Lead exposure is a significant environmental and public health concern, known for its detrimental effects on various physiological systems, including the immune system. The study was undertaken to establish the ameliorating action of antioxidants on lead-induced toxicity on immunoglobulins using male Wistar rats as experimental models. One hundred and sixty-two male Wistar rats with weights between 180 and 200 g were obtained from the Experimental Animal Farm of the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The Wistar rats were housed in wooden animal cages in a well-ventilated experimental room. Handling of the animals was in accordance with relevant institutional and ethical guidelines as approved for scientific study. The control group (group 1) was orally given 0.5 ml of distilled water, while the treatment groups (groups 2 to 9) were orally given different substances as follows: 10 mg/kg body weight (BW) of lead only, 200 mg/kg BW of vitamin C only, 1000 iu/kg BW of vitamin E only, 10 mg/kg BW of lead + 200 mg/kg BW of vitamin C, 10 mg/kg BW of lead + 1000 iu/kg BW of vitamin E, 10 mg/kg BW of lead + 40 mg/BW levamisole, 10 mg/kg BW of lead + 200 mg/kg BW of vitamin C + 40 mg/BW levamisole, and 10 mg/kg BW of lead + 1000 iu/kg BW of vitamin E + 40 mg/BW levamisole, respectively, once a day. The experiment was conducted in three phases (phases 1 to 3), which lasted for 7 days (acute phase), 30 days (sub-acute phase), and 60 days (chronic phase). At the end of the experimentation for each phase, five rats were sacrificed, and blood samples were collected from each rat and examined for immunological parameters. The effects of treatment with lead and antioxidants were compared with the control group. There was a significant decrease in the concentrations of the immunoglobulins in the lead group with respect to the control in all the phases. There was also a significant increase in the concentrations of the immunoglobulins in groups 3 and 4 with respect to the control in phases 1 and 2 and a significant increase in the concentrations of the immunoglobulins in groups 5 to 9 with respect to the lead group in all three phases. The antioxidants have, therefore, demonstrated the ability to ameliorate the lead-induced toxicity on the immunoglobulins

Polytechnic is one of the Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) institutions in Nigeria. There is therefore, the need for polytechnic engineering students to acquire employability skills that will make them marketable and be gainfully employed and fit into the 21st century workforce. In the face of increasing unemployment partly due to decreasing employability skills of Nigeria polytechnic engineering students, many graduates of Nigeria polytechnic have a dwindled confidence of gain needed employment after graduation. Employability is seen as a construct interrelating to social factors and the individual skills. This study examines predictors of employability among engineering students in Nigerian Polytechnics. Data were obtained from 580 polytechnic engineering students. Simple random sampling was used to select the 5 polytechnics from the north central geopolitical zone of Nigerian, while cluster sampling was implored to solicit data from the students.  The data were analysed statistically using structural equation modelling. The results of the study revealed that Basic job performance skills, self-efficacy and subject understanding had significant effect on employability. Subject understanding having the highest significant effect on employability with the beta (β) loadings of 0.318 making it the most significant predictor of employability followed by basic job performance skills with the beta (β) loadings of 0.298. The last predictor of employability from the study was self-efficacy with the beta (β) loadings of 0.248. Based on the findings, it was suggested that authorities in charge of Nigerian education sector should put in place appropriate policy thrust to enhance delivery of quality education that will facilitate acquisition of skills necessary for employment of polytechnic engineering graduates. Curriculum development in line with the global best practice, including training of academic staffs that could ensure the acquisition of basic job performance skills, subject understanding and self-efficacy of polytechnic engineering students should be put in place.  Future research is suggested to focus on employability of students of other disciplines, including the Nigerian university system

THE ROLE OF TEXT ANALYTICAL COMPETENCE IN TRANSLATOR TRAINING AND EDUCATION

    Get PDF
There is a lot of ongoing debate as to whether translators should spend time trying to analyze a source text before translating it or just go ahead with its translation once the source text is readable. The goal of this study is to assess the role of text analytical competence in translation performance. An evaluation of the text analytical mastery of 50 advanced students in translation in Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI) was conducted in order to raise awareness of the actual source text comprehension challenges facing trainee translators. The study posits that text analytical competence contributes significantly to translation achievement and poor performances in translation largely result from poor or inadequate understanding of the text to be translated. The empirical study takes the form of a protocol test of a 300 words translation into English administered to 50 advanced students of the ASTI, University of Buea in Cameroon. The results demonstrate that professional translation is not a simple substitution of terminology and somebasic knowledge of grammar.  Professional translation involves analyzing the situation and function of the text in relation to the focus ofits translation. These specific characteristics of the translation process are what determine the type of text analytical competence requiredfor producing optimal translations.  The study proposes a text analytical course programthat is tailored to respond to these new professional profiles of the translator
