    Situated Learning Meets Community Needs: Anatomy of a Community-Based Learning Project on Chicago's West Side

    This chapter describes a community-based learning project (CbLP) in the Chicago West Side community of Austin. This learning setting provided the context for applying instructional strategies, methods, and techniques that are grounded in principles of social-situational learning and competence-based education and the education philosophy of emancipatory or popular education. Student perceptions are presented in excerpts of their critical reflection journals and learning product samples, which were both resource contributions to the community and deliverables for assessment and evaluation of learning for students. The chapter illustrates key features of designing and facilitating learning within a civic engagement-themed CbLP

    Wearable Devices Data for Activity Prediction Using Machine Learning Algorithms

    Wearable devices are contributing heavily towards the proliferation of data and creating a rich minefield for data analytics. Recent trends in the design of wearable devices include several embedded sensors which also provide useful data for many applications. This research presents results obtained from studying human-activity related data, collected from wearable devices. The activities considered for this study were working at the computer, standing and walking, standing, walking, walking up and down the stairs, and talking while walking. The research entails the use of a portion of the data to train machine learning algorithms and build a model. The rest of the data is used as test data for predicting the activity of an individual. Details of data collection, processing, and presentation are also discussed. After studying the literature and the data sets, a Random Forest machine learning algorithm was determined to be best applicable algorithm for analyzing data from wearable devices. The software used in this research includes the R statistical package and the SensorLog app

    Recognition of Odia Handwritten Digits using Gradient based Feature Extraction Method and Clonal Selection Algorithm

    This article aims to recognize Odia handwritten digits using gradient-based feature extraction techniques and Clonal Selection Algorithm-based (CSA) multilayer artificial neural network (MANN) classifier. For the extraction of features which contribute the most towards recognition from images, are extracted using gradient-based feature extraction techniques. Principal component analysis (PCA) is used for dimensionality reduction of extracted features. A MANN is used as a classifier for classification purposes. The weights of the MANN are adjusted using the CSA to get optimized set of weights. The proposed model is applied on Odia handwritten digits taken from the Indian Statistical Institution (ISI), Calcutta, which consists of four thousand samples. The results obtained from the experiment are compared with a genetic-based multi-layer artificial neural network (GA-MANN) model. The recognition accuracy of the CSA-MANN model is found to be 90.75%

    Digital Government as Implementation Means for Sustainable Development Goals

    One of the challenges for implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the measurement of indicators that represent progress towards such goals. Measuring such progress enables data-driven decision-making and management of SDG-relevant projects and strategies. The premise of this research is that measuring such indicators depends on measuring so-called means of implementation, i.e. activities that directly contribute to the achievement of SDGs. Building on this premise, this article studies how the measurement of digital government (DG) can contribute to the measurement of SDGs. In particular, how the indicators originating in three DG measurement instruments can inform the SDG indicators. The main finding is an alignment matrix, showing how the DG indicators contribute with varying level of specificity to the measurement of 10 SDG indicators

    Digital Skill Evolution in an Industrial Relationship: Professional Figure in Online Communities

    Crowdsourcing is a powerful mechanism for doing online work and allows for collaboration. By now, in the media and in business on the Internet, crowdsourcing is recognized as an innovative form of value creation that needs taken seriously. This article provides a framework to propose the relation between crowds and tutorship; it considers the tutor of a crowd as a strategic professional figure in an online community. This is done by the consideration of the different roles, activities and tasks of a tutor through the field analysis of a platform of one company that uses crowdsourcing. This tutor is examined based on the middle-of-the-road theoretical positioned from Porter and Kramer, the value creation, and Suermann and Franzoni, the crows science user contribution patterns. The recently evolution of crowd platforms considers the interaction between companies and crowds based on a “Community of Practice” model of Zucchermaglio and Talamo. Value analysis also considers the differences in roles and tasks in relation to where crowd activity is placed into the value chain of company. In crowdsourcing, “digital people” live in a digital society where every individual has a role and operates in an online community, and those have force points and weakness points. The tutor cans also monitor these points, and push interaction and activities of the crowd. The main theoretical contribution is the looking gap in literature and contributing work to this. Through a qualitative analysis, this article provides evidence of the main activities and the role of digital tutors in an online community. The method utilized is netnography through an online participation and observation of a researcher. In this work, professional figures and new technologies are weighed, and human resource management must consider this as it creates value. This article concludes that a tutor of crowds has a positive behavior, they can stimulate crowds. These positive and active behaviors effect crowd attitudes about the benefits of the community, their expectations, and opinions all of which are fundamental for the growth of online community

    A Highly Efficient Remote Access Trojan Detection Method

    Nowadays, machine learning is popular in remote access Trojan (RAT) detection which can create patterns for decision-making. However, most research focus on improving the detection rate and reducing the false negative rate, therefore they ignore the result of abnormal samples. In addition, most classifiers select several proprietary applications and RATs as their training set, which makes them difficult to adapt to the real environment. In this article, the authors address the issue of imbalance dataset between normal and RAT samples, and propose a highly efficient method of detecting RATs in real traffic. In the authors method, they generate eight features by combining the size, the inter-arrival and the flag from one packet sequence. Then, they preprocess the imbalance dataset and implement a classifier by XGBoost algorithm. The classifier achieves a false negative rate of less than 0.18%. Moreover, the authors demonstrate that their classifier is capable of detecting unknown RAT

    Conductive and magnetic filaments are revolutionizing three-dimensional printing (3DP) to a new level. This review study presents the current state of the art on the subject, summarizing recent high impact studies about main advances regarding the application of 3DP filaments based on carbon nanostructures such as graphene, carbon fibers, nanotubes, and conductive carbon black embedded in a polymer matrix, by reviewing its main characteristics and showing the main producers and also the products available on the market. The availability of inexpensive, reliable, and electrically conductive material will be indispensable for the fabrication of circuits and sensors before the full potential of 3DP for customized products incorporating electrical elements can be fully explored

    An Empirical Study of the Role of Knowledge Characteristics and Tools on Knowledge Transfer in China-Based Multinationals

    This article describes how technology—i.e. the infrastructure of tools, systems, platforms—enhances knowledge transfer. The effect of tools on the relationship between knowledge characteristics and knowledge transfer effectiveness is under-researched. This article attempts to address the interplay of knowledge characteristics and transfer tools within multinational corporations (MNCs). Based on the structural equation modelling, this research proposes and tests a basic model that captures knowledge characteristics and transfer tools at 125 Japanese subsidiaries operating in China. Drawing on the literature, this article argues that the role of knowledge characteristics and transfer tools need to be considered for effective knowledge transfer between MNCs and their subsidiaries. Knowledge characteristics and transfer tools play differing roles in knowledge transfer. This article also extends the existing studies by focusing on knowledge characteristics and transfer tool constructs simultaneously in a model to understand the notion of knowledge transfer effectiveness in the global business context
