An Efficient Interference Aware Partially Overlapping Channel Assignment and Routing in Wireless Mesh Networks

    Get PDF
In recent years, multi-channel multi-radio wireless mesh networks are considered a reliable and cost effective way for internet access in wide area. A major research challenge in this network is, selecting a least interference channel from the available channels, efficiently assigning a radio to the selected channel, and routing packets through the least interference path. Many algorithms and methods have been developed for channel assignment to maximize the network throughput using orthogonal channels. Recent research and test-bed experiments have proved that POC (Partially Overlapped Channels) based channel assignment allows significantly more flexibility in wireless spectrum sharing. In this paper, first we represent the channel assignment as a graph edge coloring problem using POC. The signal-to-noise plus interference ratio is measured to avoid interference from neighbouring transmissions, when a channel is assigned to the link. Second we propose a new routing metric called signal-to-noise plus interference ratio (SINR) value which measures interference in each link and routing algorithm works based on the interference information. The simulation results show that the channel assignment and interference aware routing algorithm, proposed in this paper, improves the network throughput and performance

A fuzzy-based QoS Maximization protocol for WiFi Multimedia (IEEE 802.11e) Ad hoc Networks

    Get PDF
The Quality of Service (QoS) management within a multiple-traffic Wi-Fi MultiMedia (WMM) ad hoc network is a tedious task, since each traffic type requires a well determined QoS-level. For this reason, the IEEE Working Group has proposed the IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol at the MAC layer of WMM ad hoc networks. However, several studies have shown that EDCA must be further improved for three main reasons. The first reason is the poor performance of EDCA under high traffic conditions due to the high collision rate. The second reason is the need to maximize the traffic performance (delay, throughput, etc.) guaranteed by EDCA, seen the rapid evolution of the applications (multimedia, real time, etc.). The third reason is the need to maximize the energy efficiency of the EDCA, seen its use in battery constrained devices (e.g. Laptop, Smart phone, Tablet computers, etc.). For these three reasons, we propose in this paper a Three-in-One solution MAC protocol called QoS Maximization of EDCA (QM-EDCA), which is an enhanced version of EDCA. Based on the fuzzy logic mathematic theory, QM-EDCA incorporates a dynamic MAC parameters fuzzy logic system, in order to adapt dynamically the Arbitration inter frame Spaces according to the network state and remaining energy. Simulation results show that QM-EDCA outperforms EDCA by reducing significantly the collision rate, and maximizing traffic performance and energy-efficiency. In addition our solution is fully distributed

A fair access mechanism based on TXOP in IEEE 802.11e wireless networks

    Get PDF
IEEE 802.11e is an extension of IEEE 802.11 that provides Quality of Service (QoS) for the applications with different service requirements. This standard makes use of several parameters such as contention window; inter frame space time and transmission opportunity to create service differentiation in the network. Transmission opportunity (TXOP), that is the focus point of this paper, is the time interval, during which a station is allowed to transmit packets without any contention. As the fixed amounts of TXOPs are allocated to different stations, unfairness appears in the network. And when users with different data rates exist, IEEE 802.11e WLANs face the lack of fairness in the network. Because the higher data rate stations transfer more data than the lower rate ones. Several mechanisms have been proposed to solve this problem by generating new TXOPs adaptive to the network's traffic condition. In this paper, some proposed mechanisms are evaluated and according to their evaluated strengths and weaknesses, a new mechanism is proposed for TXOP determination in IEEE 802.11e wireless networks. Our new algorithm considers data rate, channel error rate and data packet lengths to calculate adaptive TXOPs for the stations. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm leads to better fairness and also higher throughput and lower delays in the network.

Energy Aware Multipath Routing Protocol for Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks

    Get PDF
Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) emerged as a paradigm to solve the problem of limited spectrum availability and the spectrum underutilization in wireless networks by opportunistically exploiting portions of the spectrum temporarily vacated by licensed primary users (PUs). Routing in CRNs is a challenging problem due to the PU activities and mobility. On the other hand, energy aware routing is very important in energy-constraint CRNs. In addition, it is crucial that CR users efficiently exchange data with each other before the appearance of PUs. To design a robust routing scheme for mobile CR ad hoc networks (CRANs), the constraints on residual energy of each CR user, reliability, and the protection of PUs must additionally be taken into account. Moreover, multipath routing has great potential for improving the end-to-end performance of ad hoc networks. Considering all these evidences, in this paper, we propose an energy aware on-demand multipath routing (EOMR) protocol for mobile CRANs to ensure the robustness and to improve the throughput. The proposed routing scheme involves energy efficient multipath route selection and spectrum allocation jointly. The simulation results show that our approach improves the overall performance of the network

Optimal Cluster Head in DTN Routing Hierarchical Topology (DRHT)

In delay tolerant networking (DTN), nodes are autonomous and behave in an unpredictable way. Consequently, a control mechanism of topology is necessary. This mechanism should ensure the overall connectivity of the network taking into account nodes’ mobility. In this paper, we study the problem of data routing with an optimal delay in the bundle layer, by exploiting: the clustering, the messages ferries and the optimal election of cluster head (CH). We first introduce the DTN routing hierarchical topology (DRHT) which incorporates these three factors into the routing metric. We propose an optimal approach to elect a CH based on four criteria: the residual energy, the intra-cluster distance, the node degree and the head count of probable CHs. We proceed then to model a Markov decision process (MDP) to decide the optimal moment for sending data in order to ensure a higher delivery rate within a reasonable delay. At the end, we present the simulation results demonstrating the effectiveness of the DRHT. Our simulation shows that while using the DRHT which is based on the optimal election of CH, the traffic control during the TTL interval (Time To Live) is balanced, which greatly increases the delivery rate of bundles and decreases the loss rate

