This photograph originally appeared in the 2014 Research student photography and image competition held to celebrate National Science Week (Aug 16-24). Blurb: The submission for the competition is a visualization of the site of my research project I am currently developing as part of my PhD study in the Games and Interactivity department at Swinburne University. Titled Epiphyte this project is a mixed artwork and game where a bushwalk experience in the Dandenong Ranges National Park is augmented via pervasive and mobile technologies. The Dandenong’s have long been a site of interest for artists including renowned Australian landscape painter Arthur Streeton – and this visualization responds to the light, colour, distance and textures of the site in novel ways using digital media. The site is represented in this visualization via a combination of numerous photographs I have taken and abstracted and reassembled using their embedded GPS information. Each photograph is positioned according to this data – the visualization is intended as an aesthetic response to the environment but also as a practical and accurate map which informs the planning and development of the next step of my research. The final image is at such a scale in which viewers are encouraged to shift from a macro and micro view – reflecting the themes of movement and distance in the project. Please refer to a recently published paper titled The Augmented Bushwalk: Adaptation in Crossmedia Ecologies which describes the research project if further information is needed
