    Derivation of a Cropping System Transfer Function for Weed Management: Part 1 – Herbicide Weed Management

    System behaviour is described by the transfer functions, which relate the system’s output to one or more input variables. No-till cropping systems depend on herbicide inputs for weed management and crop yield optimisation. This paper derives the transfer function for crop yield potential as a function of herbicide input, in the presence of herbicide resistance in the weed population, using several mathematical components for crop and weed ecology from published literature. The resulting transfer function reveals the herbicide application rate for optimal crop yield potential and highlights the growing herbicide resistance problem in no-till cropping systems

    Structural Evolution Properties of Cu-25 wt %Sn Alloy During Ball Milling

    In the present study, Cu-25 wt %Sn alloy samples were prepared by the mechanical alloying process using planetary high-energy ball mill. The alloy formation and different physical properties associated with their formations were investigated as a function of milling times of 0, 10, 20, 70, 80, 100, 120, 150 and 200 h by means of the x-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). After milling time of 80 h, the complete formation of martensite transformation is observed. When milling time increases from 70 to 120 h, the grain size decreases from 20.8 to 8.6 nm, while the strain increases from 4.73 % to 7.59 %. It is inferred that the martensite volume fraction increases from 30 to 55 % when milling time increases from 20 to 200 h. Moreover, by using SEM the grain morphologies at different formation stages during ball milling are observed

    Qualitative and Quantitative Models Based on Handheld NIR Spectroscopy to Monitor the Tomato Fruit Development During Early and Full Season

    The present study aimed at to follow the tomato fruit development and quality by hand-held near-infrared spectroscopy. Tomato quality were followed from few days after fruit setting until harvest at commercial maturity during two seasons (spring and summer). Results showed that in both seasons, fruit can be classified from fruit setting to harvest at maturity by using qualitative models (factorial discriminant analyses). Quantitatives models based on PLS regressions allowed the prediction of soluble solids content (R=0.9, RMSE=0.1%Brix), titrable acidity (R=0.9, RMSE=0.6meq.100g-1) and color (a*, R=0.9, RMSE=5) of fruit. The accuracy of the predictions depend on the season and also on the maturity stage. the results are promising in the context of developing a tool to assist in fruit phenotyping on site. Other experiment are now necessary to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the models with including additional varieties growing under variable climatic conditions in our greenhouses

    Cultural Conflict Related to Ankara’s Housing Problem

     This study assesses reflections of the structure of culture that is in search of integrity in the architectural and urban context and follows a number of examples from Ankara in doing so. Ankara’s nomination as the capital of the country was an effort at modernization of Anatolia. Apparently slum areas in Ankara commenced during the modernization process. Contrary to hybridization effects of postmodern globalization, the gap among socio-cultural levels in Turkey is enlarged and has caused deterioration affecting architectural unity. The solution of this problems continue to be urban transformation of slum areas within removal projects or to conceal the disreputable appearance of houses. As a result of interaction between different social groups, individual needs and desires of slum dwellers have changed. Since they are belong to neither rural nor urban culture, the aspiration of low-income groups to become part of the consumption society need to be examined through interdisciplinary studies and appropriate solutions in architecture developed accordingly

    Welcome to the inaugural issue of International Journal of Architectural Engineering Technology. IJAET is a peer reviewed academic journal for propagation of practices based information on engineering and technical issues pertaining to all aspects of building design and construction. Our aim is to publish most complete and reliable source of information on the discoveries and current developments in this area through original articles, review articles, short communications, etc. The journal provides a platform to facilitate the exchange of information between architects and engineers for technical advancement globally. The four papers in our inaugural issue are on timely topics, and contain archival information and knowledge that would be useful to all readers.   This Journal will publish editorials, original articles, letters related to every field of Architectural Engineering Technology. Avanti Publisher will also be showcased, since without their strong motivation and financial commitment, much of what has been accomplished would not have been possible. For this first issue of the Journal, it is indeed a great pleasure to be able to publish original research articles and reviews by authors from Spain, China, Turkey and Taiwan. This new Journal will undoubtedly serve as a continuous stimulus to basic and applied research in years to come. It is an honor and privilege for me to contribute to its launch and early development. I look forward to welcoming you to our community and sending our first issue containing reviews and research articles in the area of energy technology research

    Transcending Boundaries of Creativity: Active learning in the Design Studio

    This essay investigates the changing dynamics of interaction and paradigm of communication in the design studio. It analyses the process of practical implementation of interactive tools in architectural education which placed the diversity of students' cultural experiences, contextual awareness and individual interests as crucial resource for design innovation and inquiry. Building on Brian Lawson's thesis on creativity in design thinking, this research project undertook comprehensive investigation of students' satisfaction of their roles in the studio and the room for liberal thought they are given to elaborate on genuine approach to architectural matters. The cyclical development of interactive learning strategy is explored through two different settings: first, it analyses architectural students' position as passive/active in the studio, considering their relationships with tutors' ideals; second, it reports on empirical strategy of students-led workshops at British schools of architecture, during which students have taken the lead of their creative design agenda. The practical implementation of interactive learning tools proved influential in helping students to personalize their design direction and to build a sense of confidence and independence

    Changes in Chemical Composition and Olive Oil Quality of Turkish Variety 'Kilis yağlık' with Regard to Origin of Plantation

    'Kilis yağlık' is the most common variety cultivated in the South-east region of Turkey and represents around 52% of the growing area. During the last few years new cultivars have been introduced in South regions being mostly the cultivar "Gemlik" without evaluating their behaviours in this environment. Unfortunately, it is now understood that this cultivar with good plantation characteristics did not adapt well to the environmental conditions of South Turkey. This has led to an increase in the need of research on traditional autochthonous cultivars. 'Kilis yağlık' although shows alternate; has a high yield of fruits. The aim of this work is was to study changes in virgin olive oil composition of 'Kilis yağlık' variety according to origin of plantation. Olives from this variety were collected in four characteristic and representative olive growing locations in South-east of Turkey. The analytical parameters studied were fatty acid composition, total phenolics, chlorophylls and carotenoids, free acidity, peroxide value, colour indexes and some individual phenolic compounds. The contents of some of the individual phenolics (tyrosol, hydroxyl tyrosol, oleuropein, 4-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid, 3-4 hydroxy benzoic acid, taxifolin, verbascoside, vanillic acid, luteolin, apigenin and rutin) were determined with a qualitative and quantitative analysis performed by HPLC-DAD
