Somerset West, Helderberg College (Cape Town District)

    No full text
The college is situated in a remarkably beautiful area north of Somerset West. It belongs to the Adventist Church and houses i.a. a school of theology. In front of the latter building stands an impressive bell tower. The steel bell that hangs in it comes from the C.S. Bell Company, situated in Hillsboro, Ohio, U.S.A. This company refers to Charles Singleton Bell. The name of the founder does not appear on the bells as is usually done with bronze bells, but on the yoke from which the bell is hung. Numbers in the middle of the yoke probably refer to an internal numbering. For example, the number 2 in Paarl indicates that the bell was probably made shortly after 1894 when the company emerged from a former partnership. There is no indication of a founding year

    Kromfontein, Witzenberg, Ceres (Winelands District)

    No full text
On the premises of the fruit estate Kromfontein, owned by the family Du Toit, hangs a very neat bell in a very attractive construction. The bell has quite large dimensions but shows no decorations that could help in retrieving its history. On the other hand, the bell is in excellent condition with no defects or signs of corrosion. This suggests that the bell has been recently made, probably simultaneously with the bell with the same dimensions and kept in the neighboring estate De Keur

    Rietfontein, Witzenberg, Ceres (Winelands District)

    No full text
Attached to one of the building of the estate Rietfontein is a stone construction in which hangs a small bell. Above the sound bow are three moulding wires and they make up the decorations on the bell. What is remarkable is the lid above the bell, where we normally would expect a shoulder and a crown. This suggests that the bell has been made by a local blacksmith
