Critical IT Project Management Competencies: Aligning Instructional Outcomes with Industry Expectations
Academic computing curricula generally focus on teaching the specific technological skills expected of new graduates in their disciplines. Yet when it comes to hiring these graduates, behavioral skills (also called soft skills) such as communication and personal integrity are almost always rated as being more important than the technological skills. This mixed-method research project adds to the understanding of skill expectations required for new hires by providing information from a global sample of project management professionals. Both the quantitative and qualitative results are in accord with the vast majority of the extant literature in that behavioral skills were seen as more critical than technical skills. Implications and recommendations for educators, curriculum developers, and prospective graduates are discussed
A Virtual Supply Chain System for Improved Information Sharing and Decision Making
Integrated supply chain information systems (ISCIS) face various barriers including lack of alignment between IT and business model, security and privacy concerns, behavioral and cultural issues, and heterogeneous software applications. This paper develops an architecture for ISCIS and validate it by interviewing experts. The proposed architecture is an intermediary to integrate in-house information systems as well as cloud-based systems across distributed heterogeneous supply chain networks. A Question of Trust: Functions and Effects of Transmedia Journalism
Narrative forms of journalistic reporting are traded as a sheet anchor in many newsrooms, as editors hope that they could brave the never-ending storm of the media crisis. But how does journalistic storytelling evolve from analog to digital? What are the potentials of narrative journalism across multiple media types and platforms? And what effects do such transmedia narratives have on media users? These questions are answered based on a multi-method research design, which includes both an explorative communicator study and an experiment with users. The investigation demonstrates that journalists expect narratives in digital media surroundings to invigorate the authenticity and comprehensibility of their coverage. This hope, however, only partly becomes a reality on the side of the recipients. Indeed, users judge multimedia online reportages to be more emotional than monomedia offline pieces, but as far as remembering and comprehending their contents is concerned, print texts are more effective
Associations of Subjective Immersion, Immersion Subfactors, and Learning Outcomes in the Revised Game Engagement Model
Serious Educational Video Games (SEGs) play a large role in education for both children and adults. However, the budget for SEGs is typically lower than traditional entertainment video games, bringing with it the need to optimize the learning experience. This article looks at the role game immersion plays in improving learning outcomes, using the Revised Game Engagement Model (R-GEM) to determine whether learning outcomes were associated specifically with Immersion itself, or with the various prerequisites to achieving immersion. A sample of 125 undergraduate university students which played an educational video game and were assessed on Immersion, subjective System Usability, Creative Imagination, and learning performance. Immersion and System Usability were shown to be associated with higher learning outcomes, but, after controlling for other factors, it seems that System Usability is only helpful inasmuch as it promotes Immersion. This article concludes that further study is needed to determine whether the same association can be found with different populations and with different types of learning
Improving Auto-Detection of Phishing Websites using Fresh-Phish Framework
Denizens of the Internet are under a barrage of phishing attacks of increasing frequency and sophistication. Emails accompanied by authentic looking websites are ensnaring users who, unwittingly, hand over their credentials compromising both their privacy and security. Methods such as the blacklisting of these phishing websites become untenable and cannot keep pace with the explosion of fake sites. Detection of nefarious websites must become automated and be able to adapt to this ever-evolving form of social engineering. There is an improved framework that was previously implemented called “Fresh-Phish”, for creating current machine-learning data for phishing websites. The improved framework uses a total of 28 different website features that query using python, then a large labeled dataset is built and analyze over several machine learning classifiers against this dataset to determine which is the most accurate. This modified framework improves the accuracy of modeling those features by using integer rather than binary values where possible. This article analyzes not just the accuracy of the technique, but also how long it takes to train the model
Combined Assessment of Software Safety and Security Requirements: An Industrial Evaluation of the CHASSIS Method
