Star cluster visualisation
This photograph originally appeared in the 2012 Research student photography and image competition held to celebrate National Science Week (11-19 August). Blurb: This image is a visualization of a star cluster containing more than ten thousand stars of different colours corresponding to different temperatures on their surface. As part of my PhD, I model massive clusters of stars to study and better understand their evolution, as we can only observe them in the end stages of their evolution in both, the Milky Way and other galaxies. The size of the white box is the distance from the sun to the next closest star on the sky we can see by eye. This shows that star clusters are very dense, which leads to peculiar events such as stellar collisions, which are extremely rare in the solar neighborhood
