕拉運動中的公平競賽基於科學與可靠的分級制度,確保運動員在競賽中能以天賦、訓練和心理因素為成功關鍵,而非受損程度。本文透過文獻綜述探討徒手肌力測試(manual muscle testing, MMT)作為射箭輪椅運動員分級工具的應用與挑戰。現行分級系統結合國際帕拉林匹克委員會(IPC)和世界射箭總會(WA)的標準,採用走DW和KM徒手肌力測試標準程序輔以改良版Ashworth量表評估運動員的肌力與功能。然而,研究顯示此測試的可靠性與一致性會受到測試者經驗、文化背景及測試方法標準化的影響。此外,傳統的MMT評分系統無法全面反映低強度持續收縮特性的姿勢張力,亦未能準確評估運動員在比賽中的動態功能表現。建議未來分級制度應採融入科技輔助評估工具,提升分級檢測者的訓練水準及改善文化差異的影響。同時,應建立帕拉射箭運動員的分級數據庫以增進分級決策的科學性與公平性。此舉不僅有助於促進帕拉射箭運動的發展,亦能進一步保障運動員的參賽權益。補正完畢TW

    The impact of co‑exposure to air and noise pollution on the incidence of metabolic syndrome from a health checkup cohort

    Previous studies have found associations between the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and exposure to air pollution or road traffic noise. However, investigations on environmental co-exposures are limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between co-exposure to air pollution and road traffic noise and MetS and its subcomponents. Participants living in Taipei City who underwent at least two health checkups between 2010 and 2016 were included in the study. Data were sourced from the MJ Health database, a longitudinal, large-scale cohort in Taiwan. The monthly traffic noise exposure (Lden and Lnight) was computed using a dynamic noise map. Monthly fine particulate data at one kilometer resolution were computed from satellite imagery data. Cox proportional hazards regression models with month as the underlying time scale were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for the impact of PM2.5 and road traffic noise exposure on the risk of developing MetS or its subcomponents. Data from 10,773 participants were included. We found significant positive associations between incident MetS and PM2.5 (HR: 1.88; 95% CI 1.67, 2.12), Lden (HR: 1.10; 95% CI 1.06, 1.15), and Lnight (HR: 1.07; 95% CI 1.02, 1.13) in single exposure models. Results further showed significant associations with an elevated risk of incident MetS in co-exposure models, with HRs of 1.91 (95% CI 1.69, 2.16) and 1.11 (95% CI 1.06, 1.16) for co-exposure to PM2.5 and Lden, and 1.90 (95% CI 1.68, 2.14) and 1.08 (95% CI 1.02, 1.13) for co-exposure to PM2.5 and Lnight. The HRs for the co-exposure models were higher than those for models with only a single exposure. This study provides evidence that PM2.5 and noise exposure may elevate the risk of incident MetS and its components in both single and co-exposure models. Therefore, preventive approaches to mitigate the risk of MetS and its subcomponents should consider reducing exposure to PM2.5 and noise pollution.補正完畢DE

    Detecting spatio-temporal hotspots of scarlet fever in Taiwan with spatio-temporal Gi* statistic

    A resurgence of scarlet fever has caused many pediatric infections in East Asia and the United Kingdom. Although scarlet fever in Taiwan has not been a notifiable infectious disease since 2007, the comprehensive national health insurance data can still track its trend. Here, we used data from the open data portal of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control. The scarlet fever trend was measured by outpatient and hospitalization rates from 2009 to 2017. In order to elucidate the spatio-temporal hotspots, we developed a new method named the spatio-temporal Gi* statistic, and applied Joinpoint regression to compute the annual percentage change (APC). The overall APCs in outpatient and hospitalization were 15.1% (95% CI: 10.3%-20.2%) and 7.7% (95%CI: 4.5% -10.9%). The major two infected groups were children aged 5–9 (outpatient: 0.138 scarlet fever diagnoses per 1,000 visits; inpatient: 2.579 per 1,000 visits) and aged 3–4 (outpatient: 0.084 per 1,000 visits; inpatient: 1.469 per 1,000 visits). We found the counties in eastern Taiwan and offshore counties had the most hotspots in the outpatient setting. In terms of hospitalization, the hotspots mostly occurred in offshore counties close to China. With the help of the spatio-temporal statistic, health workers can set up enhanced laboratory surveillance in those hotspots.補正完畢US

    Developing a new prevention model for pediatric respiratory infection

    Pediatric infections are often closely linked to infections in families, schools, and communities, illustrating the importance of developing a holistic model of pediatric respiratory infection prevention. Research purposes were to construct a new preventive model for pediatric respiratory infection prevention and to clarify the relationships among impact factors in this model. Research method was a cross-sectional survey. A structured questionnaire was used to measure model variables, including “parental prevention measures (PPM),” “concern about pediatric vaccination (CPV),” “school precautionary measures (SPM),” and “children’s self-protection practices (CSPP).” Structural equation modeling analysis was performed to test four proposed hypotheses and identify the relationships among these variables. Research participants were 2420 parents with one or more 3-16-yearold children. Results identified five paths in research model. (1) “Parental prevention measures, PPM” directly affects “concerns about pediatric vaccination, CPV” [direct effect: 0.354], “school precautionary measures, SPM” [direct effect: 0.354], and “children’s self-protection practices, CSPP” [direct effect: 0.354]. (2) PPM affects CPV through the mediating effect of SPM (indirect effect: 0.04), resulting in a total effect of 0.394. (3) PPM affects CSPP through the mediating effect of SPM (indirect effect: 0.3), resulting in a total effect of 0.655. All these effects were statistically significant. Results strongly suggested that coordinating prevention strategies between families and schoolteachers is most effective in equipping children with the knowledge and behaviors to avoid infectious disease. Results confirmed that the newly constructed model for preventing pediatric respiratory infection was well fitted as a double mediation model. Further studies are needed to pursue the family-school health education model in the prevention of pediatric infectious disease.補正完畢US

    The Motivation of Consumer Participation on Circular Economy and the Effect to Value Creation

    The circular economy can no longer be ignored as a viable business model in today's world, especially with the continued depletion of the Earth's resources. The rise of renewable energy and development of innovative new materials and technologies have created new possibilities for circular production solutions. They are also promoting a shift from a traditional linear system in which goods are produced, used and discarded to a circular system that involves reusing, remanufacturing and recycling materials. Empirical research rarely studies the motivations and intentions of consumers in participating in a circular economy, and their effect on such participation. This study fills that gap by investigating why people might want to participate in circular economy using self-determination theory (SDT) as a basis for understanding consumers' extrinsic and intrinsic motivations. We identified accessibility to be an important moderator of customer participation, given that the focus of the circular economy is on the use of a function rather than on consumption. To further understand these different motivations and the effect of accessibility, we used the Delphi Method to confirm the different outcomes. The results should provide marketers guidance on what their focus should be in the circular economy era.補正完畢TW
