A child's dreams. A bride's prayers.
This image received third place in the 2015 Research student photography and image competition held to celebrate National Science Week (Aug 15-23). Blurb: As a result of the ongoing conflicts and ever more dire situation in the Northwestern state of Rakhine in Myanmar many men have fled the country to seek a better life in Malaysia since the 1980s. Now, more and more child-brides are brought to Malaysia to be married, continuing a tradition of arranged marriages and child marriages. For many of these Rohingya girls an arranged marriage to a Rohingya man in Malaysa is the only way to flee Myanmar, because their families cannot afford the expensive and dangerous boat-journey, which is the only way out of Rakhine state. In Malaysia, Rohingya are finally able to build a home, make a living and do not have to fear for their lives. However, in Malaysia too Rohingya live precariously. They have no work rights, few opportunities to send their children to school and difficulties obtaining health care.
My work focuses on the lives of four Rohingya families in Malaysia. I am interested in how Rohingya experience precariousness on a daily basis and how they narrate navigating their precarious lives
