مرزا غالب اور دانش حاضر
This article discusses the futuristic quality of Mirza Ghalib’s poetry and its relevance to the present times. Urdu poetry has always upheld the importance of tradition and through the centuries, most poets have seldom deviated from accepted norms in their thematic and stylistic preferences. However, there is a small number that does deviate from this practice and one of the most distinguished names among such poets is that of Mirza Ghalib. His themes resonate not only with his own times but also ours, the times that were to exist later. The universality and timelessness of his poetry is the underlying theme of this article

Nazir Ahmad, often considered to be the first Urdu novelist, used narratives for understanding the quickly changing world around him, and in his work, shaped expanding possibilities and new roles for Muslim ashrāf women. Although he is usually thought of as a cleric who had a traditional approach towards society and new forms of knowledge, in this article, through an analysis of one of his novels, it is argued that he opened new ways for Indian Muslim women

قاموس الہند: پچپن جلدوں پر محیط اردو کا نادر لغت – تعارف اور چند مغالطوں کا ازالہ
Qāmūs al-Hind is an Urdu dictionary consisting of fifty five volumes. Compiled by Rajesher Rao Asghar some seventy five years ago, the dictionary remains unpublished and its only manuscript in the world is in Karachi University's library. This paper presents and discusses different features of the dictionary and tries to remove some misconceptions about the number of volumes and the number of entries it has. It also gives, for the first time, details about the entries and pages of each of the fifty five volumes as up till now it was believed that it had only twenty six volumes. The paper further analyses the entries from a lexicographic point of view

This article titled “Poetry as an Act of History” is an Urdu translation of María Rosa Menocal’s essay, along with the translator’s notes. The author studies how the influence of the Andalusian culture and the forgotten past of three great civilizations associated with it sill echoes in literary works, especially poetry. The article begins with Andalusian references in Cervantes’ Don Quixote and moves on to trace these in poems of Mahmoud Darwish and Lorca’s translations of Andalusian poetry. The author argues that historicity is revealed more in literature than in history itself
Beginning of Oriental Learning in British India (According to the Report, 17th January 1824)
After the capture by Lord Lake (1803) of the metropolis of Mughal India, Delhi, the authoritative personages of the East India Company thought of taking certain measures to complete their expansionist designs. This also included reviewing the prevalent traditional system of education. Soon they constituted a General Committee of Public Instruction (Calcutta). J. H. Taylor, Secretary of Local Agency (Delhi) was deputed to submit a comprehensive report about the latest position of the Muslims’ educational institutions and proposals for their survival, if possible. This report (dated 17 Jan. 1824) is still not available in printed form and it comprises most significant suggestions, on which the future educational policy of India was to be based, like the introduction of European science, technology and literature through translations into Oriental languages (Urdu etc.). There is an emphasis on the dissemination of 'useful knowledge' and recommendation to establish an institute 'The Delhi Government College' generally known as the Delhi College which played a vital role in the Muslim Renaissance in North India etc. etc

This article discusses the use of the term “female consciousness” with its several connotations as applied in Urdu criticism and research. This term is generally used for a woman’s sensibility in relation to that of a man and disregards all other aspects of her thought process, thus limiting and narrowing its scope. The writer debates the use of the term in this context and puts forth the idea that understanding of the human consciousness should rise above the male and female divide

Bāgh-o-Bahār is not only an important Urdu classic, it has also been of great interest to researchers and has been cited more than once. This article reviews two of the best known edited versions of this book, one by Rashid Hasan Khan and the other by Mirza Hamid Baig. Although both researchers enjoy authentic credentials, there are several points of contradiction in the two versions, whereas both the researchers have also given strong arguments for their finndings. This article studies the differences between these versions

This article studies poems eulogizing the prominent Urdu short story writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Poems written for him or about him are deemed as thought provoking. Several of these poems were written on his death in which poets have not only expressed their sorrow on this loss but have also criticized the societal norms of the subcontinent that Manto himself highlights in his stories

The contribution of Muslims in the spread of education during their rule in South Asia is tremendous. Even during the political decline of the Mughal Empire, the educational system thrived and survived. However, as colonial rule took root along with the British educational system, the Muslim community struggled to maintain their traditional educational institutions. However, several of these institutions inducted new trends and ideas in their syllabi which also became a target of controversy and debate.
