    Method Framework for Developing Enterprise Architecture Security Principles

    Organizations need to consider many facets of information security in their daily operations – among others, the rapidly increasing use of IT, emerging technologies and digitalization of organizations’ core resources provoke new threats that can be difficult to anticipate. It has been argued that the security and privacy considerations should be embedded in all the areas of organizational activities instead of only relying technical security mechanisms provided by the underlying systems and software. Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) offers a holistic approach for managing different dimensions of an organization, and can be conceived as a coherent and consistent set of principles that guide how the enterprise must be designed. This article contributes with a method framework for integrating information security with EAM, aimed at providing support for the decision-making related to formulating context-aware EA security principles. The presented method framework is a result of a constructive research based on both the theoretical body of knowledge and the empirical evidence, obtained by interviewing 35 Finnish EA and information security practitioners

    Method and Notation Application for Case Model Creation in the Social Sector

    Adaptive Case Management (ACM) is an approach for the management of knowledge-intensive processes. “Case Management Model and Notation” (CMMN) is an industry standard that can be used as a notation for process models in the context of ACM. However, CMMN only specifies a notation. Methods for process elicitation and management have not been well addressed by scientific investigations. This work assesses the method support and the feasibility of ACM on the example of a social care company. This company, on the one hand, represents a typical environment for ACM application and, on the other hand, contains some characteristics that are common for the social care industry. Thus, future development directions, a combined process and case approach for the social care company and an evaluation of existing and proposed methodology are provided in a qualitative way

    Selected Topics on Business Informatics: Editorial Introduction to Issue 19 of CSIMQ

    The objective of this thematic issue was twofold. The first it was to present selected research results of the 17th International Conference on Perspectives in Business Informatics Research (BIR2018) in Stockholm, Sweden, in September 24–26, 2018. The conference created a productive forum for researchers and practitioners on the specific topic – Business Resilience, with the intention of exploring organizational and information system resilience in congruence. Top papers were selected by the Program Chairs Prof. Janis Grabis and Prof. Jelena Zdravkovic to submit extended versions for a possible publication to this thematic issue. The second objective was to consider external candidate submissions for bringing attention to recent research in the Business Informatics discipline and thus make this issue even more actual. Five articles were selected that report on research in ecosystem architecture management, strategic coopetition, deriving enterprise architecture model from data, hierarchic viewpoints in control compliance assessments, and operationalizing enterprise IT architecture

    “Analyze & Focus Your Intention” as the First Step for Applying the Digital Innovation and Transformation Process in Zoos

    In many industrial domains and service sectors, digitalization efforts show first results. New kinds of products and services were introduced, which would not have been possible without end-to-end digitalization of operational processes, continuous collection and evaluation of data about product use and evaluation of customer data or activities. Facing the challenge of customer satisfaction in terms of leisure activities, zoos are in need to modernize their tours and attendances. Therefore, this article describes the application of the Digital Innovation and Transformation Process (DITP) in animal-gardening facilities, as it collects, analyzes and structures information of 19 facilities within the “Landeszooverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V.” and combines them with qualitative studies. The research aims to analyze and focus the companies’ intention for the digitization of zoos by using the first phase of the DITP. Possible business concepts, related works and best practices were gathered and are the basis for further research and applications

    Fraud Detection in Payments Transactions: Overview of Existing Approaches and Usage for Instant Payments

    Financial industries are undergoing a digital transformation of their products, services, overall business models. Part of this digitalization in banking aims at automating most of the manual work in payment handling and integrating the workflows of involved service providers. The focus of the work presented in this paper is on fraud discovery and steps to fully automate it. Fraud discovery in financial transactions has become an important priority for banks. Fraud is increasing significantly with the expansion of modern technology and global communication, which results in substantial damages for the banks. Instant payment (IP) transactions cause new challenges for fraud detection due to the requirement of short processing time. The paper investigates the possibility to use artificial intelligence in IP fraud detection. The main contributions of our work are (a) an analysis of problem relevance from business and literature perspective, (b) a proposal for technological support for using AI in fraud detection of instant payment transactions, and (c) a feasibility study of selected fraud detection approaches

    Automated Modeling with Abstraction for Enterprise Architecture (AMA4EA): Business Process Model Automation in an Industry 4.0 Laboratory

    The transformation towards the Industry 4.0 paradigm requires companies to manage large amounts of data. This poses serious challenges with regard to how effectively to handle data and extract value from it. The state-of-the-art research of Enterprise Architecture (EA) provides limited knowledge on addressing this challenge. In this article, the Automated Modeling with Abstraction for Enterprise Architecture (AMA4EA) method is proposed and demonstrated. An abstraction hierarchy is introduced by AMA4EA to support companies to automatically abstract data from enterprise systems to concepts, then to automatically create an EA model. AMA4EA was demonstrated at an Industry 4.0 laboratory. The demonstration showed that AMA4EA could abstract detailed data from the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to be relevant for a business process model that provided a useful and simplified visualization of production process data. The model communicated the detailed business data in an easily understandable way to stakeholders. AMA4EA is an innovative and novel method that contributes new knowledge to EA research. The demonstration provides sufficient evidence that AMA4EA is useful and applicable in the Industry 4.0 environment

    Using Maps to Bridge the Socio-technical Gap: A Practitioner’s Experience Report

    In my projects, devoted to the implementation of management systems, it is necessary to take into account several social and technical features and link and merge social and technical environments. To bridge the gap between these environments, maps and mapping are a useful support. In this article these topics are presented through a cluster of projects I developed in large sized companies, where exploring the context is difficult and time consuming and the relationships are structured as a complex network. I focus on the maps that describe relationships between organizational structures and IT technologies; and describe in detail two cases: a success and a failure of my socio-technical approach. The lessons learned are presented and proposed as a reflection on the socio-technical perspective

    Extending Business Process Models with Appreciation

    We use homeostasis, the maintenance of steady states in an organism, to explain some of the decisions made by participants in a business process. We use Vickers’ Appreciative System to model the homeostatic states with Harel’s statecharts. We take the example of a doctoral student recruitment process formally defined between a faculty member, a graduate student candidate and a doctoral school. We analyze some gaps in the process caused by a misfit between norms of the process participants. We present a rationale for the anticipation and resolution of these misfits. We extend the traditional operational model with an appreciative model. This model represents the appreciative systems of process participants. Understanding these appreciative systems is necessary to make explicit the misfit between the model and the observed reality. The operational model represents the “technical” perspective on the business process, the one that can be automated. The appreciative model represents the “social” perspective, the one that explains the participants’ behavior as a result of their individual and collective norms. By combining these two perspectives, we can appreciate the richness of the development of socio-technical systems