Safety is a fundamental concern in modern society, and security is a precondition for safety. Ensuring safety and security of complex integrated systems requires a coordinated approach that involve different stakeholder groups going beyond safety and security experts and system developers. The authors have therefore proposed CHASSIS (Combined Harm Assessment of Safety and Security for Information Systems), a method for collaborative determination of requirements for safe and secure systems. In this article, the authors evaluate CHASSIS through industrial case studies of two small-to-medium sized suppliers to the air-traffic management (ATM) sector. The results suggest that CHASSIS is easy to use, and that handling safety and security together provides benefits because techniques, information, and knowledge can be reused. The authors conclude that further exploration and development of CHASSIS is worthwhile, but that better documentation is needed—including more detailed process guidelines—to support elicitation of security and safety requirements and to systematically relate them to functional requirements
Mining Smart Meter Data: Opportunities and Challenges
Metering side of electricity distribution system has been one of the prime focus of industry and academia both. The most recent advancement in this field is installation of smart meters. The installation of smart meters enables collection of massive amounts of data regarding electricity generation and consumption. The analysis of this data could help generate actionable insights for the supply side and provide the consumers demand management-related inputs. The problem addressed in this chapter is to identify suitable data mining algorithm for applications like: estimating the demand and supply of electricity, user and use profiling of commercial, and industrial customers, and variables suitable for these purposes. This chapter, on the basis of rigorous literature review, presents a taxonomy of smart meter data mining. It includes the summary of application of smart meter data analytics, characteristics of dataset used, and smart meter business globally. This chapter could help researchers identify potential research opportunities, and practitioners can use it for planning and designing a smart electricity system
The Fall of the Fourth Wall: Designing and Evaluating Interactive Spectator Experiences
Over the past several years, the live-streaming of digital games has experienced a vast increase in popularity, coinciding with the rise of eSports as an entertainment medium. For a rapidly growing audience, streamed content provides material from an ever-increasing roster of games, tournaments, and special events. Recently, streaming platforms, game developers, and professional players have experimented with the inclusion of viewer interaction through mechanisms such as chat, broadcast messages, donations, and voting systems. With the advent of these mechanisms, the concept of game viewership has entered a transitory period; while still largely focused on consumption, for many spectators, the viewing experience is no longer an entirely passive act. The idea of interactive spectatorship (the authors refer to it as Spectator-players) carries the potential for audience members to engage with content at a much deeper level, participating actively in a novel form of entertainment and contributing to an enriched gaming community. This novel form of gaming interaction poses interesting challenges for game designers, as it requires design considerations to meet the needs of players, passive viewers, and active audience members alike. In this paper, the authors examine the opportunities and challenges presented by the design of interactive spectator experiences. Ultimately, they propose a series of design guidelines aimed at the exploration of development in the area of interactive spectator experiences
Addressing Sustainability of Sanitation Systems: Can it be Standardized?
Recently, a technical draft of the international standard ISO/DIS 30500 for non-sewered sanitation systems has been developed (publication expected for 2018). Its innovative feature is the inclusion of sustainable aspects. This article discusses the motivation behind this standard and explores to what extent sustainability can be standardized. This research was based on the development of a concept-standard for sustainable sanitation and on surveys of experts working in sanitation and standardization
A Privacy Perspective of Open Government: Sex, Wealth, and Transparency in China
Open government and freedom of information are key values in today's democracy, rule of law, and public governance. Their further development may have to be equally taken into consideration with other important public interests, such as state secret, public security, and other individual rights including reputation and privacy. In particular, there is the need to consider how individual privacy can be protected in the digital era in which both the concept and practice of open government may claim more territory. Taking China as an example, this chapter tries to reveal the complex, dynamic relationship between open government (transparency) and privacy protection, in particular by studying two specific privacy-related issues: the disclosure of official's public interest-related private life and the disclosure of family asset. In the sense that they can be regarded as the benchmarks to measure the level of open government and FOI development in a community, both can reflect the cultural and political complexities that affect such developments
