Foliar and seed application of salicylic acid and kinetin impacts of the seed yield, oil content and fatty acid composition of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.)
Plant growth regulators (PGRs) play important roles in seedling growth, yield, growth, and other parameters in plants. These PGRs include kinetin (K) and salicylic acid (SA). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of PGRs (K and SA) and their different application methods (foliar spray and seed priming) on safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) in field conditions. The present study was conducted in both 2022 and 2023 years as four independent experiments (seed priming with K, foliar application with K, seed priming with SA, foliar application with SA). In the study, four different doses of K (0, 50, 75, and 100 mg L-1) and SA (0, 50, 75, and 100 mg L-1) were used. The experiments were conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In this study, days to emergence, plant height, branch number, head number, number of seeds per head, head diameter, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, oil content, oil yield, and fatty acid composition parameters were investigated. The study's findings indicate that the PGR applications had a significantly improved seed yield, oil content, oil yield, and the examined fatty acids. The oleic acid content, which is a very important parameter for oilseed crops, was positively affected by seed priming with kinetin. In this study, all applications were compared with each other, and it was concluded that seed priming was more effective than the foliar application method. In addition, it was observed that salicylic acid improved the analyzed characters more positively than kinetin
Exploring the relationship between PMS symptoms and sexual satisfaction and personality traits in women aged 18-35
Background: Menstruation affects women for approximately 30-35 years of their lifespan, recurring monthly and signalling fertility during the reproductive age. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) presents a complex of physical and behavioural symptoms in the second half of the menstrual cycle, significantly impairing women's quality of life. It is reported that 40% of women in their reproductive years experience PMS, with symptoms such as bloating, anxiety, tension, episodes of crying, depression, and fatigue. Objective: This study investigates the correlation between personality traits and both PMS symptoms and sexual satisfaction among women aged 18-35. It also examines the influence of sociodemographic factors including age, marital status, economic condition, and education level on these relationships. Methods: Utilizing a convenience sampling approach, this research focuses on a sample of 150 women residing in Istanbul. The sampling strategy is designed to facilitate the most accessible selection of participants based on time and availability. Results: The findings suggest that personality traits are significant predictors of both Premenstrual Syndrome severity and levels of sexual satisfaction. Specifically, Neuroticism was identified as the most significant predictor, showing a strong positive association with the severity of PMS symptoms. Additionally, Neuroticism was positively associated with premenstrual symptoms like depressive affect, anxiety, fatigue, and irritability. On the other hand, Extraversion and Lying showed negative associations with both PMS severity and sexual satisfaction, with Extraversion emerging as the most significant predictor of lower sexual satisfaction. These results illuminate the intricate relationships between individual psychological characteristics, menstrual health, and sexual well-being. Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of considering personality traits and sociodemographic factors in understanding the experiences of PMS and sexual satisfaction among women. By highlighting the role of individual differences, this research contributes to a broader understanding of women's health and well-being during the reproductive years

Physicochemical Characterization of Biomineralized Structures of Sea Pen Pteroeides spinosum (Ellis & Solander, 1786) (Octocorallia: Pennatulidae)
In this study, biomineralized polyp leaf spicules and the endoskeletal axis of the coral Pteroeides spinosum were physicochemically characterized by FTIR, SEM, EDX, TGA, XRD, ICP-MS, and ICP-OES analyses. The mineralized inner axis and polyp leaf spicules of P. spinosum were also pulverized and incorporated into the polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel structure. In vitro bioactivity of coral polyp leaf spicules was evaluated by using simulated body fluid. Characterization analyses identified the major crystalline phase of coral polyp leaves spicules and the inner axis as calcite. The coral's inner axis exhibits a notched and perforated surface morphology. Calcite sclerites obtained from polyp leaves exhibit a crystalline structure and smooth surface morphology. TGA results revealed the organic matter in the coral individual is higher than that of the polyp leaf spicules. It resulted the coral's inner axis was compatible with the PAAm hydrogel. Coral polyp leaf spicules did not form apatite on their surface in simulated body fluid. The calcite content of the coral P. spinosum can be evaluated as an inert additive to improve mechanical properties and thermal stability in hydrogels.Scientific Research Office of Trakya University, Turkey [TUBAP 2020/142]This study was financially supported by the Scientific Research Office of Trakya University (Project No: TUBAP 2020/142), Turkey
Critical discourse analysis in international relations: Putin's quest for legitimacy and international law
This thesis seeks to answer the question of why states need legitimacy in International Relations (IR) and examines the relationship between this answer and International Law (IL). The importance of legitimacy in international society is emphasised in the framework based on the English School theory, which offers a helpful perspective in understanding the importance of legitimacy for states in the IR arena, and the Constructivist theory, which develops interpretations in the production of legitimacy through discourses. In this context, the position and practices of the United Nations (UN) are analysed and the role of the resolutions on the prohibition and exceptions to the use of force in determining the criteria of legitimacy is explained. In order to answer the question of how states construct legitimacy through discourses, the Crtical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method is used. By revealing how legitimacy is constructed through discourse and how language is used as an ideological tool in this process, ESA provides an in-depth prespective in understanding the behaviours that states associate with legitimacy in the international system. Therefore, in order to support the main arguments of the study, the discourses preferred by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the process of legitimacy produciton in the text of his address to the nation dated 24.02.2022, in which he officially announced the military operation he had launched against Ukraine, are analysed with the CDA method and a critical framework is presented
Performance Benchmarking of Classical Statistic, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning Time Series Models in Forecasting Measles Cases
In the globalizing world, the reduction in travel time has facilitated the spread of infectious diseases, particularly those transmitted through contact and respiratory secretions. Measles, a highly contagious disease easily transmitted via respiratory droplets, continues to be a significant public health threat. Despite being largely preventable through vaccination, the measles virus remains endemic in regions with low vaccination rates, impacting public health in countries receiving migrants from these areas. Accurate computer-aided forecasting of measles outbreaks can assist policymakers in making informed decisions to prevent the spread of the disease. This study compares the performance of different time series models, including classical statistical methods, machine learning, and deep learning techniques, in forecasting the number of measles cases. For performance evaluation, a comparative analysis was conducted on datasets from Benin, Cameroon, and Nigeria. The forecasting performance of the models—ARIMA, HW, LSTM, Greykite, Prophet, and XGBoost—was assessed using RMSE, MAPE, MAE, and MSLE evaluation metrics. The models were trained on the first 147 months of data from each dataset, with their forecasting performance evaluated over the subsequent 12 months. The study results reveal that the XGBoost model achieved the lowest MSLE in predicting measles cases for Benin (0.08) and Nigeria (0.69), while the LSTM model performed best for Cameroon with an MSLE of 0.67. Using the developed computer-aided system, the next six months of measles cases were forecasted for these countries. To our best knowledge, this study is one of the first to benchmark different time series models, using diverse datasets in forecasting measles cases. The findings suggest that artificial intelligence-based prediction systems can play a crucial role in preventing the spread of infectious diseases like measles and in developing effective health policies
