Datei-Upload durch TIBIn the course of circular economy, conservation of natural resources and in an effort to reduce the consequences of climate change, it is necessary to act in a resource-efficient manner and to use building materials that have a high value in terms of durability, ease of repair and reusability or recyclability. To allow the use of larger quantities of reclaimed asphalt, it is of fundamental importance to be able to accurately address and assess the material behaviour. Furthermore, ways and means must be shown how asphalt granulates, which are classified as critical by an assessment of the softening point ring and ball, can be precisely defined as suitable or no longer suitable via performance criteria. This is an essential task, especially considering the future development of multiple reuse of asphalt. The aim of this research project was to create a simple performance criterion for assessing the performance of hot asphalt with Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). In this context, the possibility of indirect proof of double coating should also be considered. Using two different asphalt granulates, which differ in terms of the hardness of the recovered binder, the influence of the type, quantity and mixing time on the asphalt performance of an AC 16 B asphalt binder course and an AC 22 T asphalt base course has been investigated. The asphalts used have been analysed in terms of compactability, deformation resistance, asphalt stiffness and cold temperature and fatigue behaviour. Furthermore, the reclaimed binder was tested with regard to the softening point ring and ball and the binder stiffness, determined by means of a dynamic shear rheometer. For the investigation variants of this research project, it was found that the test methods for determining compactability and resistance to permanent deformation did not provide robust test results. The results of the compactability do not differentiate sufficiently, taking into account the method’s precision. When determining the resistance to permanent deformation, it was found that the presence of different abort criteria (10,000 load cycles or 40 ‰ strain) in combination with different curve progressions (with or without inflection point) makes a general assessment based on this test method impossible. The consideration of the influence of blending time and the amount of asphalt granulate added on the results of low temperature behaviour, asphalt stiffness and fatigue do not allow a reliable conclusion. It must be stated that the test results do not show any systematic patterns. One possible performance approach of this research project was to analyse and compare the asphalt stiffnesses with those of the resulting bitumen used (mixture of fresh bitumen and bitumen in the asphalt granulate). The results of this research project confirmed the correlation between binder and asphalt stiffness. Therefore, in order to derive a performance related criterion for the performance of hot mix asphalt with asphalt granulate, the established relationship was used and the aim was to define a "critical" range for the performance properties using the results of the low-temperature behaviour. performance properties using the results of the low-temperature behaviour. For this purpose, the correlation between fracture temperature and stiffness of the asphalt at the coldest measuring point of the stiffness-temperature function was tested. A correlation could be proven. Considering the FGSV working paper for Low Temperature Behaviour of Asphalt, Part 1 [AP TTV, Part 1], a critical range for the asphalt stiffness can be defined depending on the frost exposure zone (here exemplarily for zone II). When comparing the fracture temperature in the cooling test with the binder stiffness of the reclaimed binder at -10 °C and 10 Hz (as well as at 1 Hz), a correlation could also be found and a critical range defined. Based on the described correlations, a recommendation for the further handling of asphalt granulate can be defined. Thus, asphalt producers can predict the performance effect on the asphalt mix on the basis of a trial mixture with asphalt granulate and a subsequent extraction and DSR test of the binder. Stiffness and/or cooling tests are recommended for the client to check the asphalt performance. It should be noted that the data basis of this research project is too weak for a final statement (also with regard to the double coating) and should be validated by further research. In order to avoid inhomogeneities in future projects, recommendations were also derived based on the findings from this research project to minimise scattering due to sampling at asphalt mixing plants