Detection of illegal traffic pattern using Hybrid Improved CART and Multiple Extreme Learning Machine Approach

    Get PDF
In the proposed hybrid intrusion detection process, misuse detection and anomaly detection model is integrated to detect the attack in traffic pattern. In misuse detection model, the traffic pattern is classified into known attack and not known attack. Each extracted normal data set does not have known attack and it contains small amount of varied connection patterns than overall normal data set. Anomaly detection model classifies the not known attack as normal data set and unknown attack thus improving the performance of normal traffic behavior. Experiment is carried out using NSL –KDD dataset and performance of proposed approach is compared with traditional learning approaches in terms of training time, testing time, false positive ratio and detection ratio. The proposed method detects the known attacks and unknown attacks with ratio of 99.8 % and 52% respectively

New Key Generation and Encryption Algorithms for Privacy Preservation in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) get widespread applications along with the evolving technologies. However, MANETs are at risk due to the shortage of security mechanisms. In this paper, we propose new algorithms for key generation and encryption for privacy preservation in MANETs. Our key generation algorithm modified Fibonacci sequence by adding scrambling factors to generate random key sequences with required length but incurred low computational overhead, whereas the encryption/decryption algorithm utilizes the One Time Pad (OTP) system by adding scrambling factors for data confidentiality which satisfies the randomness, diffusion, and confusion tests. Simulation of the proposed algorithms was conducted using Matlab and NS-2. Experiment results showed that the proposed algorithms produced random key sequences and random Ciphertexts. Through several tests i.e. speed, correlation and autocorrelation, diffusion, and confusion tests, the simulation result showed the superiority of our algorithms over the other algorithms. For the proof of concept, the proposed algorithms have been simulated in the network simulator, where the result showed that along with the increase of the number of nodes, the throughput of the network increased, while the delay is relatively constant around 6000 ms for 20 up to 70 nodes

QUANTUM PHASE SHIFT FOR ENERGY CONSERVED SECURED DATA COMMUNICATION IN MANET

    Get PDF
A Mobile Ad-Hoc Network(MANET) is a structure-less network where the mobile nodes randomly moved in any direction within the transmission range of the network. Due to this mobility, wide range of intrusion occurs in MANET. Therefore, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are significant in MANETs to identify the malicious behavior. In order to improve the secured data communication an efficient Quantum Phase Shift Energy Conserved Data Security (QPSEC-DS) technique is introduced. The Quantum Phase Shift (QPS) technique is used for ensuring the security during the data transmission from sender to receiver in MANET. Initially, the quantum based approach is used to encrypt the information using QPS at the sender through secret key distribution. The receiver side also performs the same QPS, and then the encrypted bit is received successfully. This in turns attains the secured packet transmission without any malicious node in the MANET. Based on the phase shifting, the energy conservation between the sender and receiver is measured for transmitting the data packet using QPSEC-DS technique. Also, the enhanced Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol is applied in QPSEC-DS technique is implemented to improve the energy management and secured data communication between the source and destination in an efficient manner. The QPSEC-DS technique conducts the simulations work on parameters including packet delivery ratio, energy consumption, communication overhead and end to end delay

On the Improper Use of CRC for Cryptographic Purposes in RFID Mutual Authentication Protocols

    Get PDF
Mutual authentication is essential to guarantee the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of an RFID system. One area of interest is the design of lightweight mutual authentication protocols that meet the limited computational and energy resources of the tags. These protocols use simple operations such as permutation and cyclic redundancy code for cryptographic purposes. However, these functions are cryptographically weak and are easily broken. In this work, we present a case against the use of these functions for cryptographic purposes, due to their simplicity and linear properties, by analyzing the LPCP protocol. We evaluate the claims of the LPCP resistance to de-synchronization and full disclosure attacks and show that the protocol is weak and can be easily broken by eavesdropping on a few mutual authentication sessions. This  weakness stems from the functions themselves as well as the improper use of inputs to these functions. We further offer suggestions that would help in designing more secure protocols

Quaternion-based Encryption/Decryption of Audio Signal Using Digital Image as Variable Key

    Get PDF
With the rapid growth of communication technology, cryptography plays a significant role in securing and verification of information exchanged via public communication channels.   The current paper introduces a novel method for encrypting/decrypting audio signal using a selected digital image as a complicated key and cover for audio signal.  Each sample of the audio signal is combined with the values of the three color components of a pixel fetched from the cover image yielding a quaternion number.   The absolute value of this quaternion number is then transmitted and when received, the original value of the audio sample can be extracted using simple quaternion mathematics. A second level of complexity can be added to this approach by applying one of the well-known cryptographic techniques (symmetric or asymmetric).   The suggested approach is implemented using Matlab simulation software and the generated audio signal is compared with the original one using some performance metrics.  The obtained results show that the proposed approach is robust and more secure against cryptanalysis attacks
